I think they are absolutely unnecessary and in most cases will just make you fat. Honestly, just go home after the gym and cook a meal. That is going to be a much better option than a supplement.
those are for people who slam insulin post workout
a normal joe doesn't need to do this.. even when i ran half marathons I didn't do this, is it completely unnecessary for a gym rat who lifts an hour at the gym.
I use them from time to time since they are convenient. They're nothing magic though. Most people would be better off just getting their carbs from food since it's more satiating.
