Hands hurt with dumbells

When I do dumbell press exercises, when they basically pressure my wrists, the palms of my hands start hurting pretty badly. Is this because the dumbells are not of a good shape, or there is something wrong with my form? I do use gloves, but they do not really make it much better for the palms. The pain is quite sharp, like when you carry around a plastic bag with bad handles, that feel like cutting your palms.
 
Are you wrapping your thumb around the bar, or just using your palm and fingers? Try placing your thumbs under the bar instead of wrapping your thumbs completely around the bar like a baseball bat. Keep us informed and you will most likely get other options.

Eventually calluses on your hands will form and the dumbbells will no longer cause any pain. In the mean time, using gym chalk will help reduce the pain. It puts a thin layer of chalk in-between the contact surface of the dumbbells and the palm of your hands and will reduce the amount of friction and tension your palms experience. If your gym doesn't allow you to use chalk, you can buy a product called 'liquid chalk'.
 
I saw a guy last month at the gym with two giant sponges.
He was carrying them around for time and I kept asking myself why is this guy carrying them round with him?!
Then he did some dumbbell bench presses and used them as cushions. Might help!? 😂

I go gym real early so this was about 5 am and it was just the two of us. I was scared to turn my back in case I got a surprise free sponge bath!

Lol, men are supposed to have rough strong hands, not dainty girly petite hands.

Keep working out no gloves and you will develope them quickly. The very few people that I see wearing gloves at the gym are the ones who look like they obviously have no idea how to workout, socks up to there knees and spandex liatard from the 80's.

What's funny about roller skates? In the 90's thats what us highschoolers did, we went to the roller rink for date nights. All meet up for a pizza and rollersKate around.

Question is whether or not to pick them calluses? I can't help it when I'm board I pick all that hard skin off. Reckon that's good or bad for the hands? I'm assuming bad

your problem is the gloves.

your hands are weak because you are keeping them weak

throw the gloves away and keep working on it. stop squeezing the dumbbells so hard, you should have a grip but not lock them hard like you are masterbating

over time your hands will strengthen. also I recommend deadlifts for hand strength, just don't be like some beta's at the gym and use those straps. again, the object here is to make your hands and wrists STRONGER, not weaker. so no more gloves and straps when you workout!
 
I like the suggestion of changing your grip when pressing to thumbs under as opposed to wrapping around. You will get arguments about safety but I have always used this grip. As mentioned, calluses will build up too. As for strength, I don't do any forearm work specifically for grip strength but it is an option. You could try farmer's walk or some forearm curls. I prefer to just deadlift and build my strength that way though.
 
I see that the problem here are the palms of the hands, and not the wrists themselves, just as well as forearms. This is not right, since the palms of the hands should not hurt all that much. I understand if you were lifting with a very thin bar that would have a very little pressure area. However, you are using dumbells, and they are supposed to have handles wide enough to be comfortable for everyone. The suggestion about changing the direction of the thumbs looks very interesting, and I would give it a try. However, try it first with light weights in order to make sure you can perform the exercise in this manner safely.
 
I have that problem with some of the Old DB's, when I go over 100 Lbs, cause they are so Thin, and I have Big Hands.
And I don't like using the False Grip, don't want a 100 pounder or more smacking me in the Face when I'm doing Incline Chest.
The Newer Ones have a Larger Diameter, and some of the Real Good Ones are Thicker in the Center, and are Neoprene Coated................ JP
P.S.
If you have Big Hands, you can buy Grips that Slip over the DB.
Grip4orce or Iron-bull, and there's some others.
 
I have a set of dumbells that have detachable weights on the ends and they roll. When you lift them, the weight rolls with your reps. Its way smoother and easier on the joints. If your problems continue consider getting a new kind of weights.

The handle is most likely pretty thin. Try to find a convenient position to hold them, otherwise switch to barbells
