how do you measure bf%?

how do you measure bf. do you guess? do you use calipers, scale, immersion method? i see a lot of people guessing about people's bf and those guesses have a wide range in the answers. i am curious as to what you use as i am looking for an accurate way to track my bf during my upcoming cycle. thanks.

I have Read about so many Ways, that it can Actually Boggle the Mind.
I use Calipers, and a BF Scale, and split the Difference.
It's not Exact, but's it's Pretty Close................................. JP
P.S.
I have done the Immersion a couple of times.
If you have a College or University that has a CSCS or Bachelor's program for Exercise Science.
At Certain times of the year, you can get it done for a Fee, which will Vary.

Calipers are probably the most accurate way to test bodyfat regularly that is practical and inexpensive. I picked up a good digital pair for like 30-40$ that will allow you to do a 3 point measurement for an even more accurate measurement, and figures up all the measurements in mm and gives you a direct readout average of your bodyfat. It's pretty much what I use exclusively to test mine

My gym has a body mass bf machine you stand on with bare feet. Sends electrical pulses which measures bf bmi total weight to muscle weight hydration and internal organ age.

I would recommend people stay fat away from anything that measures bodyfat with bio electric impedance. Depending on current hydration levels they can be all over the place. My gym has one too. As an example, I can stand on one and it will read 4-5% bodyfat and I'm closer to 8% at the moment. There's been other times it's read as high as 10%. It's not worth trusting those things at all.

Plus I don't put much stock in calipers. Because what if you have a little extra fat on your belly where u use it but everywhere else is leaned vascular that wouldn't be an accurate measure of total bf.

That is why you do a 3 point up to 7 point measurement and average the measurements like I said above. There are a lot of places online where you can look up how to do a multiple site measurement to figure bodyfat and what sites to use. I do a 3 point measurement of chest, ab, and front quad which is pretty common. I don't recommend doing a caliper check at abs only.

That makes more sense for sure. Never thought of that.

calipers and 3 point spot ck with online calculator (weightrainer.net)
Yeah the 3 Pt method is what I usually use, the 7 Pt is supposed to be more Accurate.
I'm just Posting up Various Methods, that's why I put a Link for 5 Methods before..................... JP
P.S.
I just Recently had a Dexa Scan, which is the Best, but's Expensive.

The mirror is the best. :)

It's true, I mean unless there is a competition just either be happy and maintain that "look"/%BF or drop it.

Having said that I measure %BF 1-2X/wk IF i'm cutting, and so I monitor "trends" bc I doubt you'll ever get exact % with +/- 1-2%

I agree, but really the mirror is what you need to use most, especially if competing. Nobody on that judge panel will ever weigh you or measure your bodyfat, so the scale and bodyfat numbers do not matter. How you look to them from every angle and pose does.

To RickRock,
I was checking out some Digital Calipers, and I ran across one made by Harpenden for $612.99, WTF are they Kidding.
I have Digital Micrometers for Metal Work that cost less, and are more Accurate......................... JP

That's insane bro. No way would I spend that. Here is the exact pair I purchased, and it also comes with a free myotape perfect for measurements as well. This digital pair does a 3 point measurement giving you a measurement at each site, then averages and calculates them internally to give you % bodyfat.

NO, I wasn't thinking of Buying them, I just Couldn't Believe that someone would even have the Gaul to make them.
Who the Hell is going to Pay that kind of Money for them, they had some Cheaper one's by the same Company for $300.

I was looking at the Digital Caliper by Sequoia for $24.99, they Beep when the Correct Pressure is Applied.
I already have a Regular caliper and Tape measure, Time to Upgrade....................... JP

Sounds very similar to my pair, which also beeps and takes the measurement when it senses the right amount of force applied.

The water immersion system is the best.

Actually the Dexa Scan is Replacing the Immersion System as the Most Accurate.
The only Problem with Both is they can be Expensive................................ JP

I just checked Dexa. $150 to $250. Ouch!!!
I just had one done, and my Insurance covered it.
If the Doctor says you need one, then Insurance will cover it........................ JP
P.S.
That's the only Good thing about it.
I've never Heard of a Doctor writing an Order for an Immersion Test, and depending on where you get it, they can also be over $100.

I have learned the bio- impedance method is pretty much worthless. I have a tanita scale and if I get on it 5 times I'll get 5 different readings. And I have read bio-impedance has an 8% margin or error 4 up and 4 down.

My place of employment has a free on site gym that uses a bod pod to test bf. I've used it several times as its a free service but I'm not sure that it's all that accurate. I've started testing myself with calipers using several different sites and an app on my phone. It's been very consistent.

I've Heard that the Bod Pod is Very Good, I just haven't looked for one in my Area as of yet.
There's Probably a Ton of places that have them, as I'm in the Philly area...................... JP
P.S.
I'm waiting for the Results of my Dexa Scan to come in the Mail, so I can see what's what.
I got it done because I was Diagnosed with Age related Osteopenia (bone loss).
