Hidden Huge Sodium Source...Chicken Breast...this really sucks

I think I may have uncovered a huge issue that could be causing myself and many others some High Blood Pressure issues.

The majority of Boneless, Skinless Chicken is a huge source of hidden sodium. Specifically 340mg per 4oz piece. This is due to the "enhancement" the meat undergoes where they inject it with water, sodium and some other things to keep it looking plump in the packaging...it will say something like "with natural chicken broth added" or something like that, but you can know for sure by turning it over and checking the sodium content on the packaging...

I know I have been eating tons of chicken, so I am likely getting well over my daily sodium content just from chicken...such bullshit these companies are allowed to get away with...

Check your chicken for added sodium, unless it says "Not Enhanced", it likely has been injected with this solution...

I know its more expensive but free range chicken might be better. What about fish? I love fish as a protein source and they are fairly clean.

Also found that you can soak it in water and then boil it in water with a peeled, chopped potato that will suck in most of the sodium and then you can throw the potato out...

Boiled chicken doesn't sound that good, lol...

Depends boiled chicken is how i make dumplings. Fish, fish fish, I think its a clean source and low sodium. The potato idea is cool, you sound like you are figuring it out man keep going and keep posting. I love these nutrition threads.

Got to be careful with fish also tho since that nuclear meltdown in Japan, even fish caught on the West Coast of the US have been found to have multiple times the normal amounts of radiation in them, which means most other wild caught fish is going to have more than that if its closer...

Plus mercury is a real concern with bigger fish, especially tuna

foods are such crap now days. And if you get stuff thats all farm raised you pay

Great post. I miss when USA was admirable.

Ya uh FUCK is the word I would use. I eat like a bag of chicken per day. So I'm eating like 1500+ of sodium a day just from the chicken. No wonder I can't get sub 10% bf.

KRAZIEONE

This is my chickens label. I eat one of these bags a day. That's 2400mg of sodium per day just from this. Are they kidding. That is so bad!

I am not sure where you shop at but I wait for my chicken to go on sale at $1.79 to 1.99 a lb. NEVER BUY FROZEN FOODS. They are generally loaded with salt. One of the main reasons being it's a preservative. With that, like Big Turk mentioned always check the nutritional label of ALL FOODS for sodium.

What a difference. Even at 8 -12 servings a day you are still well within low limits. To stay on the SAFE side it is recommended to stay below 1500mg a day. Some sources even go as high as 2400mg a day. The real precursor is if you are suseptible to high blood pressure. If not, its not really something to be concerned about.

Guys this is a awesome thread. Trying eat and shop healthy just keeps getting harder and more expensive every day.

Great thread here

I always check my food labels for sodium fat and carbs. But I never thought to look at the chicken label Lol.

KRAZIEONE
Me either until I just started checking all my foods sodium content to try and figure out how much I was taking in...a shitload more than I thought...

This is a quite normal in Sweden, the chicken tastes salty almost like it was smoked, lol. You can tell there is a big difference between the chicken in Norway and Sweden. Ours taste fresh and nice, the others tastes... well crap. Many don't give two fucks about that since it is so much cheaper in Sweden. But I rather get some quality and pay a bit more

Could it be because maybe they use a difference brine to preserve the meat over there?

Hey guys I know that you have been talking a lot about the high sodium content in the chicken which I agree a lot of which is totally unnecessary. BigTurk supplied some interesting solutions to boiling out the sodium and using a potato as a sponge to soak up the unwanted sodium. Great idea! This is just my thoughts since I come from a cycling background and know that when it's hot outside and I am sweating beyond a certain limit I need to add sodium in order to stay hydrated. So, if you have access sodium in your system why not go for a good sweat. I understand that if your BP and HR are high running and doing cardio may not be an answer to sweat it out but how about stepping inside a steam room or just layering up the sweat pants and sweat shirt to sweat your ass off until the sodium clears the body? Actually once the sodium clears the body it should make room for more sodium to be absorbed. I had also read that drinking natural spring water will break up the sodium and keep you hydrated in a healthy manner.

Upping potassium helps too, as they counteract each other

Hmm, just in my morning through afternoon meals I consume 2300-2400 mg of sodium. Mayo clinic recommend around 2300 under 51 and less than 1500mg/day over 51. LMFAO there's is no fuking way that is possible for people like us who eat 3000+cals a day. I eat healthy as hell compared to 99% of Mericans...fuk u mayo!!!

Well we discovered a "new market"....low sodium whey all natural protein...*waits for JP to burst my bubble and post whey he has with low sodium*

Oh hey BigTurk I totally forgot about potassium salt. Yup, its called NuSalt you might have had some allready. It kinda taste like salkt and I use it as a salkt sub when I cook because it is an extra source of potassium.

I bought some potassium gluconate pills...BOGO for $5.99, 200 caps total

FYI.....LOL...Jesus...you guys..... do you know what they use on death row to kill people with for the leathal injection death sentance.....POTASSIUM!!!

You only need 99 mg of Potassium a Day - in Supplement form.
As far as Sodium - Sea Salt is what you should be using - not Table Salt, it's Crap.
Sea Salt has Naturally Occurring Magnesium and Iodide.
You want your Sea Salt - Unrefined and Minimally Processed and also made in Small Batches.
You will find that you don't need much because the Taste is Intense......................................... JP
P.S.
And Always read and understand your Food Labels - It's a Goddamn Conspiracy with a lot of the Major Food Companies.
P.S.S.
The Major Food Co's treat us like Mushrooms - "Keep us in the Dark, and Pile Shit on Us".

Isopure Whey Protein Isolate is 170 mg of Sodium for a 26 gram Shake.
I was looking at Muscle Feast which also sells Isolate that's not Flavored or Sweetened, but they didn't list it. I know it's low.
Their stuff is Kosher (really Rabbi-Kosher), and if you get their Sweetened Whey, it's only Sweetened with Stevia...................... JP

Yeah I'm only taking one potassium cap, but the RDA is 4700 mg, which is a whole heck of a lot more than Sodium's 1500-2300

LMFAO bro...you really need to take BASIC A&P. Potassium is the major intracellular cation. Total body potassium content is approximately 50 mEq per kilogram body weight. Therefore, a 70 kilogram person (154lbs) has about 3500 mEq total body potassium, 98% of which is in the intracellular compartment. The sodium potassium ATPase is the major cellular enzyme responsible for maintaining very low intracellularr Na concentration and increased potassium intracellular concentration.

They give a HUGE lethal injection of KCL to death row convicts. Thus my quote above about heart arrhythmias and too much K+, but dude you'd have to eat 1000 banana's to even do that lol.

My Gold only has 130mg/scoop..26grams protein

Funny.....I have been to the hospital because of my diabetes going into DKA. Anyways, after them doing some blood tests they found my electrolytes to be way out of wack the big one being potassium. Lets put it this way. I have never seen nurses run so fast. Funny too. I dont remember eating any bannans that day.

BTW....A&P were just my prereqs bro. LOL

So u have TypeII? I see DKA's all the time and it has ZERO to do with K+ lol. Your electrolytes were out of wack b/c your respiratory drive was on OD and burning up all your energy to compensate for u being in metabolic acidosis..aka DKA.
Prereqs....u in skool for Med?

No Bro. Now I should come back at you and say that you need to take a basic endocrine class educating you on the fundamental differences between type 1 and 2 diabetics.

edit type 2's rarely if ever go into DKA

Why is that, b/c I didn't guess you had type I lol. Type II the most common...so u had juvenile Type I...suxs for u.

Oh and my comment about u taking an A&P class was b/c u have a lot of questions that can be answered with those classes. Didn't realize you had already taken them.

You do know that juvenille Type 1 diabeties is a title that has been outdated for about the last 30years!......Type 1 diabetes is being commonly referred to now as an "auto immune disease" because the majority of those getting it are in there 20's abd 30's. Basic A and P bro!

edit type 2's rarely if ever go into DKA

Yea, my bad, next time I'm intubating someone in DKA I'll ask "hey do u have type one or two, b/c it's important for my to know so I can save your life" :p

Seriously bro, I've worked in enough hospitals I've seen type I and II's go DKA...those stats don't count the extremely ill people I see with cormorbidities.

LOL...ok u win the internet today...I bow to u, great king of the insulin fuked ones.

Damn it I thought I was gym eating frozen chicken never thought to look at the sodium it's no wonder I have issues with my Bp glad I read this post

wow....i eat at least 3 breasts a day.....fuk thats a lot of salt.

I thought it was from the GH that i was holding so much water.......

I buy the organic chicken that claims it all natural without all the bullshit. The cheap store brands always have twice as much shit in it somehow in just a plain piece of meat! I also hunt and lately been eating wild turkey breast I shot. Def the way 2 go!!!

That's why I shop at either whole foods, trader joes or a butcher shop for meats! 😁

Can you find chicken with very low sodium at whole foods stores or is it still high in sodium. I've noticed how high the sodium can be in frozen chicken alone
