Bodybuilding & Spirituality

Kraz I like you outlook bro and yup lots of different goals here. DD also I like your simple and matter of fact approach about lifting heavy and eating and sleeping. You can have great form but if you dont eat and dont sleep you won't grow. I need to remind myself to keep it simple and if all else fails go back to the basics.

Come on jack where did I say that about 2x bw. I said not bad on ur lift, I didnt say it was bad, u would think I did?

Just saw ur added comment, haha.

Jack great job on the 335 bro ur killing it and looking good doing it!!!!!

Nah I'm not mad man lol I know I'm not the strongest guy by a long shot so I don't place my pride there :) I just wanted to see what I could do today since I haven't checked in a while. And no I know you didn't say it was bad. And thanks for the congrats it just sounded a little harsh as you said lol

Bodybuilding and prayer saved my life. I went from hanging with the wrong crew to playing sports and having a coach take me in as his own. I also prayed for redemption, motivation and the power to do what is right.

My Dad was a Pastor. He unexpectedly died a little over 6mos ago. I'm one of those guys who goes to a restaurant, and prays before eating. My Son does the same thing.

After trying all the new and "improved" ways to train years ago, I came to the conclusion that lifting heavier weights than the last time was responsible for the best hypertrophy possible. I'd use magnets, and work my way up to adding a 5lb plate, and so on and so forth. Anytime I'd train with one of the big boys, I can point out the one thing they all had in common was hoisting very heavy iron. Sure, it's done in a certain rep range, but ALL of these guys trained very heavy. When this is done, constant nutrients are consumed/flowing through the blood stream, and proper sleep is incorporated, the muscle simply has to grow. It really is that simple.*

* I will note that increasing weights lifted each session doesn't keep going, and going. Oh no... I do this for 8-10 weeks, then "cruise" for 2-3 weeks using the same weights, and straight sets. Injuries are VERY serious, and at 41, are my biggest concern going forward.

This is true. A gradual increase is best. I like to use several sets of high rep pump sets along with one or 2 heavy sets. Show the muscle what I can do and needs to do, and then feed it with nutrient feeding and fascia stretching pump sets

Sorry to hear man, death had been on my mind a lot lately for some reason. It's something I fear a lot, when my parents go I mean. I have started to pray again some lately but I'm not sure who it's to anymore which is okay by me :) and I fully believe in the power of prayer. Maybe not the way I use to but I do for sure

Yup. Even just having one important aspect not managed properly and you can waste a lot of time and money. Even centopani has a 50min video out where he mentions even just not drinking enough water can keep you at a standstill. Hydration and sleep are my two biggest weaknesses I think. Eating a close 3rd place sometimes

Lol none at all man I know you're not a rude person really. Some shit comes out wrong sometimes lol and yes I could've done a little more at least. I also forgot that I lifted 325 for one rep just before that to make sure I wasn't kidding myself about my ability. So in about a month I'll shoot for 350 or so.

As for prayer guys I'm right with you. I pray before I put a bite into my mouth at the table and I normally don’t make a big display about it. Sometimes prayer takes discipline because I have gone through long times when I just plain forgot to pray and then when I started to I was much happier.

It's a VERY difficult thing bro, that I wouldn't want anyone to deal with. He and I had some falling out when I was 18, and we never really patched things up like we should have. If I only had the time now...

Yet another thread on this forum that has made me realize how glad I am to be a part of this place. I found spirituality, or actually, it found me when I was at the end of my rope from drugs and alcohol. 10 years later I have a life that I always wanted, but could never seem to get. Spirituality gave me a new life and six years in I started lifting again consistently and it changed my life again. I rediscovered a great form of stress relief and a new confidence and I just love this lifestyle. I don't do much socializing at the gym, so it's awesome to have a forum like this to learn from the vets and share our experiences. Thanks guys

I couldnt agree more with this training philosophy. It has led me to the biggest gains in my life in both size and strength by utilizing the heaviest weight possible within a certain rep range with progressive overload. I increase eweight in small increments every workout and/or add an extra rep or two. Of course you can only do that for so long before you stall out and your body needs a break. So I have planned deloads or time off every 8-12 weeks.

I am currently in a 12 week sesion... High volume low weight on odd weeks, low reps high weight on even weeks, every week I feel a new pump. My main lifts are dead, squat, leg press, incline press and flat press, with auxiliary lifts spread out as well.

What do you do for shoulders?

after lifting for so many years, i joke with ppl that i am not going to the gym but to church instead :)

Some good stuff in here, from the spiritual side of this to training philosophy. I know I've battled depression since being a kid, and the control and discipline I get from lifting has been a huge part of how it stay centered.

When you workout if you really pay attention to what you are doing this is mindfullness which is a form of meditation. Being present and fully aware in the moment. Frank Zane practiced meditation.
