Intro
Justin Slates is an up-and-coming bodybuilder who has overcome more in his young life than most people will deal with in many lifetimes. He should not be alive today, but has beaten the odds of major medical problems during his childhood to become someone to keep an eye on in bodybuilding. He is an impressive young man who speaks humbly about his life and does not live with any regrets.
His current stats are 5'8'' and 265 pounds. He is currently 29 years old. In this article, we will explore his life, struggles, health problems, and why we think he could be one to watch out for the next few years.
Here he is 4 weeks out of the North Americas. He is a very large man and has excellent abs for a man his size.
Early life
Slates is from Michigan and was close to his father and mother growing up. He had a modest background, growing up in a boring midwest town near Grand Rapids. However, his early life was far from boring because of the many medical issues he had to overcome.
Cancer
At 6 years old, Slates started having health problems where he would come down with flu-like symptoms all the time. His family insurance was not very good so his parents could only afford to take him to a walk-in clinic and the doctors there did not properly diagnose him. The doctors thought he was faking it or it was just a cold that wouldn’t go away. His parents finally gave in, and took him to a good children's hospital out of pocket, and those doctors immediately diagnosed him with leukemia.
Leukemia is the most common cancer in children. It is a broad term for cancer of the blood cells.
The next day they got him started on the treatments which lasted 6 years in total until he was 12 years old.
Seizures
To make matters worse Slates then had to deal with seizures. He says he had over 100 of them before he had to have surgery. Even 1 seizure a year is horrible and a very frustrating thing to go through.
Part of the treatment is inducing a seizure. During this event, he went 4 minutes without breathing then he spent 3 hours fighting the treatment and attacking a nurse. Afterward, he did not remember the episode but apologized to everyone. The doctors had to remove 2 parts of his brain that were damaged which is called cranial surgery.
Slates had to deal with headaches, pain, back pain, bleeding, and muscle stiffness his entire life and wishes nobody goes through what he had gone this hell. The other frustrating thing is the medications he has to take to prevent seizures causes other side effects.
You can learn more about his health issues here.
Dreams to be a pro athlete
When he was going through cancer he attended a camp for children who had this condition, or who were survivors, which took place in Indianapolis. While there he met Peyton Manning (one of the best NFL QB's of all time). This led to him becoming an Indianapolis Colts fan and also inspired him to have a dream to be a professional athlete one day.
Slates loved sports throughout high school. His first love was basketball, so he would do weight training to get better at it. He wanted to be like Michael Jordan and be a pro-NBA player, but realized due to his height and that he couldn't jump very high, that it wasn't a logical goal.
Unfortunately, his college football dreams were dashed due to his health problems but the good news is in between all that he could still weight train. During this time he started to get addicted to bodybuilding magazines.
Balancing doctors appointments, surgeries, and medications, Slates has competed in regional shows the past 3 years. Here are some pictures of his competition at the 2019 NPC Western Michigan Championships where he placed.
He is much larger today, and we expect him to do well the next couple of years as he makes his way up the bodybuilding circuit.

Training
Slates learned how to push his body hard in the gym by doing a lot of heavy lifts then switching to lighter weights and drop sets. His workouts are very intense and fast, and he is always drenched with sweat by the end of his workouts even in a cool gym during the winter.
For his shoulders, he loves to do military presses. For his large arms, he likes to do Arnold's, use cables, and do a lot of single dumbbell curls with extremely heavyweight. His tricep workouts are intense, he likes going hard with behind the head tricep push extensions over his head using both arms and single arms too.
Slates had to struggle to do cardio due to his health problems, so he admits he lagged on that. So he has been catching up now that he is healthy. He took the advice of his coach and started doing more cardio consistently and the results were incredible. In fact, Slates credits his getting lean because of doing a lotof morning fasted cardio.

Opinion
It is stories like this that make you appreciate how lucky we are to be healthy. There are things in life that happen to all of us, but until you walk in a man like Justin Slates's shoes, you have no clue how ridiculous it is to sweat the small stuff.
To say he is an inspiration is just the tip of the iceberg. 99% of people in his situation would have just given up on life, but Slates has continued to overcome one obstacle over another. I hope he is successful and uses his experiences to help other children who went through what he did.
Steroid Cycle
Slates is a very large man for his height. Obviously, steroids are going to be part of his bodybuilding plan. We can speculate his cycle could have looked like this:
