L-Carnitine

I just bought RSP's L-Carnitine. I usually workout at 5:30am everyday. Can I take this on an empty stomach as a pre-workout, or is it more effective if taken with something else like food or vitamin? I really want to maximize the benefits of this amino acid so want to make sure I'm taking it right.
