need help. those of you who have experience.. did you order online? buy in person? how many karats should it be so you don't get it thrown back in your face? lol !

best tip one will ever give ya, don't fknnnnnnnnnn do it =). if you are out of your mind enough to do it, family jeweler. family friend would grab like 10 gorgeous diamonds from the hasidics down in the diamond district in manhattan.
 
Alright ,Now I can help. I'm not a steroid expert but marriage and or rings .I wont explain but yes.First you better know she's going to say yes before you buy that ring.Its not always about the size as much as the quality,the experience,the store you go to etc.Go for a minimum of 1 carat for every 50K of salary that you make.Women love to have a nice matching set for engagement and wedding ring.They love the matching set.Keep it simple and clean.The guy that goes out and buys a three or 4 carat ring is nuts.But will surely get a yes.So if you're not sure if she loves you enough to say yes than buy some security and get a bad ass 3 carat solitaire and spend 20 or 30 K.Good luck my brother...
 
Wow Steve - I'm impressed! You know if he like diamonds I get it but you could always seek out a precious stone, look at some design options and ring mountings and take it to a jeweler who can make your dream a reality. This way you can giver her something you thought of and not something you just pick out of a glass cabinet. If she likes gold I get it but if she likes white think platinum. Best wishes!

I was going to order from beverlydiamonds . com, they are backed by BBB and have amazing choices and deals. If theres not a huge 'sale', give it a week or 2 and look back. Me and my wife went out 'to get properly sized' and she found a ring 1K cheaper than what I was going to buy, so that's what she got! Just google diamond color so you know what your looking at and clarity also. If your going with a yellow gold, you can get away with a little off color because the yellow gold makes diamond look clearer, that's one way to save a buck.
 
Yeeeeeaaaaaaahhhhh!!! This is an awesome post....first of all, I don't think size (well to a degree) mean much. Real quick...my mom is a very tiny person, very simple and isn't into jewelry....when my step dad proposed he went with 1 caret....but its 3 stones. The clarity is flawless. ..but its not huge looking. Recently for our anniversary my husband replaced the big 1.25 caret in the middle of my ring with a yellow diamond. In fact i still don't have it back. I like a big ring. ...flashy showy, I like it. Plus I'm not a small girl. ..so . Steve what you have to do is really think about what type girl she is. ...this is crucial....a simple girl isn't going to want a big flashy ring, a showy girl isn't going to want a small ring. Having said that, clarity is more important then size. Then you get into color. ...pink diamonds and yellow diamonds are a big thing right now. ...very unique. All of these things depend on the girl. If she wants to marry you. ...any ring will do. My husband could have given me a piece of string...I would have said yes. The proposal....I like simple, intimate but you know her best. Do what you feel works. ...
I would not order online. .go there in person and work with the jewelry store and get exactly what u want. My hub designed mine from start to finish. And in love with it, because he designed it. ..it was what he thought I would love. ...plus it's beautiful.

I'm not a believer in marriage for a guy if you are under 35.. gotta be nuts to marry that young.. but I am getting old people, I'm not in my 20's anymore, closer to 40 than 30!! plus this chick is special.. she actually puts up with my bullshit. that is pretty rare.

so pretty much everyone is saying buy in person. good advice. I do not know any jewelers unfortunately, I used to play poker with one but haven't talked to him in a while and he seems shady enough to rip me off anyway. should I target a local jewelry store or one of those big box places?

I always go local because normally the guys have been around servings e community for a while. Just find one that you can befriend and take a close look at their work. Very excited for you!
 
Blue Nile is a great website to build (http://www.bluenile.com/build-your-own-ring?track=NavEngBYR) what you're looking for and view online prices. Don't buy from the big box stores, go to a local shop where you can negotiate better prices. If you live close to your State border, you might think about going to a neighboring State to buy the ring. Have them mail it to you and that will save you the sales tax.
 
I bought my fiancee's ring based off what I liked. She's marrying you and if she really loves you the ring itself isn't going to matter as much as the symbol it represents. Plus chances are if you go with your gut and get the ring that catches your eye, it will be the right one for her. Rule of thumb that I used was I spent a full 1 month salary.

do it in person and just do your research on the clarity of the stone and what it means everyone want to make money off you remember that bro and congrats ive been married for 15 years
nothing wrong with it shes my best friend and nothing is happily ever after life is life it will always throw shit in your face you just have to duck when its being thrown if not just wipe it off but you can still smell it got it bro
 
I would do some research and find a good jewelry store. However, even the chain jewelry stores have access to better stuff....you just need to sit down with a jeweler and have ad discussion.

Yea, or the weather doesn't cooperate. I asked my fiancee on July 4th 2013 and the plan was to ask during the grand finale but they kept postponing the show because of technical difficulties because it was sprinkling off and on and around 11pm we were about to leave and they started letting them off. During the grand finale I got down and asked in front of 100s of strangers and everyone was clapping and cheering. Lmao I've seriously never been more nervous.
 
First off congrats on finding a woman that puts up with this lifestyle. They are so rare. Definetley purchase in person. As for as clarity and size it just depends on your budget. As you know jewelry has a huge markup so if you know someone you obviously can get way more for your money.

My first question was how old are you, but you are well ahead of the game in that case. Forget about how many months salary and all that other horseshit the diamond syndicates have brainwashed everyone with and go with your gut. If you are with a woman that expects that sort of thing then that could be a bad sign of things to come.

haha this is turning out to be a great thread

she definitely is supportive of my bodybuilding lifestyle, in fact she called me out on our first date for being juiced up. and she eats healthy too so it's easy

it's also easy to settle down considering she has/makes her own money and comes from a well off family, and we both don't want kids so we will be able to be selfish together. much different than marrying someone you have to support or having to deal with rugrats.

but it's not like I'm going to pop the question tomorrow. it has potential over the next 6 months to either get that serious or time to move on. so I am preparing ahead of time considering I have no clue about this ring bullshit or karats or any of that shit. time to start doing my homework, I'm a newbstick with this stuff.

I have a checklist with chicks

1. has a good heart
2. makes her own money and pays her own bills
3. is mature
4. doesn't want kids
5. doesn't care if I watch the game and bonus if she watches it with me
6. eats healthy

I second this. For my first marriage, I bought the ring off Blue Nile and got a great deal with great quality. Educate yourself on the 4 K's of diamond buying. (Noticed I said for my FIRST marriage.) Which brings me to my second point. The rule of thumb I used back then was to only spend three to four months salary (and no more) on the ring. Especially when you are young and just starting your career. Besides, you can always upgrade the ring (or wife) later :)

its still a good 6 months away but I am researching.. definitely avoiding the 'big box' places of course. some of the good bro's on here have messaged me some personal jewelers that they had good experiences with
 
If you don’t want to get in trouble while buying a diamond, always ask for a diamond certificate. Yes, GIA is the most reliable provider of diamond grading in the diamond market. They assign the most accurate grades and provide a complete evaluation. Without a GIA certificate, you can’t be 100% sure that your diamond has those characteristics and parameters the jeweler tells you. I learned this by buying from https://www.diamondregistry.com/. These guys sell diamonds for wholesale prices, share all the secrets of a smart diamond purchase, and can even create custom-made jewelry! I liked their service and quality, they helped me a lot.
 
Lucky I got mine back and sold it to a jewler...

Girls are very picky and know exactly what they do and don't want in an engagement ring. My advice, what I did, was we went ring shopping together.... So she could basically pick the ring she likes.
Us men have zero clue.... If it wasn't for women diamonds would just be used in manufacturing and cutting idk.

Its about the cut and clarity of the diamond.
She wanted a raised princess cut diamond. It was perfect clarity, zero yellow. With diamond down the side. Originally 15k at Michael Hill jewler. I obviously went to buy it on my own and surprise her months later on our 4 head anniversary. But the jewler would only come down to around 13k. I got my sister to go into a different store of the same chain, and she got them down to around 10k...

They look for suckers like us cause we have zero clue.

I sold it for 6k....4 years later.
 
UK advice is typically spend a months salary (so between £1000 and £2500 here). After that it's up you. I'm not very keen on dick measuring with guys on how much I spent. Nor do I think the more I spend the more I love her etc - that's a no win mind fuck right there. Given the nature or relationships and statistics I'd spend what I don't mind parting with if the shit hits the fan. I can always upgrade later on if I earn more later.
 
Color, Cut, Clarity , Carat weight, and confidence - you get that from a quality diamond grading certificate.

My girl ended up having her ring made from a diamond that was in a necklace - she repurposed the diamond into a ring that she more or less designed by explaining to the jeweler what she had in mind.

It can’t out beautiful. I would have never thought about doing that - you might want to get the answer first and then let her help you pick the ring.

Obviously, she’ll love anything that you give her, but she’d be much happier picking what she really wants.

Worked out great for me!
