Defining non competitor vs. competitor

Mobster starts by talking about Rich Piana as an example of someone who rarely competed yet used his marketing tactics to make money and used big steroid cycles.  He routinely talked about and bragged about the big cycles he did and openly talked about them.  His physique being so huge and 'monster-like' required him to push the envelope.

Steve agrees the baseline of what is considered a competitor vs. noncompetitor is someone who travels around the world competing in bodybuilding contests and building a history of awards and wins vs. someone who is just competing maybe against themselves or their peers in the gym.

An example of this might be you want to outbench your body at the gym, or you want to increase the strength you have against them. You might be able to bench 30 pounds more but want to increase that to 50 pounds.

Do non competitors need to run big steroid cycles?

Steve says to answer this you need to give an example of what a big steroid cycle is.

Mobster jumps in and says that in Randy Roaches' book, he writes about one of the bodybuilders who, during the '70s, worked for a pharma company that was producing anabolic steroids and was able to get them via the back of the factory.  He got a suitcase of hundreds of pills and vials and was able to use as much as he wanted.  The claim was Pete Grymkowski was using 10,000mgs of steroids per week.   One of the guys from the forum named Monstro (Marco Luis) who unfortunately passed away recently, was a competitor and was doing over 7000mgs per week plus other things, which the guys will get into later in the podcast.

Mobster says the highest he has run was barely over a gram of gear per week and Steve says the most he ran was 900mgs a week plus orals and that was plenty for him.  So the guys agree you do not need to use big steroid cycles to reach your goals as a noncompetitor, however, it depends on what you consider a big steroid cycle.

Mobster finishes this off by making the point that different people respond differently to steroids. Some people will respond incredibly well at 300mgs a week, while others need to jack up the dosage.

Why do competitors use more

Pro bodybuilders are under pressure from their coaches to run more and more steroids so they can keep up with the competition.

Mobster says the deep prep takes place within 20 weeks of your competition and these days it mostly consists of shredding up and getting more vascular and cut. This can require you to jack up the dosing of your hardening steroids like Masteron, Winstrol, and others.

Steve says talking to pros, some of them say it's chemical warfare out there, so if you go on stage next to a person and they are using a gram more gear a week that may give them an advantage, even if your diet and training was better.  On the flipside, there is the concept of more being counterproductive which can backfire on you depending on your situation.

Pros and cons of big cycles

Big cycles come at a risk as anabolic steroids are inflammatory.  Everyone will be different and your medical history can affect what kind of risks you are taking.  Steve makes the example that if you are prone to certain organ issues, then steroids can cause issues.  The other issues are having to pin so much and revolving your life around pinning schedules and remembering to take all your pills.

The pros are that you will be able to put on globs of muscle and strength that you wouldn't be capable of before.  You also will be able to train more volume and better partition the foods you are eating. Anabolic steroids work and they help break down barriers and plateaus that you might not be able to get through.
