Introduction
Welcome Evolutionary.org UG Supplements #19- Utilizing pre and post-workout protein - with N2BM. In this episode, Steve and Mobster review protein powder, types of protein powders, using it pre and post-workout, alternatives to powders, and N2bm the company.
What is protein powder?
Mobster says you can freeze dry and dehydrate any food, then make it into a powdered form and make beef protein. Certain products need to have particles come together to make these products and there are high and low-grade products. Mobster says he has used powdered skim milk and sugar from Weider back in the 80's, which he didn't even know what it was. Most protein powders are made from liquid dairy and components that are left when you separate the curd/liquid from companies producing cheese and discarded. They used to let them go into rivers and it was killing fish and ruining the environment because they were waste chemicals or it would end up in the soil.
Chemists and supplement companies took those byproducts to make them useful and processed them into protein powder. Mobster says there is a huge difference between the quality of these products and that is going to make a big difference. Mobster says food is ALWAYS going to be best.
He says to be called an actual protein powder supplement it needs to be at least 80% protein, while isolate needs to be at least 90%. If moisture gets in there it will reduce that number down.
Mobster says he chooses unflavored and as pure as possible.
Steve says people walking into the vitamin shop or browsing online are going to look for 2 things. Price and also taste. If they see a tub for $40 vs. a tub for $100 they are going to pick the cheaper one. Then when they use it if it doesn't taste good they are going to return it. So supplement companies make sure they add sugars, artificial sweeteners, and other things to make it taste great. They also add things like fillers, emulsifiers, and other preservatives to make sure it doesn't go bad. Those types of chemicals and other garbage will do damage to your body.
Mobster also says that protein powder has tight margins and is expensive to ship. So companies must cut corners just to pull in a profit.
Finally, Steve warns when it comes to artificial sweeteners, they do 2 things that are not good at all.
- They damage your gut health
- They mess with your brain. Don't think just because your protein powder is free of sugar or has very low sugar it is good for you, that is a good trick they use.
Mobster and Steve then talk about marketing. Just because some pro bodybuilder with a big following on social media recommends a protein powder doesn't mean it's good. They are being paid to promote it! The same goes for the supplement company owner driving a Lambo and having women with him in the hot tub. He didn't get ripped and muscular on his sugary protein powder.
So when you are picking protein powder it's important to make the right choice and choose one with the proper ingredients. If you see things you cannot pronounce on the ingredient list then stay away. Mobster recommends buying pure protein powder, unsweetened, and you can sweeten it up yourself with raw honey or fruit.

Types of protein powder?
Steve first starts talking about lactose intolerance and gives you some knowledge on that. He says different cultures and backgrounds have a tougher times digesting lactose. You can work around that by taking an enzyme to help you break down lactose.
- Whey concentrate- Mobster says this is the #1 selling protein powder on the planet and he will use 1 or 2 scoops a day.
- Whey isolate- Mobster says the idea behind isolate is it has less lactose, almost 0%, and it's supposed to be easier to stomach for those of you sensitive to whey concentrate. It has more protein less carbs and less fat than concentrate.
- Casein protein- This one got popular towards the 90s when people were convinced it was beneficial before bed because it breaks down slower. The actual science does not prove it benefits you taking it this way, and there is more evidence that it hurts more than helps cause it can mess with your sleep.
- Soy Protein- Made from ground soybeans that are defatted, it digests moderately has greater amounts of arginine and glutamine, and is considered the best plant protein. Some people insist that it can affect estrogen levels in both genders.
- Egg white protein is dried whites that have been made into powder form. It is a good option for those who want to avoid dairy.
- Pea Protein- This comes from the yellow pea and is used by those who want to avoid most of the other options above. The downside is it is not a complete protein option.
- Hemp protein- This comes from hemp seeds that are nutrient-packed. It has fiber and omega 3's. A lot of people will stack it with one of the options above or use it solo if they don't care so much about protein.
Strategies for using it pre and post-workout
Mobster says he doesn't like throwing a lot of these powders at his body before a workout. If you do go that route, make sure you pick something that agrees with you so it doesn't mess with your training.
Most people will save the powders till after their workouts for some quick protein. He also says that needing protein within a window is a bunch of 'bollocks' as he calls it.
Steve says the reasoning for throwing protein powder at your body right away post-workout comes from supplement marketing, but also comes with pros who are using insulin and need a shake to take advantage of that nutrient partitioning.
Alternatives to protein powder include hcgenerate
