Kidney stones have a lot more to do with genetics then anything else. Being obese, diets high in red meat, calcium, and salt and dehydration are the main risk factors for kidney stones.
If you are worried about developing kidney stones - Limit the amount of dairy and red meat in your diet, and watch your sodium intake. Also make sure to drink 5-6L of clean water per day, minimum. Remember that things like coffee are diuretics and don't count towards your water total.
Calcium is the most abundant mineral in your body. It actually makes up 1.5% of your total body weight. It is essential for muscle contractions. It is a very important mineral. Unless you are genetically pre-disposed to kidney stones, I think calcium/magnesium with vit d is a very good supplement to take.
I would take 1g of calcium, 400mg magnesium and 400iu vitamin D twice per day with meals.
