High and low training volume definition
Mobster has been studying the science of training since he was a kid and has been obsessed with it. He has also experimented with different training strategies, and watched some of the best lifters in the gym, and how they have adjusted their training volume. He brings up Dorian Yates and how he would try different strategies to change things.
One of the things Mobster mentions is information overload and sometimes it's much better to simplify things. When you go online and watch some of the professionals train, and make a show out of it on their videos, it wouldn't benefit you to follow that strategy. Rather, those videos are meant to create clicks and inspire, but they aren't something to study and try and copy.
Steve says when you watch videos online they are going to be monetized. Suppose they can manage a million views on YouTube that is a 10K$ profit for that video. That pays their car payment for a year. So they are going to put out videos that are made to impress and get the most views and controversy possible. It isn't going to be about showing you the correct way to train. The training volume that they are doing won't translate to a normal person because it will cause problems like inflammation of the joints, tearing muscles and soft tissues, and other overtraining injuries.
Mobster says the bottom line is you need results and that is how you should train. It isn't about doing the most volume and pushing yourself to death.

Too much or too little?
Mobster says if you train the right way you should be able to get a nice hypertrophic response in less than 60 minutes and most cases even less than 45 minutes. You must set a % of your max and set a number below that. Mobster gives some examples of how to measure what your numbers will be in pounds that you should aim for. In some cases, you will need to set the number to 80% of your 1 rep max, and in other examples, you will need to go lower down to 60%.
He mentions there was an experiment in Colorado (called the Colorado experiment) where a person did 7-8 sets on extremely heavy weight (700+ pounds) doing 1-2 reps and the entire workout took 45 minutes. His heart rate was so high that he had to lie down between sets and had other people loading the bars. This type of training would be on the extremely low side of volume but it yields tremendous results. So it proves you don't have to do high volume to get stronger and build strong size.
Do you need different approaches based on body type?
Mobster gives some examples of people who train hard and train many times a week and don't get results. Yes, there is a genetic element, but with weight training, it shouldn't matter how good or bad your genetics are, you should be seeing some changes regardless.
Mobster goes over the different body types we classify people in bodybuilding:
Ectomorph- lean, skinny basketball player type
Endomorph- thick-boned, strong athletes and more body fat
Mesomorph- the born athlete who has the gifted genetics
He says that people usually have a combination of these and the volume approach you should take might change.
An example is with endomorphs you probably need a higher volume because your energy and agility might be a little less.
