Intro

Mike_Matarazzo

Mike Matarazzo was considered an 'old school bodybuilder' and one of the hardest working guys during his peak years. Unfortunately, he passed away at an early age. Before his death he blamed his steroid and chemical abuse for his health problems. At his peak, he was 5'10'' and 250 pounds in-season and 275 pounds in the offseason. In this article, we will go over his life, successes, death, and steroid cycle. This is an update of the article we did 8 years ago

Mike Matarazzo Steroid Cycle

Early life

Mike was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts, and had a modest upbringing in a working-class neighborhood. He had big dreams for his life, but wasn't quite sure what to pursue. After high school, he became a trucker, but he knew that job did not provide a great future for him. He first pursued boxing and won the Massachusetts Golden Gloves light heavyweight championship.

Early bodybuilding

Mike Matarazzo-Bodybuilding competition

As a boxer, he learned discipline and built a ripped body with a lot of conditioning. He started to get more into weight training, discovering how much he loved it and also how well his body responded to it.

His first competition was in 1989, where he won 1st place at the Golds Gym Classic in Massachusetts.

To take the next step, Mike knew he had to move to the bodybuilding-rich state of California, specifically Venice where the greats worked out. He was taken under the wing of Flex Wheeler and Shawn Ray and welcomed to the community and they guided him as he got his pro card.

Professional bodybuilding

In 1991, he competed at the NPC USA Championship against the likes of Chris Cromier, Ronnie Coleman, and his mentor Flex Wheeler. He beat all of them, and at 26, was officially a professional bodybuilder. This is the video of the competition

Mike was a regular for the next decade competing in at least 3 major shows per year. He built a reputation as a hard-working bodybuilder who had an impressive physique. He routinely finished top 10 and top 5 in many competitions against the toughest opponents, including 2nd at the 1997 Toronto Pro, 3rd at the 1998 Night of Champions, and 3rd at the 1998 Toronto Pro.

Here are his Mr. Olympia finishes:

  • 1991: 16th
  • 1993: 18th
  • 1996: 16th
  • 1997: 13th
  • 1998: 9th
  • 1999: 11th
  • This is the video of that competition.
  • 2001: 21st

Training

Mike Matarazzo Profile

Mike loved to train and would be seen at the gym 6x per week, only taking 1 day to rest his body.

He was known for having incredible biceps. After moving to California, he took the advice of other pros and learned how to properly isolate them, which consisted of preacher curls, dumbbell curls, concentration curls, one-arm dumbbell preacher curls, and reverse bar preacher curls. He would do 4 sets of each and hit the 12 rep range close to failure.

He was also known to train his abs and calves daily, dedicating at least 8 sets each to them.

Otherwise, his workouts were usually a 4-5 day split routine that he alternated.

Diet

Diet

Mike followed primarily a meat-based diet which he regretted later in life. He says most days he did not eat fruits or vegetables, he just ate lots of meat. In all, on some days he ate 7 pounds of red meat!

This is what his red meat intake looked like:

  • Meal 1: 1 pound bison burger pattie
  • Meal 2: 1 pound broiled steak
  • Meal 3: 2 pounds of burgers on the grill
  • Meal 4: 1.5 pounds of sliced sirloin
  • Meal 5: 1.5 pounds of Roast beef

Health issues and Death

Mike Matarazzo Bodybuilding

Mike was forced to retire in 2001 at only 36 years old. He had extremely poor cholesterol levels and his blood pressure was through the roof.

A few years later he had open-heart surgery in 2004 due to clogged arteries. He suffered a massive heart attack for the 2nd time in 3 years in 2007. By this time his heart was functioning at only 20%, and he struggled for years with the condition. In 2014, he ended up in the ICU with heart problems. Two days later he passed away while waiting for a heart transplant at only 48 years old.

Here is an actual quote by Mike talking about his heart problems before his death:

"Oh, god, where do I begin? I'd have to say that everything that led to my heart problem began the minute I started getting serious about competitive bodybuilding. To get bigger, I'd eat five, six, seven pounds of red meat a day, no vegetables. And I'd stay away from fruits because of their sugar.

The worst was the chemicals. I have so many memories of being alone in a hotel room the week, five days or two days before a contest, and doing unspeakable things to my body—steroids, growth hormones, diuretics—anything and everything that we as bodybuilders do to achieve a certain look.

It has affected my whole life, so to all those guys who are on an eternal quest to have 21" arms and 20" calves, and who are so vain about their never-say-die attitude, I say, "Change your attitude." Worry about keeping that body of yours as healthy as possible, because it's going to have to last you not just through your next contest or to the end of your bodybuilding contract, but for a long time. And a long time for a human being is nothing. It goes by real quick, even quicker when your health is gone and you have nothing to stand live for."

Steroid Cycle

Here is another quote by Mike when discussing steroids. He openly admits they played a major role in his heart issues. “Put [the drugs] away. Only a handful of men on this entire planet make barely a decent living at bodybuilding. I happened to be one who did for 15 years, but I probably took 20 years off my life.

No amount of money in the world is worth that. I’d rather go back in time and get a nine-to-five job and live to a ripe old age, like my grandfather…I took the gamble and lost in every way.”

Needless to say, Mike ran steroids very aggressively and we can speculate a cycle leading up to a competition at his peak looked something like this:
