Rep Range

Hey all,

Just curious question for the older guys that are 40+ out there. What rep range you normally use for working out. I'm sure we all change it around from time to time, but what's your normal go to? Do you prefer higher reps, lower reps. Do you keep any RIR, or do you go all out?

Personally I like higher reps close to the 20 rep range and I'll leave 2 or 3 reps in reserve and do about 3 sets dropping the reps as I complete each set. As I get closer to the end of my cycle I'll go more all out, take a deload week after my cycle ends and start again. I like the higher reps as I can use a little less weight and it's not as hard on some of my joints. I'm currently doing 3x8-10 with 2 or 3 RIR. I haven't done lower reps in a while so I'm hoping it doesn't kill my joints.

So what do you all do?
 
I'll be 45 next year, but I don't train for hypertrophy. My rep ranges tend to be relatively low, but as heavy as possible.
 
if you can dig up the podcast interview i did with Frank Zane. he actually said even at his prime he never trained to failure. he is a smart guy too

Yeah, I've been starting to train similarly to Mike Israetel and try to always leave reps in reserve on every set. The closest I'm getting to failure is at the end of the cycle, and even then, I'm still not bringing it to failure anymore.

I'll check out that Frank Zane podcast.
 
Im 40. I typically do the 10 to 12 rep range and focus on slow negatives and squeezing at the top so I can get a good workout in with lighter weights to save my joints. Heavy stuff hurts my knees and elbows.
 
I'm 35 and I've already started to drop weight and increase rep. Sometimes I'll drop it to 10 or 12 lbs and do sets of 50. I love the pump from high reps.

I still keep my compounds with heavy loads though.
