classic body builder training. golden era

Vince Gironda had some crazy unorthodox ideas that worked great. I do his steak and eggs diet when I can.

nice read but I hope people don't actually think in the 70's you would walk into a gym and see guys that looked like Mentzer and Arnold everywhere. guys at that time were way smaller than guys are today, but because of videos people think those were the norm.

those of you who have that mentality that the 70's had bigger men are just old I guess. if you took the best NFL team today and put them up against the best team in the 70's the score would be 100-0. and if you took a typical meathead gym today up against a meathead gym from the 70's it wouldn't even be close.

the average size of Olineman entering the NFL today are 50 pounds heavier than they were in the 70's.. even QB's are 15 pounds more and WR's are 15 pounds more too

more people lift weights today than did in the 70's, gyms weren't even available unless you lived in a decent sized town/city or they were hole in the wall places. high school kids are even as big today than the pro's were in the 70's

Yeah, BB's today Goliath over the ones 30 years ago. I just respect the atmosphere back then alot more is all.

which one did you lift at back then? and where?

would of loved to take a time machine and lift at the original golds back in the day. that would of been fun

fun fact, the Greeks started gyms and they lifted naked. in the USA our first gyms were boxing gyms, then they were pretty much private and exclusive.. today we have gyms all over the place, its amazing.

I've never been a member of Gold's, just several old dusty, ratty gyms from way back. You know, the ones with 130% humidity and testosterone in the air you could cut with a knife. I still remember it sounding like football practice with all the moaning, groaning, and yelping too. lol Lunks galore.

I remember back then.
I think if I remember Correctly, there were maybe 6 to 8 Gyms in my Area, not Counting the YMCA's.
Today, it's more like 40 to 50 in my Area.............................. JP

Yeeeah no one said that.
But i prefer classic lines as opposed to the bullshit bloated gh/insulin/synthol look of today.
Mass doesnt equal aesthetics.
Back then the women loved body builders lol.
Now they think they are gross.
Not that it means anything but body building should be about proportions and not about who can pack on the most mass and look like a greasy ball of shit on stage LOL.

In my opinion, Zane Arnold Draper Scott etc.. Had better physiques much more symetrical. Small waistlines and mass with class. I think the last realistic physique was Haney's. I like dorian and his training principles, but that is when everything changed.

I was so broke that I worked out at home. Had old plastic coated concrete weights. When I touched them together over my head little particles of concrete would fall into my eyes. Ah, those were the days. I was big time when I bought my DP iron weight set from OTASCO !

I think this is a great workout if you just took a long time off or you are new to training especially to help condition your body again. high volume training definitely has its place, I think the main issue with it is most of us are very busy and may not be able to hit the gym 5 or 6 times a week

the article had pics of the best bodybuilders of that era so a newb would read that and assume they can look like that too or that everyone in that time looked like that. in reality the average joe in those times was 155 pounds dripping wet. even if you watch the documentary Pumping Iron and you look in the background at the guys in the gym they are all tiny, Arnold looks huge at 215 compared to them.

I just didn't want people thinking that everyone in the 70's looked like that.. however people in that era were in far better physical shape overall than we are today... today the normal 40 year old male has a beer/steak gut and females are 200+. we were a much healthier society back then and it wasn't cool to get heart attacks at 40

really enjoyed this read. love the golden era aesthetics. im going to implement this program soon to see how it goes with a cut
