the post workout shake myth

I always hit a protein shake right after workouts but only because im hungry. And my shakes are just whey protein, pure egg whites, and oats all blended up. Nothing fancy or gimmicky

Excellent read, I'll admit I have been doing this for years. Guess I was just a sheep. Regardless, it's just like u said. It's all about what's consumed not when. That being said, I'll be damned if EVER pay $9 for a smoothie shake. I'm a cheapass. Now I may pay that or more for a good beer. Lol. Thanks for the info. Good read.

since this thread was bumped the actual 'anabolic window' is actually 24 hours or more after a workout lol so you have plenty of time to eat after a workout, you don't have to run to the smoothie bar at the gym and tell the cute chick there "protein! protein!"

a great post workout meal would be fish with veggies and some rice. very simple.

pre workout meal 2 eggs with 2 slices of ezekial bread and half a sweet potato with some fruit.

this is for weight training.. if you are an endurance athlete eat 2 hours prior a starchy meal that is easy to digest. something like a sweet potato with rice and a banana.. but you don't want to run with a banana trying to digest in your stomach so make sure you give yourself time to digest it. when I used to run guys liked to do that and then take a dump right before their run to get rid of any excess weight..

Good read. I've never been one to **** to take a protein shake and consume fast carbs after working out. Like what's been previously said, only on slin have I even cared about consuming right after I do something.

just grab some carbs within 30 mins and u will feel great, good time for breads - quicker breakdown and straight into bloodstream. the protein is already in ur system. just keep ur body fueled so it doesnt resort to other energy sources.

Half the reports I read said you have a 24 hour window and the other half say it's much shorter. My theory is just spread you protein out throughout the day and your fine.

I have to shake my head at the gym when I see these skinny 20 year olds run to the smoothie bar to get their protein shakes.. heaven forbid they miss their post workout shake and their 12" arms get any smaller!

a shame though they don't realize they are really just wasting their time. most guys reading this on the parrot forums are going to think I am crazy because the post workout shake has become as standard as eating turkey on thanksgiving. for the record I haven't had a post workout shake in probably 6 years UNLESS I was using insulin which ties into the myth as you will see below.

first lets put things in perspective and derive where the post workout shake theory is derived. we can all agree that pro's and serious guys who are pounding insulin after their workouts are always drinking their shakes.. as this window is important to take advantage of their insulin usage right? obviously when you take insulin your body has that window where it will shuttle in nutrients into the muscle, and you better get in your dex or you could go hypo.

so the normal joe who has no clue what insulin is started noticing the big dudes doing this so they started thinking there was somehow a magical window right after their workouts where they HAD TO get their protein shake in. and from there the supplemental companies (who make a fortune off selling cheap whey protein for $60 a tub) started advertising their powders and hiring guys to endorse them. from there it took off.

so bottom line is this guys and gals. after you workout, unless you are pounding insulin, you don't need to run to get in a shake. it won't make a lick of difference if you get protein 5 minutes after your workout or 2 hours after. as long as you are getting in enough protein throughout the entire day (which 99% of you do), in fact most get in way more protein then your body utilizes (unless you live in a 3rd world country in central Africa and are starving everyday, I assure you that you are probably easily hitting your caloric and protein goals, 1 typical American dinner at a normal restaurant is more than most people eat in a week in some countries lol), but that is a thread for another day. the fucking blooming onion with dressing at outback has 3000 calories, and that is just a fucking appetizer!!! but yeah I'm sure you all are not getting in enough calories

so all you skinnier dudes reading this who are struggling to put on muscle mass do me a favor; rather than you blowing $8 on a protein shake, invest that money in real food.. you can go to whole foods and buy a pound of actual food for $8 from their hot food bar for example. and rather than spending $60 making the supp companies rich, spend that money on real food. EAT. REAL. FOOD. that is how you will grow mass.

People forget that it takes 8-10 hours for your body to completely digest a piece of meat, poultry or fish.

If you ate a pre-workout meal 1-2 hours before your train and train for 1-2 hours, your body is still a long ways away from going catabolic lol.

This is why I typicall smash chipotle on the way to the gym. Its not like you just workout then go immediately digest food. Your pre is just as detrimental as your post...

Having a post workout shake for me after a workout is like a right of passage. I just do it. Fuck the broscience. We all know real food is better.

If i eat a meal at 10am. Train at 11. Workout until 12:15. Do cardio. 1pm. That's 3 hours of no substance. I would rather pound a 50g shake and then eat a meal when i'm hungry for it. After i train i can't stomach food. Once the blood from my extremities goes back into my stomach, then i get an appetite.

I use my powder protien as a way too flavor food without excess sugar and fats peanut butter quest in my oatmeal and cottage cheese and too make low carb pancakes and my shake is one scoop almond milk and eggwhites splenda and ice in blender not because i think its better than regular food but because it taste like ice cream m i nus all the fat and carbs i like something sweet after i work out and do too my slightly edomorphic genes i dare not eat real icecream

Great thread! Protein rite after a workout never sits rite with me, I'd much rather a couple double bacon cheeseburgers from 5 guys lmao!
