Optimal taking times

Hello I was curious to when I should be taking my protein shakes. Should I have it straight after I work out? Or wait a couple hours ? I have some buddies who drink it during the workout because they claim it helps them with recovery for instant absorption.
 
After a hard workout, your body is depleted of amino acids and glycogen. You want to get nutrients in after your workout as fast as possible to start the recovery process. You don't need to be obsessive and drink your protein shake in the locker room the second after you are done your workout or anything like that, but the sooner you can get some nutrients in after your workout - the better.

I will usually drink a protein shake and have a piece of fruit while driving home from the gym. I will eat a solid food meal about 90 minutes after that
 
the anabolic window thing had a nice run during a time where guys depended on supplement companies for bro science. supp companies want you drinking a protein shake 'right away'.. this was further pushed when guys started injecting insulin into their asses during the 2000's to help them 'get big'

with the info we have today we know that is bullshit for those non insulin users. you don't need to get in a protein shake after a workout. in fact you don't need to eat either. the 'anabolic window' lasts 24-35 hours

optimally though when it comes to working out. you want to go into a workout fasted, then eat after. not eat first then workout

having said that if you are a skinny twig eating after a workout is a good idea, in fact eating more food any time during the day is a good idea. you need to eat more. so yeah

my friend eats gummy bears at the end of his workout then about 20-30 minutes later he has a protein shake. Do the gummy bears actually do anything?
