Off-topic: Helped a kid

EER

Evolutionary VIP
So I had to lift at my local towns "weight room". No joke there was nothing in there safe. The squat rack was very unstable and so was the leg press. Anyway I was in there lifting, and almost done, when a kid who looks like this walked in:
SkinnyNerd1.jpg

He immediatly started doing 1/4 squats with way too much weight and trying to use the leg press with more weight than I could do reps for, but going bout 1" lol.

He kept watching me and I could see he wanted to ask me something so I acknowledged him by saying, "whats up brother, I see you been lifting here awhile". He had a huge smile on his face and immediately began with a million questions. I prolly spent two hrs showing him proper squat technique (Goblet, back and front squats), Some dead lift ques. Told him to stay away from barbell bench for a while but use DB's instead (he had a major right arm imbalance) and showed him good shoulder building exercise to help with a cuff issue. Then I made him show me his pull-up form...ZERO. So we stopped there and I taught him assisted pull-ups, all kinds of rows, especially inverted rows.

Anyway I gave the kid my email and told him to ask away. The strange thing about the whole experience is I prolly got more out of it than he did...I felt "happy" all day.
Anyway, hopefully I helped a brother out and in return he'll pass it along to other future brothers and sisters.

It usually works that way. Our connections with others improve our outlook on everything. We forget that in the midst of our social media, forums and smart phones. Great to hear you had a good day EER!

Well the kid was like a sponge, so his enthusiasm just got me more jacked than a pre-workout lol. Heck i was ready to lift again. I teach as an adjunct in the fall at a univ and always get a "good" feeling when i see the "light" switch on for students, but i'm paid to be there. This felt a little different....shit who knows this kid maybe the next great powerlifter or baseball player.

if this kid was serious he would get his lazy ass online or to a library and start reading on how to workout.

when I was his age before the internets came along I checked out every weightlifting book at the library and read them. its great you helped him but I am skeptical he will get anywhere considering he has little drive .. we shall see though keep us informed

it takes a sick individual to go through the hell we put our bodies through and spend all this money on food, supps, and gear etc etc.

That's way cool bro. He will remember that probly for the rest of his life that someone cool helped him do things properly and safely instead of just watching him do shit wrong. Much respect on that.

Research and drive are great Steve, but maybe this kid has nobody taking an interest in him at all, and EER made his day. I try to use people's names if they have a name tag, I say hello or howyadoin to strangers. Sometimes a person just needs to feel noticed. We don't all require that validation, but it doesn't make them bad.

Steve, yea I thought about that but the kid is pretty new. He did mention 5x5 and riptoe. So he has done some research, his big problem was form and ego lifting. Told him we all start with the BAR, then go from there. We'll see and if he starts blowing up my email I'll let ya'll know. Problem is I'll never lift there again, and I recommended he come to the gym I lift at.

does he have a weightlifting team at school?

Dude this kid weighs 120-125lbs soaking wet. I have no idea but he seems like the kid that would get his butt cheeks duct tapped together...ya know what I mean. I have no idea what the local high schools r like, not from here and have little reason to be in contact with the system.

Your a cool dude EER , I don't lift at a gym so I can't reach out to kids about weights , unless they ask , but I love , seriously , I love to show new kids , or adults , men or women , my Mtn bike trails to ride and tips a technique to ride safer , faster and more confident . I have days where I ride past people , but those are training days but sometimes I stop and say let me show you the trails , let me show you a great time . My goal is to get that person to love that ride and dream about coming back for more . Their is nothing better then to see this exhausted rider with the biggest smile that he can't get rid of because of the ride I just took them on . It doesn't matter if my ride turned slow and less punishing . I had a great time anyways .

You might of just changed that persons life with your help , keep up the good work !

Caaannn Uuuu Diigg It ?

nah bro. he would lift in the 129 weight class. I was a weightlifting coach for 3 years is why I ask. they had weight classes as low as 119 pounds. trust me his school needs lighter guys like that. they are rare. also when I was in high school I competed in the 129 weight class myself and cleaned house.

definitely get him to join the team.

Well at my gym they compete and there is a girl who is in a very low weight class. I told him to come over...told him I'd go with him a s much as I could...we'll see.

I used to work at a franchise GNC. We didn't work off commission like the corporate stores do. My favorite part of that job was talking to the high school athletes and being able to give them honest opinions about products instead of pushing overpriced garbage down their throats. I've seen corporate gnc employees sell test boosters and fat burners loaded with stimulants to these high school kids just because they make money off of those and it pissed me off. At times I did feel like an extremely underpaid nutritionist/personal trainer due to the amount of people who would pick my brain and ask me everything they should eat all day, but that feeling of helping someone and going above and beyond the call of duty was awesome

Awesome to hear bro. That's why I joined this forum. People are much more inclined to help the inexperienced rather than ridicule them. I personally do better with a little hands on experience.

You're pretty much a shit bro, EER. All that vermodje gear you just got and you didn't even offer any up?? You should have duct taped that little twig face down on a bench and started pumping tren into him

Cool man, you just gave that kid the knowledge now let's see if he can put it too good use.

Way cool man. I think about the book Ray Stern wrote. Little scrawney kid who started lifting and came to love bodybuilding. Built a billion dollar empire through the fitness industry and attributed all his sucess to the disciplines he learned from bodybuilding. Who knows you might have changed the kids life today...

Or maybe you just motivated him to flex in front of the mirror tonight till he passes out? Jk

Thanks guys. I have exchanged a few emails with the kid. He is lifting at his local high school gym during the summer. He goes early. I have talked him into 4 day a week full body program, based on strength. He is getting form help from some of the coaches.

Nice job. We all started somewhere and sometimes all it takes is a little extra push and you can inspire the next Arnold.

^^^Agreed. Sometimes it's so good to give with no other reason than to help someone out. You never know when that will come back to you. Nice job EER!
