sup evo, i would like to hear some opinions on whether the term muscle memory is true or a myth, i may have an upcoming operation and ill be out of the game for a while... friends have been saying "dont worry bro, muscle memory will kick in and ull be back to normal so fast..." but ive never actually seen any studys to prove this actually exists so what are your own opinions/experiences on the topic? is it possible to return to a former state faster than the first time due to "muscle memory"?

Bro I can tell you it is true. I had surgery on my shoulder (torn labrum) it put me out for 6 months. It was devastating to see all my gains go down the drain. The day I got cleared I went back to the gym. For about 3 months of consistently hitting the gym hard and my diet being right on point, I could tell that what I lost quickly came back.

awesome man, thats reassuring as hell to read!

Yeah man, I thought it would take me a while to get back to the way I was, but much to my dismay it quickly came back. Just focus on diet and intensity and you will see for yourself.

I've been out for different injuries. I've never needed more than three months to get back where I was before.

Very true. I've had to take time away several times over the years for injuries or personal reasons. Every thing always comes back easier.

No muscle memory is proven fact. When your muscles seem to shrink, they still retain the cell nuclei of the muscle cells that you had previously grown which is how you can get back up to a previous weight within a small amount of time.

The VENOMpharma courses through my veins daily... Need a reference?

Based on personal experience, muscle memory definitely seems real. Also, make sure to eat enough while you recover so you don't lose muscle from a lack of calories or protein.

listen to this story then tell me if its real or not

I used to train with an ironman when I was an endurance man. the dude ran a sub 16 minute 5K.. routinely won the local road races.. one day he was playing flag football and got rolled up on and shattered his knee.. he was on crutches for 6 months. he came back and was running 25 minute 5K's right off the bat.. then 3 months later was back under 20 minutes.. then another 3 months later was running sub 16 minute 5K's again. now if muscle memory wasn't real then how did he go from not running for 6 months straight to running sub 16 minute 5K's?

its the same example of a powerlifter who gets injured and takes months off, then comes back and sets a PR a few months later.

that's why its crucial to put in the hours in the gym when you are young, then when you get older that muscle memory will be stronger and stronger.

I can say for me most definitely in my early 30's I had been living a bodybuilding lifestyle for a little over 10 yrs I was 226 @ 8% bf on my 6 ft frame then a wife and two kids ment no gym I'm 49 now and have been back at it for 2 years I'm 212 @ 12% and making some of the best gains in the last year growing faster than the the 20 something n my gym I was a hard gainer so the progress today can only be do to the level of mass that I once possessed when I was younger ie muscle memory

Absolutely true - it never takes as long to get back to where you were. One thing i have noticed is after being off for a while my brain will think I can do what I used to, when my body hasn't quite yet caught up... which is unfortunately a really easy way to get injured. So it's important to hold yourself back a little and not push to 110% for the first few weeks of getting back in the game.

My situation exactly, D. Except for the couple years difference in the age and around 20 lbs in weight. I believe in a certain amount of MM.

True also. I broke my ankle, fibula, and fractured my tibia. I felt as if I was shriveling up.. I'm nine months post op. now and am in better shape now than ever.
I still can't cut on it like I want to yet, but weight training got me back to the ball field quick.

I'm just coming back after an 8 month layoff. I've already made ridiculous progress in a month & I'm not even gearing yet. You'll get it back bro.

After 32 years of lifting exercise and study . It's a fact not opinion that muscle memory exists. In fact bro science I can't even stand reading or using the stupid word, it was invented by igniorant people on the internet . There actually are old studies and citations that it does but way before this dreaded internet gave rise to pseudo knowledge .

What lacks today is patience as everyone seems to want things too fast , the fast food mentality . Studies can always be flawed . For many reasons . Most bodybuilding knowledge is exoerience and more and more science continues to verify this . Do not go by studies when it comes to majority of bodybuilding . Even in college when I did my cscs it's geared more to fitness and weightlifting . Most effective and proven by bodybuilders are not studied or until recent past 10 years has not even been an interest. Only since 2005 have science journals even begun to study bidybuildung specifically using EKG and MRI ect. Even in sports and msrtisl arts muscle memory is the foundation of all practice .
