The problem with plant sources of omega 3 fatty acids like flaxseed is that they contain the essential fatty acid ALA and not the essential fatty acids EPA and DHA. The body can convert ALA to EPHA and DHA but the conversion rate is very poor.
Fish oil is much superior to flaxseed oil because it contains the essential fatty acids EPA and DHA. I would stop taking the flaxseed oil all together and use fish oil instead. 6-10g of fish oil per day will give you more benefit then 3 tablespoons of flax seed oil, with much less calories.
10g of fish oil = 90 calories
3 tablespoons of flax seed oil = 405 calories
If you want to add flax to your diet, add in flax seeds. You get the benefit of the protein and fibre content of the seeds that way as well. Flaxseed oil also goes rancid very easily. Flax seeds are a much better option. I like to add flax or chia seeds into my oatmeal each morning.
