Introduction
George Peterson was a 37-year-old professional bodybuilder who was found dead in his hotel room in Orlando, FL ahead of his 2021 Mr. Olympia show. He was found face down and his coach tried to administer CPR and call 911, but it was too late. At the time, it was assumed he had passed away from an aneurysm which could have led to internal bleeding/stroke. We had reported on Geroge Peterson's death and discussed his life and history.
Today, we finally have more information as his autopsy has come out. In this article, we will take a look at what it showed which is pretty remarkable.
What autopsy showed
The autopsy was revealed by TMZ on January 21, 2022, .
It stated that Peterson had died from sudden cardiac dysrhythmia from hypertensive cardiovascular disease and that anabolic steroid use was a contributing factor. Oddly enough, his death was deemed natural at just 37 years old, which is interesting, but may prove that abusing anabolic steroids can shorten your 'natural life'.
Which steroids were found in his system?
There were two steroid metabolites that were detected in his system and a 3rd that we can assume.
The first was Boldenone, which is also called Equipoise or "EQ" in bodybuilding circles. Boldenone is a popular anabolic steroid used by many athletes to help increase red blood cell count which will give a person greater endurance and recovery from brutal workouts. It also is great for quality muscle mass and does not cause bloat like other steroids, so it is great if you want to build a nice physique. You can learn more about Boldenone (EQ) here
The second steroid was Stanozolol, which most know as Winstrol or "Winny". Winstrol is an anabolic steroid that is derived from DHT (dihydrotestosterone). It is considered one of the top cutting steroids because it does not convert to estrogen at all, so you do not get any bloat. It also binds very well to SHBG which means it will make the rest of the steroids in your cycle work better. Bodybuilders use Winstrol to cut down hard ahead of a competition and dry out to give them incredible cuts around their muscles. The downside of Winstrol is, aside from the estrogenic worry, it has a lot of side effects across the board.

The third thing found in his bloodwork is he had an abnormally high testosterone level. This is likely from using a ton of Testosterone. In fact, when I did the math and converted the testosterone number found in his bloodwork from 150 ng/ml to 15,000 ng/dl. This would mean he was on around 2,000mg a week of Testosterone. Keep in mind the normal testosterone levels for a healthy male his age is around 600 ng/dl, his level was 25X that.
There is another theory that is possible, perhaps he was taking Nandrolone which would also cause a spike in his Testosterone levels and wouldn't cause the amount of water retention. However, I re-checked the autopsy report and there was no Nandrolone detected so that would confirm he was actually on Testosterone itself which is fascinating because you wouldn't think he would be on something that aromatizes into estrogen.
Looking at the autopsy report they tested a variety of steroids including Trenbolone, and they were not found in his system. However, this does not mean that he did not use them at some point, it just means at the time of his death he wasn't on them.
What else to know in his autopsy?
There have been many bodybuilding channels commenting on the autopsy report including Nick Trigili and Dave Palumbo. You can watch it below:
They both agree that the investigators were very quick to determine the death was caused by anabolic steroids which they found odd, and make the assumption it was due to the negativity of steroid use, and the fact they found them in his room. They also say that there is no clear reason for why Peterson died in the report but a theory is that he had an underlying heart condition.
Here are some more snippets from his autopsy:
His heart was 500g, the high end of the range of a male human heart is 350g. So his heart was larger than it should be.
Could he have gone hypoglycemic? The autopsy did not appear to test for insulin.
He was well hydrated, there were no diuretics found in his system, and overall his health parameters looked decent.
Opinion
I have seen bloodwork from thousands of people and Peterson's autopsy and bloodwork weren't that bad compared to others, so it is very weird that he passed away. It may have been a sick and twisted combination of a bunch of things that caused his death or it could have been just bad luck, but he overall was a decently healthy man. He was running a lot of steroids around his death, but his peers do the same, so why isn't every bodybuilder dropping dead?
The autopsy has left me with more questions than answers and without knowing his medical history it is hard to pinpoint what happened. I encourage everyone reading this who is using steroids to take breaks and make sure you find a good heart doctor to work with, and get the proper testing done to prevent small issues from becoming too big.
