Steve starts this segment by going over the most common muscles people are ignoring.

Lower body vs. upper body: He says the cliche of a tree having strong branches and leaves, because it has a strong trunk and roots, is true to the body. So many people think it's okay to have a strong and muscular upper body but ignore their lower body, and he says over time, this will lead to major imbalances, which will backfire on you.

Tibialis anterior: This muscle is the front lower leg muscle, which you can feel when you lift your toes in the air. He says people work their calves but fail to work the front lower leg, which leads to imbalances. You need to work both sides as equally as possible.

Hamstrings: This is a big one people fail to do. Hamstring curls and lunges are rarely performed, and Steve jokes that the hamstring curl machines gather dust at most meathead gyms for a reason. When you develop strong quads but ignore the hamstrings, you will end up developing imbalances, which can lead to problems with your hips, knees, and other issues.

Chest vs. Back: Steve says he sees more and more people at meathead gyms walking around with a belt, their chests all popped out like a peacock showing off. They can bench 300 or 400 pounds but can't even row 80 pounds. That is a major issue because it causes your shoulders to roll forward, putting more pressure on your spine and neck, which can lead to injuries and hurt your posture.

Mobster says the rule is a 60% ratio between one side and another when lifting. Don't just focus strength on one side and ignore the other; there must be a balance.

The reasons people ignore some muscles

Mobster says that whether you are a pro athlete in certain sports, or whether you are a pro bodybuilder, you must achieve proper balance.  In a bodybuilding competition, it becomes an art where things have to be balanced and Arnold used to talk about that all the time.  In today's bodybuilding, a lot of times the wins are done with a great amount of help by the back looking great.  In other situations, judges might suggest you improve a certain muscle gap to balance things out, which would mean you need to work a certain muscle more to bring it up and fill it in.

Mobster says that certain people will hide muscles they don't want people to see. This includes wearing pants to hide their legs or hiding their stomach.  A lot of people will wear black to make them look leaner or wear white to look bigger.

Steve says there are several things you can do to prevent imbalances.  One big one is to dump the wraps, straps, belts, and gloves!   Steve brings up the example of why these accessories are a bad idea. He talks about what happens when you depend on each one and why you should be lifting 90-95%+ raw without the accessories.

 

How steroids help you balance muscles and which ones to use
