can any of you guys explain the anabolic window theory and how steroids affect this timing of nutrients after a workout.

complete bullshit. I've written about why many times but I will explain it like this

1. supplement companies in the 80's and 90's wanted to peddle their protein powder and bars, so they pushed this idea that you HAD TO have protein right after your weight training or else your muscles will shrink up and your dick would fall off or something

2. guys who shoot up insulin post workout need their shake right away to avoid going hypo and giving them nutrients to partition into muscles. so they slam protein right away after an injection. so guru's saw this and assumed that was 'the thing' to do so they started writing about this evolutionary new way to build muscle.

there is no such thing as a window, unless you are shooting up insulin after your workout...

when it comes to depletion of your glycogen in your body, you can eat some fruit or a cookie to restore it.. this is what endurance athletes do all the time. that has nothing to do with an anabolic window though, that is simply boosting your low blood sugar after a long amount of cardio.

the fact i'm naturally hungrier than usual to me is how I say it exists. That to me is like a "window" as I noticed if I don't take in big cals during this time, I don't look my best, therefore I say it exists.

that's because your body is depleted of glycogen. if you have ever ran a long distance and felt dizzy after, that is because your body needs sugars.. you are having low blood sugar. it isn't because your body is anabolic during that time.

when you take in your big cals as you say, your muscles fill up, instead of being flat. that is one of the biggest mistakes competitive bodybuilders do.. they go into their show flat.

I need more calories because of the training, the training caused the window of which signals me to eat more.

Or maybe we just have different terms to describe the same thing...

I don't think there is much to it. It has never been proven scientifically. As long as you hit your daily macros that's what matters. Timing can help but honestly, we can over analyze every single thing we do in life.

I think if you spend too much time analyzing timing, the whole lifestyle can become overwhelming. I think timing becomes more important if you are bulking as you may find it difficult to eat enough food in 3-4 meals per day (due to bloat).

Muscles restores over DAYS no hours. You don't have an anabolic window, it is more like an anabolism GATE that opens up for days after a muscle is worked. Your muscles will need sleep and food for the 72hrs following intense training that stimulates large numbers of muscle fibers.

That being said, it is just good idea to eat protein before and after a workout just because your body needs the fuel to move around and brain to think.

Is your body more inclined to absorb nutrients after your workout? Yes. Your amino acid levels and glycogen levels are depleted.

Do you need to slam a shake within seconds of finishing your workout? No. The enzymes to store and replenish depleted amino acid and glycogen levels are up regulated up to 72 hours after your workout.

Getting in something as soon as possible after your workout is ideal to kick start the recovery process but it isn't as black and white as supplement companies lead you to believe.

This is one hilarious answer - anabolic GATE!! Awesome, and yet straightforward answer. Just like @stevesmi, you are damn right on here.

I would rather say yes than no. Despite I know more about actual windows from I faced the same problem while training. So yes, definitely, it matters a lot.
