I have to shake my head at the gym when I see these skinny 20 year olds run to the smoothie bar to get their protein shakes.. heaven forbid they miss their post workout shake and their 12" arms get any smaller!

a shame though they don't realize they are really just wasting their time. most guys reading this on the parrot forums are going to think I am crazy because the post workout shake has become as standard as eating turkey on thanksgiving. for the record I haven't had a post workout shake in probably 6 years UNLESS I was using insulin which ties into the myth as you will see below.

first lets put things in perspective and derive where the post workout shake theory is derived. we can all agree that pro's and serious guys who are pounding insulin after their workouts are always drinking their shakes.. as this window is important to take advantage of their insulin usage right? obviously when you take insulin your body has that window where it will shuttle in nutrients into the muscle, and you better get in your dex or you could go hypo.

so the normal joe who has no clue what insulin is started noticing the big dudes doing this so they started thinking there was somehow a magical window right after their workouts where they HAD TO get their protein shake in. and from there the supplemental companies (who make a fortune off selling cheap whey protein for $60 a tub) started advertising their powders and hiring guys to endorse them. from there it took off.

so bottom line is this guys and gals. after you workout, unless you are pounding insulin, you don't need to run to get in a shake. it won't make a lick of difference if you get protein 5 minutes after your workout or 2 hours after. as long as you are getting in enough protein throughout the entire day (which 99% of you do), in fact most get in way more protein then your body utilizes (unless you live in a 3rd world country in central Africa and are starving everyday, I assure you that you are probably easily hitting your caloric and protein goals, 1 typical American dinner at a normal restaurant is more than most people eat in a week in some countries lol), but that is a thread for another day. the fucking blooming onion with dressing at outback has 3000 calories, and that is just a fucking appetizer!!! but yeah I'm sure you all are not getting in enough calories

so all you skinnier dudes reading this who are struggling to put on muscle mass do me a favor; rather than you blowing $8 on a protein shake, invest that money in real food.. you can go to whole foods and buy a pound of actual food for $8 from their hot food bar for example. and rather than spending $60 making the supp companies rich, spend that money on real food. EAT. REAL. FOOD. that is how you will grow mass.

As you said, there are studies proving that a post workout shake is not necessary for optimal recovery but it also won't be detrimental to your recover either.

I always prefer to try and get protein from actual food sources. If I have to make a protein or meal replacement shake, I'm using egg whites, greek yogurt, peanut butter, cinnamon, steel cut oats, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, green super food powder, creatine. Solid shake!

There's a lineup at my gym after peoples workouts at the smoothie bar. Only 9$ for a strawberry protein shake! 30g of protein! Who couldn't resist? Sigh..

Steve. ..awesome read and naturally very true but I think this is a very mental thing with gym goers in general (not just the skinny guys) . They honestly do not understand the importance of food. Think back when you first started.....did u totally get it. I know I did not until a year or so in when I really started to read. People are obsessed with getting BIG. When the world thinks of BIG muscular people they think 3 things. ....gym, steriods, protein shakes. And i know I notice so many questions just on here alone with guys asking questions about those 3 things.

I really hope people read this and do some damn research.....if they realized food was their best buddy.....there would certainly be a lot more BIG guys in the gym.

haha good post steve i guess its just habit for most to do so, they see others doing it so they MUST do it. we live in a world full of sheep unfortunatley

i like chocolate, when im cutting whey chocolate it is my go to. i would agree that post workout shake is not mandatory as long as your eating enough protons thoughout the day

Last post-workout shake I had was when I was doing slin, dex and all. That was a year ago. I do like to have an intra-workout shake of predigested protein (Pepto-Pro), it's mostly out of habit though.

Food is the ultimate anabolic compound period...If you wanna get big you gotta eat big, train big, and rest big...I carry around a yeti 65 every day full of meals that I have prepared in line with my diet and a case of cold water...mother fuckerz can't eat a couple salads a day, pound 5 protein shakes, lift like a pussy and expect to look like Phil...oh shit I forgot....all you gotta do is run a gram a week and it'll happen....lmfao

I agree with a lot of this but I still drink a casien shake before bed and a whey shake in the morning just to get my daily amount of protein. I agree that overall consumption of protein throughout the day is what matters, not times of consumption

The necessity and timing of a post workout shake/meal really needs to be framed in the context of what your PRE workout nutrition is. If pre workout nutrition is present then there will be more leeway for when the next meal is. If one trains fasted, it's probably not in your best interest to remain in a negative protein balance for an extended period of time.

These demotivators are really funny lol. Thanks Steve for the interesting read - hope this will be read by as many protein believers as possible.
