I weigh 180 lbs. Does that mean I need to eat 180 grams of protein a day to increase size and recovery ??

I'd say 1g/lb of protein minimum if you are a fitness person.
Recovery isn't merely protein induced. Obviously protein is essential to repair and rebuild the muscle but what matters more is the overall nutrition.

we know from actual studies and real life experiences that you need far less than what people will tell you

for someone your weight 180, you only need 120g a day max.

ironically eating more protein actually will INHIBIT recovery, not speed it up.

and what mobster said is 100% correct above. you have to break down muscle tissue and have it grow back bigger to grow size. this involves weight training, resistance training, etc. you cannot just eat a bunch of protein and gain muscle, doesn't work like that sorry.. eating a lot of food makes you fat, it doesn't grow muscle. americans eat tons of protein everyday, meat with every meal. yet half of them are 30% body fat +. so if you want to get fat then yeah eat tons of protein

"but steve ronnie coleman eats tons of protein!".. okay great, you aren't ronnie coleman. that is like me saying tom brady throws hundreds of footballs a day so i too can be like tom brady if i do that

True. And usually those people telling these "facts" are trying to sell you something.

Update:

This common believe that you need to consume super-high amounts of protein is especially bad for guys who are struggling to gain weight because protein is so much more satiating.

I think 150-180g per day is a good number for your body weight. Remember that all protein sources are not created equal. Stick with easy digesting high quality protein sources like wild caught fish, lean poultry and steak, free range eggs etc
