Calf Pumps from Running: Taurine Query.

Hi Everyone,

I'm brand new to this and have a long standing issue I am hopeful someone here can help with.

I have never taken any steroids but I do weights and cardio at the gym and have tried other common supplements in the past (e.g. createne, protein powder, vitamins / minerals etc...).

I have to restrict my cardio to the exercycle and / or elliptical. I can't run. After about 10 minutes of running I get a pump in my calves which comes on gradually and gets so bad (tight and painful) that I have no option but to stop.

I saw a post from another user in the past who complained of the exact same symptom when he was on cycle and the overwhelming suggestion from pretty much everyone was to try Taurine.

I've never been on cycle, it just always happens to me regardless. It started when I was 18 and I had to give up playing sport and running. I'm 28 now and it did go away for 6 months when I was 23 but came back (no idea why it went away).

Do you all think Taurine could be the answer for me? If so, how much should I try? I was thinking 10 g per day spread over 3 separate doses but will happily try any dosage as i'm pretty sure the stuff isn't toxic even at high doses.

If you could all let me know your thoughts that would be greatly appreciated.

While Taurine may help, you will also want to Supplement with Magnesium.
Magnesium is responsible for Proper Muscle Contraction.

One other thing that will help is "Compression Calf Sleeves".
I wear them myself, as I have some Nerve Damage in my Legs from a Previous Back Surgery.
And I get the Exact same Issue, after about 10 Minutes, my Calf's Cramp-up Severely.
But with the Compression Calf Sleeves, I can keep on going without Cramping........................ JP

You can find some Good ones in the $20 to $30 range.
Get one size larger if you plan on wearing them for long periods of time.
 
Right I would try compression sleeves or even the compressive stockings you see old people wear lol. I use them as a Pharmacist bc I am always on my feet my entire 12 hour shift. It is a night and day difference when I wear them, they help so much. Try wearing these and supplementing the magnesium. Another supplement that helps with cramping is potassium but I never suggest taking it via pill/tablet form. Potassium if not in the correct ratio within the body causes heart arrythmias. So I tell my clients to eat foods that are high in potassium vs. taking it in supplement form. Much better for you this way.
 
All right thanks guys i'll get onto getting some compression sleeves today.

I've taken 750 mg magnesium every day for the last 10 years and eat lots of banannas and avocados (plus add salt to my meals) so i'm pretty sure i'm good for minerals and electrolytes that could influence this problem.

The Taurine is one thing I think I should try with the compression socks (have never taken any taurine before and seems to be suggested by multiple people online for this exact symptom).

Is 10g / day enough? And should this dose be divided into multiple doses or would it be ok to take it all at once?

I usually Split my Taurine up throughout the Day, but take the Bulk in the AM on an Empty Stomach.
So take 4 Grams to start with if you train in the AM, then the other 2 Grams later in the day
Peak Plasma Concentrations in a Study, occurred at between 1 & 2.5 Hr.

I would start @ 6 Grams a day, and see how you do for a couple days, then adjust accordingly................. JP

You were given some really good advice from @jp4355
He is an absolute wealth of knowledge.

Taurine is a really good inexpensive supplement that is often overlooked. It is an amino acid so it's not toxic and can't cause any side effects, even when mega dosed.


Here are my 4 main tips to prevent muscle cramps/lower back pumps:

1. Make sure you are drinking enough water through out the day. 5-6L per day minimum. Remember that stimulants (coffee) and alcohol are diuretics and don't count towards your total.

2. Make sure you are taking in enough electrolytes (think sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium)

3. Supplement with 2-5g of taurine per day. Ideally you would put it in the water you drink during your workouts and sip on it through out your workout

4. Often neglected and over looked, make sure you are stretching after each workout and try to incorporate foam rolling a few times per week into your program to help remove lactic acid from tight muscles.

I have the hydration, stretching and electrolytes / minerals all covered.

I've taken 750 mg of magnesium glycinate / lysinate chelate (Dr's Best brand) in 3 divided doses every day for the last 10 years. I've also sorted all other minerals out by having a red blood cell elements test and supplementing any I was low in.

I do a full lower body stretch after every cardio session and drink plenty of spring water every day too.

I ordered some compression sleeves yesterday for my calves (as this thread was the first time i've seen them mentioned) and started taking 6 g of taurine yesterday (2 g x 3 doses).

I throw the taurine in with all the other vitamins / minerals I take.

If a long standing taurine deficiency (for whatever reason) is my problem, how long would you expect it to take for the supplementary taurine to correct the deficiency in the calf muscles and result in the resolution of that symptom (pumps while from running)?

I'm assuming its going to take time for that to happen?

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

A friend of mine has a similar issue and he has found that a thorough 30 minute stretching routine upon waking up and before bed has really helped. He also does a warm-up and cool-down when doing any running.
