Hey everyone!
I am very much new here. I have been lurking for a few months and only recently joined. First and foremost I'd like to thank you all for being so kind and informative. I figured I share something I have experience with to contribute as well.
I am prescribed Provigil otherwise known as Modafinil for my ADHD. and yes I actually do have it and not taking it affects my life very negatively. I made a conscious choice of moving away from things like adderal and ritalin a few years back due to their addictive potential. The other option was Modafinil. Let me just begin by saying that at roughly 1.50$ a pill it is a very expensive alternative often not covered by insurance companies.
Here is some general info regarding the drug from Wikipedia
In 1998, modafinil was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of narcolepsy and in 2003 for shift work sleep disorder and obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea even though caffeine and amphetamine were shown to be more wakefulness promoting on the Stanford Sleepiness Test Score than modafinil. EEG studies indicate caffeine, amphetamine, and modafinil to all be theta wave reducing but only modafinil to be Alpha wave promoting during wakefulness as well as theta wave increasing during sleep.
Other potentially effective, but unapproved uses include the treatment of depression, bipolar depression, opiate and cocaine dependence,Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia, and disease-related fatigue, as well as fatigue that is the side effect of another medication.
Modafinil has received some publicity in the past when several athletes (such as sprinter Kelli White in 2004, cyclist David Clinger and basketball player Diana Tauras in 2010) were discovered allegedly using it as a performance-enhancing doping agent. (Taurasi and another player, Monique Coker, tested at the same lab, were later cleared.[69]) It is not clear how widespread this practice is. The BALCO scandal brought to light an as-yet unsubstantiated (but widely published) account of Major League Baseball's all-time leading home-run hitter Barry Bonds' supplemental chemical regimen that included modafinil in addition to anabolic steroids and human growth hormone. Modafinil has been shown to prolong exercise time to exhaustion while performing at 85% of VO2max and also reduces the perception of effort required to maintain this threshold. Modafinil was added to the World Anti-Doping Agency "Prohibited List" in 2004 as a prohibited stimulant (see Modafinil Legal Status).
Now the part I made bold is where my experience with modafinil as PED comes into play.
On it I wouldn't say I necessarily have more strength or can turn the pedals faster but I can certainly maintain my peak performance for a lot longer. You definitely feel as though you are in the "zone" for unusually extended periods of time. I am an endurance athlete first and foremost so in every single one of my workouts my heart rate is very closely monitored. Modafinil has this strange ability to stabilize my heart rate at nearly 90% of my absolute threshold without overly heavy breathing, burns or pains!
The downside however lies in two very specific things I personally was affected by using modafinil.
First is the possibility of injury. Operating at maximal effort provided me with the chance to have ferocious training sessions, however within matter of months I developed very sever joint and ligament problems. You also have this false perception that you can train more often than you actually are capable of, which can shorten your recovery time. I don't know about you guys but to me recovery is even more vital than training
The second disadvantage of modafinil, and this is purely anecdotal, is your response to hunger. You certainly can go much longer at a very long pace however when you hit the nutritional deficiency wall, it is nothing like you have experienced before. I would get cold sweat and shivers and my body would feel like It was shutting down in the middle of a run! I would be extremely aggressive behaviorally and my vision was affected. once the food is in your body though it goes away in matter of minutes. I found this to be very alarming. Although better nutritional planning did help me prevent this
For a very long time I avoided taking my medication before my training session to ensure that upon taking it on a race day I would have a clear advantage. Last summer though, I incorporated modafinil into my training for the last two months before my last 3 races that I'd like to finish my season with. The results were stunning! I climbed 43 positions in the first. Finished 12th in the second and wrapped it up with a 3rd place in the last race of last season. All of course at a cost of a torn meniscus and clicking left shoulder.
I am not sure if this post helps anyone at all but I figured I provide my experience with it in case someone is curious about using modafinil as a PED.
It certainly works, It is extremely powerful, perhaps the most performance enhancing stimulant I have ever used but you need to have a very strong understanding of your body's limitations and nutritional requirements using it.
