Consider this. I aimed my comment at the normal Joe or Jane. Do those with average normal genetics do well on what even those with world class genetics don't do.
It's hard to argue with it for or against. I literally said you can go see what top pros do. Start with (as I've mentioned) 6 exercises for delts alone in one session. Then show me a pro doing that.
Pros and cons to both high volume vs lie volume vs weight. I think a combo works. I don’t see myself as special but I think you need learn over time what your body responds to best. I personally agree with @Mobster more than disagree! Majority of People overtrain!! Small muscles don’t need 6 exercises certainly!! Just do it twice a week instead. 3-4 exercises 3 working sets each depending on size of body part. We’ve done both. But always seems like we trained for nice looking muscles but strong at same time. Didn’t compete powerlifting till was in my 40s. I only started learning about powerlifting style at like 31 years old only cuz I like to lift heavy & I was approached by powerlifters. Got hooked. But having said that. I Truely believe you need to cycle your training styles cuz when you either stop growing or you stop gaining strength you got change it up! When your body peaks or stops responding change something back off weight do volume. Increase weight do less volume. Sometimes it’s less reps but volume in total! Change your diet sometimes. Body gets used to it it becomes complacent needs a shock to the system to stimulate the muscles. Also body needs to rest! You can’t grow if you don’t recover!! Too many days a week training. That’s my 2 cents! Happy lifting y’all!
The thing I always worry about with high volume is shoulders. They are super easy to injure, and a torn rotator cuff is a terrible injury to rehab. You hit shoulders when doing all your push and pull exercises so it is easy to over-train.
