Trying out Heul - Diary thread

Hi Guys

I have been looking at a product called Huel which interested me because I can count what I am putting in my body with a high degree of accuracy. As I am cutting getting ready for my first ever cycle I do need to have some control on what I am eating so it seemed like the ideal product.

A bit of background, this product is made out of plant based foods so it is fully vegan and very high protein. It is quite expensive at £45 for 28 meals so to be honest I am going to have to see good results to make me happy with my purchase, their default product is vanilla but they do offer an unsweetened version.

The package should be arriving in a few days so I am going to keep you updated about how it goes and also other things like taste texture. I will also report how it makes me feel during the day and any other problems or benefits.

I hope you enjoy the read

Nicholas

I went over to their Site, as I'm unfamiliar with this product.
Since it seems to be for EU residents only.

The Guy "Julian" in the Video, looks Horrible.
He's really Skinny and his Skin Color is Off.

Here's to Hoping you look much better than Him after your Cut...................................... JP
P.S.
Curious ~ why didn't you just go with a Whole Food Diet and add some good quality Whole Food Vitamins into the mix.
It would be Cheaper and more Beneficial for your Health when Cutting.

I agree with JP 100% on this one. I am not anti-protein supplements but I think you would be better off spending your money on high quality food rather then a meal replacement shake. The problem with plant based protein powders is that they have a very poor biological value. That's basically just a fancy way of saying how much of the protein your body can actually absorb and utilize. Animal based proteins have a much higher bioavailability.

I personally feel that you would be better off by purchasing a high quality whey protein isolate like isolation from n2bm.com. It'll have a much higher bioavailability and be cheaper then the supplement you are looking at. With the rest of the money you save, spend it on whole unprocessed fruits and vegetables. Possibly a good quality greens powder as well.

Hi jp

I would much prefer a whole food diet and it would definitely be cheaper and probably more beneficial, unfortunately I have been dealt a bad life card for the time being and I am living in 3 different places all 60 miles apart from each other and don't have full use of a kitchen so it really is about convenience at the moment. As soon as I am able I would definitely go whole food but as it stands at the moment this product seems to solve a few of my problems.

My plan is to try it out and see how things go and report on the progress here so other can know if its worthwhile or not, also I don't think there is any danger of me being skinny any time soon lol that is why I'm having to cut body fat.

Hi muskate

Thanks for your comment, kind of getting a bit worried about this product now with a bit of research I see what you say is correct about poor biological value. To be honest for the next 3 weeks at least it will be very difficult for me to prepare any kind of food that does not come out of a tine and into mouth. I am working on fixing this but had a mixture of good and bad luck recently.

I do have some hard hitting whey protein blend and bulking supplements in storage ready for my gains run, its frustrating for me because I can't start until I loose some body fat and get these kidney stones sorted but when the time comes I will keep a diary ect. Still trying to find a source that I trust but most of them want minimum orders that are quite high, want to do smaller order to build up trust if you understand there are a lot of scammers out there.

Why not try to eat fresh foods instead of cooking them if access to a kitchen is an issue? You can get veggies, and eat them without cooking, as well as many other things. I really think it is a good alternative. And there are many things that can be done in a microwave really easy. For instance, you can get your rice cooked in the microwave, then get a can of tuna, throw it in there, and voila - you got yourself quite a good meal without a kitchen.

Sounds something like soylent/joylent. I wouldnt do it personally, but of course, sometimes life takes a turn and you have to look for alternatives.

Let us know how it goes.

Hi Lev

I usually do eat raw veg, I am vegetarian so tuna would not be possible the thing is there is only so much raw veggies you can eat and to make up the daily calorie intake I think I would have serious digestion problems if you get my meaning lol. I have tried to make brown rice in the microwave and it is possible but takes a long long long time because of the nature of the brown rice.

To be honest after seeing peoples opinion on the stuff I don't think it is going to be that great and an expensive miss purchase but now it is ordered I want to give it a fair test and give an honest and accurate account.

Hi Jay

I just looked up soylent and it does seem to be the same sort of stuff, the only thing that sets them apart is that Huel is totally plant based with no animal products. Being vegetarian that is a plus for me but I am also realistic and for bulking you do need to use whey plant protein just wont cut it.

It arrived this morning along with a free shaker and a free t-shirt, it is less than 24 hours since I ordered and came very well packaged. Also in the package was a fact sheet about how much and when ect so I am very happy about the service aspect of the company.

Now for the interesting part, I opened one of the bags and cautiously had a sniff and it had a very sweet vanilla smell which was very pleasant. I followed the instructions using the supplied measuring scoop and got to shaking the life out of it, mixed very well but I did have to put some extra water in it. The taste was pleasant but unusual, it had an oats and nut taste mixed with the vanilla flavor and I did enjoy drinking it.

It has been about half an hour since my first shake and I feel remarkably full considering the volume of shake I have drank, no signs of abdominal pain or any other side effects yet but I will be sure to report again around lunch time after my second shake.

Bye for now

I have just come back from my power walk (do 3 miles at lunch at work) and still feeling kind of fueled from the shake this morning, by this I mean no shaking feeling dizzy ect. I am kind of craving a cheese sandwich but cheese is what I am trying to cut out, its always the cheese that messes my diets up but I'm going to stick with this for at least a week so my account of the product is valid.

On another matter I have been doing some sums and to maintain a normal diet (2000K) it costs £6.50 a day, for this money using normal food I could feed both me and my girlfriend without issue so it is quite expensive and while bulking the price would go up over double that so to be honest this product will need to seriously impress me this week for me to continue using it.

well now that you ordered it try it out and you will know

I'm not a fan of throwing my money to these online telemarketer guru's with their unfounded claims.

if you want to go vegan you can simply follow one of the many vegan bodybuilder diets, you don't need some fancy overpriced product

Just had my second shake, already the flavor is getting on my nerves the thought of drinking this for 6 more days is sickening I am going to have to work out some different flavors for it, additionally I am experiencing some abdominal discomfort but for the time being I am going to put that down to my body reacting to the change.

Bye for now, I will post this evening after third shake. That will be the real test if I am hungry this evening

I feel your Pain with the Flavoring.
This is why I switched to Unflavored/Unsweetened with my 100% Whey Isolate.

This allows me to change the Flavor and Sweetness as the Mood strikes.
I only use either Fruit or Real Vanilla or Real Cocoa to flavor my Protein............................... JP

I will be following along. It sucks that you aren't at a point where you can just eat whole foods but you are doing the best you can. I am interested to see how your results are and how the other flavours you try work out.

Disaster has struck!!!!

After two shakes I have just returned home and experienced a bathroom related emergency (not going to go into more detail). It is probably the shock to the system of going onto something like this so I am going to push on and see how things go. I am going to wait till later on tonight to have the days final shake.

@steve: I am starting to think this is not a wise purchase, now its here I will keep running it and reporting as a resource for others.

@jp: I have been looking at some flavors I could possibly add in, problem is I don't want anything to invalidate my experiment so I got to be careful to use something with a near neutral nutrient profile. I am quite resourceful so I'm sure I will find a way and I will be sure to post because they could be relevant with other whey products ect.

@masonic: Thanks for sticking around to follow progress, I will be sure to let you know what I come up with on the flavor side of things.

Thanks guys, I will post in the morning

It sadens me to see that you are having such a bad experience with this product, but I do appreciate the fact that you are writing here in detail your review - at least you will prevent others from getting this stuff and suffering the same problems. Hope things will get better for you, but the way your body is already reacting to this product is not a good sign. If you start feeling really bad, don't continue the use of this stuff - the money spent is not worth the suffering and all the trouble.

I am not surprised that your body reacts like this when you feed it powder all day long

Good morning everyone

Feeling a lot better after last nights "incident" but still have some abdominal pain but nothing severe. For the time being I am going to push on with the product because I don't want to give it a bad review if it is just my body getting used to it, please be assured though if it does worsen then I will pull the plug.

I have by breakfast shake ready and I thought I would share a tip on preparing this stuff, it is very important to add the water before the product I did it the other way round and it was very very hard to mix as clumps of dry product were stuck to the bottom of the shaker but if you put the water in first it mixes well.

I am very hungry as I have just got into work with not much in the way of food last night so I will post in an hour or so to report if I feel my hunger has been satisfied.

Bye for now

Ok, its been about 45 mins since I finished the shake. It did take me a long time to drink it because of the constant flavor but I have some ideas to cure this. One thing I have to say about this product is that it does make you feel satisfied I do not feel hungry at all and considering how I felt when I arrived is amazing for a shake.

When I finish work tonight I am going to post some pictures of how it was packed and what the powder looks like, I will also post what vitamin supplements I take each day

Ok lunch time shake, hope you guys all appreciate what I am going through in the name of science. I am so craving just chewing something lol

I will check back later

Thanks for all the updates brother. I am sorry you had to go through that little episode the other night. Hopefully you are all cleaned out now and recovered.

what is in that shit anyway?

Here is their website... https://huel.com/

Like I said initially, I really don't need see any real benefit to the product. I would much rather spend my money on good quality food and a good quality whey isolate protein.

Hi guys

I know I said I would supply some pictures tonight but I have not got the cable to connect my camera to laptop so it will have to wait until tomorrow night. Last shake of the day in about an hour or so (when I can bring myself to taste it) feeling fine now and full and surprisingly energetic. I am still not yet convinced its worth the money but I will reserve final judgement until the end of the 7 days.

@steve: It is made out of 6 ingredients. Sunflower seeds, brown rice, peas, oats, flax-seed and coconut. Also would have some vanilla flavor.

@masonic: Yes feel a lot better now thanks i'm going to have an early night tonight to catch up on the sleep.

@muskate: All things considered I think the only benefit is convenience and whole foods and whey would be better nutrition. It might work well with people to have on a commute but there are other products for that purpose.

As always guys thanks for the feedback and I will update soon

Sorry about the pictures I promised, you will have them tomorrow

Whenever I am in a pinch and busy there are 2 meal options I like that are very fast and easy:
1. no-drain tuna cans + almonds + plain rice cakes + a dried seaweed pack
2. A whey isolate shake + greens powder + almonds + plain rice cakes

Both of those do not require refrigeration, are extremely portable and can be eaten while driving etc.

Thanks for the updates - it is nice to see that you are doing better, and that you realize the advantages of whole foods. Anyhow, all of us have gone through some strang stages in our lives and have had weird experience, so this one is yours.

Good Morning

Just trying to work up the courage to have my breakfast shake, I think I am going to have to cut this short tomorrow being the last day. The instinct to eat real food is just overpowering and it is not practical to use this product for total nutrition, I am not doubting the nutrition value as my energy has kept stable and have not experienced any unusual hunger what it is its just not natural to not eat solid food and the same food was driving me mad by day 2. I will keep to it today and tomorrow and write a full review.

Sorry I could not see it through for the 7 days as I first thought, I will also get the photos to you when I work out how to post pictures.

Bye for now

your well-being and health is what matters, not the convenience issue

Hi Guys

Last days today, missing breakfast shake because I can't stand the thought of it. I have come up with a solution to my problem being quite transient at the moment, I have convinced my workplace to get a freezer so I can cook my weeks meals while I am at my parents and safely store them for the week. This is the best possible outcome for me right now as it allows me to eat proper food.

Over the weekend I will write my full review, thanks for following along guys you feedback was really appreciated and hopefully this will be useful for anyone else considering the product.
