Intro

louie-simmons

Louie Simmons was a famous powerlifter and founder of Westside Barbell who recently passed away at 74 years old. Muscle Insider reported his death on Twitter

Simmons is best known for achieving 920 total pounds in his squat, 600-pound bench press, and 722-pound deadlift over the age of 50 years old. He also holds records in 5 different weight classes over 4 decades and has coached for 40+ years. His height is around 5'8'' and he weighed 240 pounds.

Early life

Born in 1947, Louie said that he has always been strong, so naturally, he gravitated to powerlifting as his first love. As a young guy he got into a lot of trouble, so he used weight training as his out away from that negativity. He started to train seriously at just 14 years old. After turning 20, he competed in 1968 in his first official competition. He then was drafted into the Army.

Starting his private gym

Louie had a dream to open up his own private powerlifting gym to share his knowledge. He always wanted to visit the original Westside Barbell in California but never had the opportunity to do so, so he started his own in Grove City, Ohio which is a suburb of Columbus. The gym started in his basement, then his garage, and then into a 3600 sq ft private building with no signs. 40 years later, Westside Barbell is still going, and to get in you have to be strong and progress, or you are shown the door. Louie demanded record-breaking powerlifting and believed that his methods of training, combined with hard work and determination, can get someone there.

Training methods

At Westside you follow a 4-day split which includes two upper-body days and two lower-body days. The splits end up as follows:

Day 1: Dynamic upper: 9 sets X 3 reps 50% of 1 max rep, moving quickly

Day 2: Max effort lower: Vary the bars you use and work up to 1-2 rep max

Day 3: Max effort upper: Vary the bar or method and work up to 1-2 rep max

Day 4: Dynamic lower body: 10 setsX2 reps at 50% of 1 rep max and focus on technique and speed
On each day you complete your workout splits with accessory work.

Louie believes in the conjugate method which focuses on strength and speed at the same time vs. other training methods that separate speed and strength into training blocks. Another interesting difference is the practice of training with variations of the big 3 lifts which are squat, bench press, and deadlifting. So instead of doing regular squats, he has them do box squats, or instead of regular flat bench press, he has them do board presses, etc.

Nutrition

You won't find any strategy to nutrition at Westside, Louie says his guys eat whatever they want but do aim for 1g per pound of body weight of protein per day.

We asked 4 different Westside former/current vets what their diet was like and got 4 different answers. One guy said he eats 8000 calories a day, another said he eats 30% of his diet in fat, another said he follows a high cholesterol diet because he believed cholesterol=testosterone, and the last guy said he eats maybe 600 calories a day at the most.

So the bottom line is there is no cookie-cutter diet program here, everyone follows something different. Powerlifting is nothing like bodybuilding or physique competitions!

Death

There isn't a lot of information on his cause of death and his family is keeping things extremely private which is understandable. It has been reported that Louie had been experiencing kidney issues in recent months and he had been in and out of the hospital. The doctors had insisted he stay in the hospital but he checked himself out one final time and he passed away in the comfort of his home on March 24, 2022.

Steroid use

Louie isn't shy about giving his views on steroid use. He says it is “retarded and ridiculous” that a grandfather can walk into an anti-aging clinic and get steroids but a 'ball player' can't. He says if you are in performance you should take performance-enhancing drugs. His other views on steroids are interesting:

*He says 65% of males in America already have male pattern baldness but people want to blame steroids

*He says it's okay to send kids to elite sports schools and programs but steroids are bad? isn't that cheating too?

*He says that roid rage doesn't happen

*He says anabolics have been out since 1939 and are still on the market while prescription drugs have horrible side effects

*He says we already have testosterone in our bodies

*He says steroids improve ligaments and tendons, they don't weaken them

He says why do football players get injected with corticosteroids and pain killers but not allowed to take anabolic steroids?

*He says half of the baseball players are alcoholics, and plenty of pro athletes are on heroin and coke, but they aren't allowed steroids

He has openly admitted that he has used steroids for decades. You can watch the full interview here on his views on steroid use
