Introduction

FrankMcGrath

Frank McGrath is a Canadian professional bodybuilder who became popular in the early 2000s. He is known for his sheer size and incredible vascularity. He also is known for overcoming injuries and car crashes to make his way back, making his story amazing. His stats are 5'11'' and 255 pounds in contest shape, and 300 pounds in the offseason, while sporting an incredible 28" waist.

We've updated Frank's information and this is the 2022 version of the excellent article written 8 years ago.  In this current article, we will go over his life, his successes, and his steroid cycle.

Before we get to that part, get to know Frank as he shows you his cooking abilities and his favorite way to relieve stress outside the gym.

Early years

Frank was born in 1978, in Newfoundland, Canada, and was super skinny as a kid and poor at sports. He idolized superheroes in movies and Arnold Schwarzenegger. As a teenager, he hit the weight room hard and started to get results quicker than his peers. He also spent his spare time learning about nutrition and wanted to be the next Arnold one day.

Early competitions

New found land loves bodybuilding, so naturally Frank was able to find some early competitions he could compete in. He dominated his peers in amateur competitions and that allowed him to move up to the Canadian Championships Super heavy weight category. His first time entering he got a disappointing 6th place, but he did not give up. In 2003, he got 1st place and officially became a professional.

Brief pro stint

Frank's initial professional stint was very brief when he got a disappointing 12th at the Toronto Pro Invitational in 2004. Although he was not successful in bodybuilding, he was making a name for himself online. He gained supplement sponsors like ANIMAL brand, owned by Universal Nutrition. He started to get featured on magazine covers including Sports Illustrated, Flex, and Men's Health.

In 2008, Frank was preparing to compete in the Arnold Classic when he tore his tricep in the gym.

In early 2010, Frank was T-Boned in a car accident and spent a month in the hospital. He lost 3 liters of blood, his lung collapsed, he damaged his shoulder, he lost his spleen, and his arm had to be stitched together. The doctors said he would never be able to bodybuild again.

Comeback and successes

Frank was eager to prove his naysayers wrong and he worked even harder once he was healthy. Amazingly, the next year he got 3rd place at the 2011 IFBB Tampa Bay Pro Open, 4th at the Toronto Pro, and placed 16th at Mr. Olympia.

He also got 3rd at the IFBB Pro Bodybuilding Weekly Championships in 2011, 4th at the 2013 Toronto Pro Supershow, and 6th at the IFBB Ferrigno Legacy. He retired from bodybuilding officially in 2018 without a huge contest record, however, he still was a huge hit online due to his personality and has focused on his social media. He left California, to move back to Canada, and moved on from promoting ANIMAL after 15 years as the face of the products.

Kidney issues

Frank-McGrath-Vascularity

It was revealed in early 2022 that Frank was on dialysis. This is the reason he has been losing a lot of weight over the past few months. He also was born with 1 kidney and he will need a transplant in the near future or he may die.

1 in 1000 people are born with only 1 kidney, so it isn’t that rare. Also there are another 1 in 1000 who only have 1 of 2 functioning kidneys. Many people have either of the above kidney issues, but don’t know it because they never had an ultrasound, or it was never found out, and they lead perfectly healthy lives without ever knowing it.

Social Media

Frank has quite a social media following. His Instagram for example has 600K followers and he posts funny pictures, pictures of himself, him working out, and pictures of food.

instagramHe also is all over youtube. Check him out doing a workout with popular Youtuber Tristyn Lee

He is currently promoting HD Muscle, Wrath, and Iron Bull Strength.

Training

Frank-Mcgrath-Hard Work

Although Frank admits his car crash still affects his training in some ways, he still pushes himself hard regardless. His training philosophy has always been to train heavy, even as a teenager he was benching 300+ pounds while his friends could barely do 1 plate.

Frank loves the pump on arm day, who doesn't? Check out a quick video on his bicep training.

His arms are his signature, and his secret is hitting them hard twice a week to force them to grow. He loves doing machines, free weights, and especially loves the EZ curl bar. His goal is to break them down and hammer them to the point where they are completely ripped apart. In total, we are talking 6-7 different arm workouts, which involve 3-4 sets each, and up to 20 reps per set. It isn't a workout for new lifters at all so don't try this unless you have some training under your belt first.

All in all, Frank is known to weight train a whopping 6x per week, taking just 1 day off.

Nutrition

Frank believes in eating as much food as possible, but believes in healthy and nutritious food. He shared a typical breakfast that he eats when he is traveling which involves eggs, pancakes, meat, and juice. He loves egg omelets and burgers when he is on the road.

At home, he is a very good cook and likes to experiment with different protein-based baked goods. Protein muffins, pancakes, and brownies are his specialty and he likes to add eggs, bananas, apple sauce, and chocolate chips to them.

He isn't a fan of just eating chicken and rice every day, he likes to have fun with his foods and keep things different.

Steroid Use

There is a picture going around on Reddit, that shows a picture Frank took of his meal, with a 3CC syringe under the plate. Joking aside, we all know that Frank uses steroids and likely started using them at a young age as they are much less stigmatized in Canada. Let's take a look at what he could have used ahead of his 2011 competitions to reach his peak.

    • 12-25IU's HGH, he would have adjusted this number lower ahead of the competition
