Intro

Regan Grimes

Regan Grimes is a Canadian professional bodybuilder. He is considered an up-and-coming bodybuilder due to his recent 1st place showing at the 2021 Egypt Pro and his finishing top 15 at Mr. Olympia Open the past two years. He is currently 28 years old and is 5'11'' and 260 pounds peak weight. In this article, we will take a look at how he got where he is now, and if he has a chance against the big-time bodybuilders in the next couple of years. We also will speculate on his steroid cycle.

Early life

Regan-Grimes-and-Milos-Sarcev

Regan got involved in weight training in his late teen years, but not because he wanted to become a pro bodybuilder, but because he wanted to get better at motocross. Motocross is a popular off-road motorcycle race which according to some is very dangerous due to the risk of injury, especially from jumps.

Regan didn't know what he was doing in the gym, so he used his phone to look up different muscle groups and what exercises worked which ones. This was the way he first started to learn how to train.

A year into his weight training he was building an impressive physique for 18 years old, and it was obvious he had very good bodybuilder genetics. He decided to try his luck at bodybuilding and entered his first show.

Early competitions

Regan-Grimes

Regan has switched between different divisions, trying to find what he is a better fit with.
As a teenager, he competed at the 2012 Ultimate Fitness UFE Bodybuilding Contest Middleweight, and got 1st place. In 2014, he got 1st place at the Mississauga Luchka O'Brien Classic Juniors Bodybuilding Heavyweight, and 2nd place in two divisions at the 2014 Ontario Provincials.

Professional career

In 2017, Regan competed in 3 competitions, earning 5th place at the 2017 Tampa Pro and Wings of Strength Chicago Pro. He also got 2nd place at the Vancouver Pro.

In 2018, he got 1st place at the New York Pro Men's Classic Physique, and 8th place at the Olympia Classic Physique.

He got 3rd place at both the 2019 Japan Pro Men's Bodybuilding and 2019 Romania Muscle Fest.
2020 was his first Mr. Olympia appearance in the open competition and he got 15th place. The next year he also got 15th place.

He fared better at the Egypt Pro where he won 1st place, going up against some of the best bodybuilders in that part of the world, and got 3rd place at the Prague Pro. Check out his Egypt Pro Vlog

We will have to see how he does in 2022. He is going to compete at the Arnold Classic in March against very stiff competitors like Brandon Curry, Cedric McMillan, and William Bonac. Click here Instagram  channel.

Training

Regan-Grimes-Training

Regan has spent much of his training career lifting each muscle group twice a week.
An example of his training style is this:

  • Day 1 Push
  • Day 2 Pull
  • Day 3 Legs
  • Day 4 REST
  • Day 5 Push
  • Day 6 Pull
  • Day 7 Legs
  • Day 8 REST
  • rinse and repeat.

This type of training style is a classic 3-day split routine, and has worked well for him, and is simple for anyone to do. He believes in warming up with 4 sets before each workout, especially him being in Canada where it is so cold, he wants to make sure he does not create unnecessary injuries. He then goes heavier and aims for a rep range over 8-12 reps. Here is an example of the Chest workout he did with Milos Sarcev's guidance.

Nutrition

Nutrition

Regan values nutrition and believes in changing up his diet based on his goals. Due to him changing his weight class he has learned to adjust and use diet to his advantage.

His favorite foods are salmon, bison, rice, potatoes, apples, chicken, blueberries, eggs, beef, and cream of rice. He likes to also eat Ezekial bread, and tries to buy organic as much as possible to make sure he is fueling his body with only the best.

Here is a video of his grocery shopping at Fortinos which is a supermarket in Ontario.

Here is one more video on him following a no-carb diet to get shredded and depleted.

Opinion

Regan Grimes Profile

Regan seems like a young man with a very good head on his shoulders. I like how he got into bodybuilding when he didn't even mean to, he has proven that you have to sometimes go after what you are good at. He can still do motocross as a hobby and doesn't have to quit it, but he can now focus on bodybuilding first and make a living at it thanks to his endorsements. I hope to see good things out of him in the next few years.

Steroid Cycle

Regan took some heat for his rapid transformation from the time he was 17 till 22.

Regan Grimes' impressive 5 year transformation (ages 17-22) from bodybuilding

You can see snarky comments directed at him saying how 'just upping his carbs here or there' got him that body or 'I am sure that Nutra grain bar after curling' got him those arms. The bottom line is people know he used steroids, but they don't realize that so do many others who did not get his physique. You need genetics, and you also need to get your diet and training spot on, so you should not take anything away from him just because he had steroids to help him.

Here is a steroid cycle he likely used ahead of his Egypt Pro 1st place win:
