Introduction

Welcome Evolutionary.org Hardcore 2.0 #135- Top Training and Nutrition 'Bro science' myths by Euro Pharma. In this episode, Steve and Mobster discuss 3 bro science training myths and 3 bro science nutrition.

More is better (feeder workout)

This one comes up on the forums occasionally and was popularized by Rich Piana.  A feeder workout is an extra workout before bed on top of your original workout where you target a specific muscle group.  So people then started to do this 5x a week before bed or trained 7x a week. Mobster says he has rarely done 2-day workouts which might happen a few weeks before a competition, then he will not train at all 3 days ahead of time to keep his muscles fresh.  Your body needs rest to grow.

Steve uses the NFL analogy of in-season teams not practicing in pads and hitting each other because they need to rest their bodies. If these guys, who are the strongest, biggest, and fastest monsters in the world, don't pound their bodies into the dirt, then why should you?

Fasted cardio doesn't work.

Steve rants on this topic. He says a study was done that has been parroted as proof that fasted cardio doesn't work. He shoots down the study, and explains how people bastardized the information to their advantage, and how the entire study was flawed in the first place. Ironically, as he explains, the study never showed that fasted cardio didn't work, but they twisted the data anyway.

Steve says this study was more of a meal timing study, than a study that proves or disproves fasted cardio.  People need to learn how to read studies better.

Instinctive training works

Mobster says instinctive training is bro science, because people who have this mentality can get away with it, thanks to their genetics or thanks to their PED use.  In reality, you are simply keeping yourself from improving when you go into workouts lackadaisical and with no plan.

Steve says he sees this a lot with newer lifters who show up at the gym and are just lost with no plan.  The guys who have been in the gym a long time have a system and plan in place.   Usually, you will see people set up split routines ranging from 2-day splits up to 5-day splits where they structure different muscle groups.

Olive oil is healthy.

This is a major bro science and Steve knows that he doesn't stand a chance because people have been so brainwashed.  Olives are a small type of drupe fruit that grows in parts of Asia or the Mediterranean on bush-like trees.  Are olives healthy?  Absolutely!  And that is where the scam starts because when you take an olive and make it into oil you make it unhealthy.

Steve says that olive oil will clog up your arteries just like any other oil.   Although it is less bad for you than vegetable, canola oil, etc. It is still NOT good for you.  Also when it is cooked it also oxidizes and creates harmful free radicals.  Steve also says most olive oil is fake anyway, as companies are only required to have their products contain a certain % of actual olive oil. So stop drenching your food with it!

If you stop training 2 weeks you lose all your strength

Mobster says that muscle doesn't turn to fat when you stop working out, that is a myth.  He uses Arnold as an example of someone who is very old but still has his muscles.

He rants about how important it is to build a strong base when you are young because that muscle tissue you will gain will be carried on in the future.  Muscle memory is a real thing and taking some time away due to issues that come up is okay, you will come back stronger.

Orange juice is good for you/boosts your immune system.

Just like the olive oil example, this is another scam that has managed to stick.  An orange itself has a lot of health benefits including vitamins, minerals, and cancer-killing compounds.  When you juice it, you are degrading and processing it.  You can take 10 oranges and juice them and make a cup of juice and drink it with no problem, but try eating those 10 oranges and you will have a hard time. That should tell you all you need to know.

When you extract the fiber and the skin and just leave the juice, you are taking away the fiber and also changing the glycemic load of that orange, which causes the sugar content to rise.

Most orange juice also has added preservatives, color, and sugar.  Essentially you are just drinking something that tastes like an orange but is just a sugar drink.

If you must drink orange juice, juice it on your own and drink it in moderation only.  He also says that juicing and blending fruits/veggies is a scam as well.  You are degrading the nutrition out of them when you do that.  Eat your fruits and veggies whole and organic.
