Shoulder width

There is this quote that goes around whenever you read discussions on shoulder width.

A little bit goes a long way in shoulder width . . . 20-inch-wide shoulders look significantly broader than average shoulders; 21-inch shoulders will get plenty of attention; 22-inch shoulders will draw stares from almost everyone; 23-inch shoulders are super heroic and will get you a ticket on the front row of Mr. Olympia contests; and 24-inch shoulders are as rare as a 500-pound overhead press.

I am a little taller than 5'11, not full 6'0. I weigh 195lbs @ 12% BF. My shoulder width is a little over 24 inches currently and hip width 11.8 inches - so pretty good proportions. Anyway, I'm not here to advertise myself. It is about the above quote. How wide are the shoulders of Mr Olympia guys really? I have not stood next to any crazy big bodybuilders, but it seems a bit hard for me to believe that if I stood next to a Mr Olympia he would not look wider than me, especially when I'm only 195lbs. Shoulder width of course comes from skeletal genetics, but I would imagine Mr Olympia guys still have delts that are an inch thicker.

You have some damn wide shoulders. Phil Heath is actually not that wide. Just has huge round delts. As you said your bone width is genetic.

How exactly are you Measuring your Shoulders ?
From outside of 1 shoulder to the outside of the other ?

Also, how are you measuring your Hip Width..................................... JP

Mmmm. Idk man a lot
Of physique dudes got them wide bony ass shoulders. Don't mean much as far as quality sometimes. I feel like the width thing can be sku'd. Kinda like arm size. Lean 20's could look bigger or better than others with fat bloated 22's

To measure shoulder width you stand against a wall, hands on the side, palms against thights. However, delts should be relaxed, not flexed. And then someone else will have to measure, it's impossible to get it right on your own. The best way is to put a measuring tape behind you on the wall. And then you measure from side to side the largest distance between delts.

By hip width I mean measuring this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hip_bone . I measured it with a caliper.

I wouldn't worry so much about numbers, put up pics if you want some opinions on that

Most Olympia competitors have really round and wide shoulders. Both are important for the illusion of the v taper. Remember that the side deltoid is an injection side so a lot of these competitors have such round delts from the build up of all the scar tissue.

I can tell you first hand that pictures don't do these guys justice. When you stand next to a top 10 Olympia competitor in person you feel like an ant. I think it's something everyone should experience. It really hits home the difference between a gym quality physique and a pro quality physique

I agree. I met Victor Richards and Kevin Levrone at the Emerald Cup back in the early 90s. Kevin looked incredible. However Victor said he was 320 at the time. To this day I've never seen anyone pack on so much mass. His hamstrings literally hung off the back of his leg.

Man, these are some really wide shoulders you got there! Not many bodybuilders have such wide shoulders.

Yeah, I would post a picture, but I am afraid some people I know read this forum and will recognize me.

This guy apparently had 24 inch shoulders.

Yeah, that article was talking about naturals, or at least people who take only moderate amounts of steroids. Those who fill themselves to the gills with anabolic hormones and hGH do not count, not even a little. On an natural 20.5 inch shoulders look (and ARE) very broad, 23 inch are outstanding and very, very rare for those who have not been assisted with exogenous hormones.
