Intro

Iain Valliere is an accomplished Canadian IFBB professional bodybuilder. In this case, bodybuilding is a family affair because Iain is married to Melissa Valliere, who is also Chris Bumstead's sister.  Chris Bumstead is also a very well-known Canadian bodybuilder and they have worked and trained together for years.

Iain was born in 1990 and his stats are 5'10'' and 260 pounds.

Early life

Iain was born in Canada and loved to play football and run track.  He was always the fastest and strongest kid on the field but his main love was fitness and bodybuilding.  His social media pages reflected a person who loved following the bodybuilding world and posting diet and training tips. He became a coach and became close friends with the younger Chris Bumstead whom he helped train.

Here is a video of a 19-year-old Iain benching 500 pounds raw. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Reusvs0MlMU&ab_channel=IainValliere

Competition history

Iain started competing in amateur bodybuilding shows at just 20 years old.  His first was at the 2010 Ottawa Championships where he got 1st place in the Junior Men's and 3rd in the Men's heavyweight class.

In 2012, he foolishly decided to take on professional arm wrestler Devon Larratt, who is 15 years older than him and dominated the sport in Canada during the early 2000s.  During the match, Iain suffered a horrific injury that sounded like an explosion.  This caused him to have to take time away from the gym grind.

Two years later he earned his pro card at the 2014 Amateur Olympia Mexico winning 1st place overall.

Over the next 2 years, he competed in Canada as a professional, and managed some modest top-10 finishes. He finally won his 1st pro competition in 2018 when he took home the trophy at the Big Man Weekend Pro.  This allowed him to qualify for the Mr. Olympia where he finished in 14th place in 2018.

Over the next few years, he would have some impressive finishes including 2nd at the 2019 Toronto Pro, 4th at the 2019 Vancouver Pro, 3rd 2019 Portugal Pro, 3rd at the 2019 Tampa Pro, 2nd at the 2020 Tampa Pro, and 1st at the 2020 New York Pro.

Next up was the 2020 Mr. Olympia where he improved to 7th place.

One of his best wins was the 2021 Tampa Pro and 2021 Texas Pro, taking home 1st in both.  He fell just short of Nick Walker at the 2021 Arnold, getting a $75K check and 2nd place.  At Mr. Olympia, he once again got 7th place.  2021 would prove to be his best year as a pro.  Here he is at the 2021 Tampa Pro posing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRpC1a0VVow&ab_channel=MuscularDevelopmentMagazine

He finished a disappointing 11th place at the 2022 Mr. Olympia, although in his defense there was a much larger field due to COVID-19 case declines.

Training

Iain trains a lot with his brother-in-law Chris between Canada and Florida. He trains heavy and is considered one of the strongest raw bodybuilders. There is some thought that had he chosen the less lucrative route of powerlifting, he could have also done extremely well.

Nevertheless, Iain knows how to train to bodybuild too, and will train 10-15 reps per set especially when doing isolation exercises, and loves to train to failure on the final set.

His training will change throughout the year and alternate between high reps/moderate weight, short and intense workouts, and training smart during the season so he doesn't burn out his body.

Here he is training his chest with his buddy Chris Bumstead. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=218fmxiQUOg&ab_channel=ChrisBumstead

His leg routines are crazy as you can imagine. Here is a video of him hitting his legs hard with Chris again. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJRb_4HtHqA&ab_channel=ChrisBumstead

In terms of cardio, he will do 30-60 minutes a day.

Nutrition

Iain changes his diet based on where he is in-season or off-season. He has been known to feast on subs during the offseason up to 4x per week (his favorite is supermarket subs custom-made).  Once he gets into show prep, he reduces his fats and carbs and raises his protein and sticks to a more proper diet.

Overall, he keeps things simplified. Sticking to the basic bodybuilder foods of eggs, fish, beef, turkey, vegetables, and rice.

Here is a video of him going grocery shopping (watch from the 24-minute mark) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6l5_1ZxGBws&ab_channel=ChrisBumstead  He says he usually goes to the grocery store 4x per week.  He ends up purchasing several items including shredded lettuce which he says he adds to every meal. As far as other vegetables he purchases, he likes green beans, asparagus, broccoli, and zucchini. (He refers to zucchini as a veggie but it is a fruit of course)

Some of the other foods he buys in the video:

Raw oats

Salmon and other fish

ground beef and ground turkey

chicken breast

0 calorie sauces

If you are more interested in hearing about what he eats during his prep you can watch this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bY-Vi3-CWZg&ab_channel=Muscle%26Strength

In the video, he makes several meals which include:

Fish and rice

sweet potatoes and chicken

Eggs and oats

beef, nuts, and eggs

Nothing fancy about this diet, it is simple and clean and does the job for him.

Social Media

Iain has over 400K followers on his Instagram https://www.instagram.com/iainvalliere/?hl=en

He has several brands that he promotes including gymreapers, revive_md, and getrawnutrition.  Most of his page shows off his impressive physique which is incredible. He also posts training videos and marketing promos.

His Youtube channel also has about 100K followers and he posts a lot of videos on supplements, nutrition, working out, and posing. https://www.youtube.com/@i27v1

Opinion

2022 was a reality check for a lot of bodybuilders due to the sheer number of competitors' post covid. The Olympia has made changes to their system, now requiring stricter qualifications to be allowed to compete. This means guys like Iain who have already earned their stripes have the opportunity to finish better.  We will have to see if he can improve upon his disappointing showing last year. If he stays healthy and tightens up his diet more I think he has an opportunity to get there.
