About 10 years ago, I was getting massive cystic acne on my back, shoulders, and forehead. I tried everything, and as a last resort, I went with accutane. I ran it at a very low dose for a few months, and everything cleared up. It has never came back the way that it was before. I get a pimple here or there now, but nothing like it was. It is absolutely a last resort option though.

Accutane should not be used as a preventive measure for acne. It is an extremely potent compound that has very harsh side effects. First of all, it will hamper your overall performance during the cycle. Secondly, you would be going through all these problems without even having a real reason for that. Due to its harshness accutane should be considered as a last resort after you try out all other things against acne. You can start by doing the following:

1. Sun tanning is a very effective means of reducing acne and drying out the skin.

2. Use anti-acne lotions at least once per day. Go to your doctor and ask him to prescribe you a topical acne cream. It'll work better then anything available over the counter and your insurance will cover it.

3. Make sure you are showering 3 times per day: upon waking, after workouts and before bed.

4. Zinc containing creams are very effective and available over the counter. Apply them to your trouble areas.

5. Black ointment is extremely effective. It stinks pretty badly, but I am pretty sure you can deal with it for a couple of hours in order to get rid of acne.

6. Shaving foam is very effective in drying out the skin, and it is very easy to get in any shop. Apply it on the troubled area for 15-20 minutes, and wash it off.

Accutane works - there is absolutely no denying that. However, it is one of the worst compounds you can possibly take in terms of side effects. It is extremely liver toxic and carries a way more liver hepatoxic nature then any oral steroid.

Try the tips suggested by @levbutlerov first. If those don't work - then consider using accutane. It should only be used as a last resort.
