"The Forgotten Supplement That Every Bodybuilder Should Know About"

What is Beta Glucan?
Beta Glucan is a natural extract known for its ability to modulate and enhance the performance of the immune system. This extract is known as a "biological response modifier" because of its ability to activate a protective response to cell damage. Immunologists have discovered that receptors on the surface of innate immune cells are responsible for binding to B-glucans, allowing the immune cells to recognize them. This makes Beta glucan a scientifically proven biological defense modifier (BDM) that nutritionally potentiates and modulates the immune system and aids in recovery and tissue repair.
As a supplement, after swallowing orally, Beta glucan has been shown to have various therapeutic healing effects generated by an increase in immunity by binding to the immune cells surface. Such an effect has been shown to reduce tumor cells, which suggests it may even have anti-cancer potential.
How it works
For many years Glucans have been investigated for its immune enhancing properties, particularly their ability to activate macrophage immune cells. The properties of yeast cell walls were first reported in 1939, but it wasn't until the 1960's that researchers identified Beta 1, 3-D glucan as the key molecule. Since then, scientists at some of the world's pre-eminent universities and research institutions have conducted more than 800 Beta Glucan studies in animals and humans. This research confirms that Beta Glucan produces multiple broad-scale effects that strengthen the vitality of the T cells and immune system. This polysaccharide is carried across the lining of the small intestine into the lymphatic system via M (microfold) cells in the Peyer's Patches. From the lymphatic system, the Beta Glucan is carried by phagocytes throughout the immune system and bone marrow. This provides complete systemic activation of your immune system. There is more recent evidence that is all helps in utilizing fat for fuel, resulting in more fat loss in subjects who exercise regularly.
Healthcare providers sometimes give beta glucans by IV (intravenously) or by injection into the muscle to treat wasting diseases and to boost the immune system in people with related conditions. Beta glucans are also given by IV to prevent infection in people after surgery.
Beta glucan has been proven to be effective when administered orally and intravenously, however, the latter would require daily visits to a physician. When taken orally, the macrophage obtains maximum activity and effectiveness after about 72 hours, then again reaches normal activity after about 144 hours.
Beta Glucan may be one of the most significant, yet least recognized beneficial supplement for bodybuilders. Since it works to repair cell damage it not only prevents catabolism but it also enhances recuperation and development of new cells, including muscle tissue.
