Wife having trouble loosing weight.

So she has been on a stricted diet as well as doing cardio on a daily basis.

Her doctor prescribed her some pills that are going to help her lose the extra lbs.
Im sure they are appetite suppressants.

what do you guys think.

Apparently they are not working and she has been on them for 1 month now.
They are also causing insomnia and mood change.

I think the possible side effects of Acxion would steer me away... I gotta agree with steve in saying a good diet and cardio is the way to go

morning-1 veggie juice./yogurt
noon- 1/2 fish fillet/white rice
5pm-veggie juice and almonds
8pm-cereal(honey bunches of oats)
drinks plenty of water through out the day.

can this still be side effects from postpartom 3 yrs later?
she always lots of insomnia and anxiety..

could likely be an underlying hormonal imbalance causing it.

thats not the greatest diet......

how about

plain oatmeal + egg whites + black coffee

6oz plain grilled chicken breast + green beans + 1/4 sweet potato or Greek yougurt + granola

steak or fish, 6oz. almonds, 5oz veggie juice

any meat for dinner, 6oz. any sort of green (lettuce, green beans, broccoli, whatever)

a snack anywhere she needs it. Needs to be very healthy, slow carbs/healthy fat/lean protein


pre workout, black coffee

this will also take some time. the sarm GW 505016 will also do quite bit, but she needs to get use to the diet.

Once she starts to see the LBS come off she can begin to cheat with sugar/salty meals or whatever her treat to herself is.

It sounds like she is starving her self that could be the problem The body thinks that's all it's going to get there it stores it as fat she needs to eat more than that and a more balanced diet that is not a good diet she needs 25/ 20/10 at least depending on her wt

really that's not a great diet at all.

is the fish fillet like fish sticks or something like that? or is it a plain fish fillet?

dairy should be eliminated, cereal should be eliminated.

is the veggie juice like V8? or is it real stuff. makes a big difference

she needs to eat more veggies and fruit and eat more. and then once a week have a re-feed meal.

"Starvation mode" is a myth
25/20/10 what is that? I'm thinking math isn't your area of expertise

If that's all she's truly eating she would be seeing the weight falling off of her. How is she tracking her food? She needs to be using a digital kitchen scale to weigh every single thing she puts in her body and then record it onto an app like My Fitness Pal.

Has she seen any weight loss? What does she do for work outs? How tall is she?

Search every hiding place in the house. I'm betting there is a stash of Snickers, M&M's and Doritos somewhere. The anxiety is from the kid and the thought of getting caught.

its plain fish fillet and she's got the juice maker to with fresh veggies.

She had it checked about 1 yr ago. Her insurance kicks in dec. so she will go for a follow up and FELICITY brought up a good point about hormonal imbalance.
she has all the symptoms.

She'd actually enjoy the diet plan GR laid out, and probably have very little trouble sticking to it. The other? Won't last a month, I promise. Patience is a must as well, seeing as how the weight wasn't put on in a week and won't be shed in a week. Good luck, and best wishes with both your goals.

Lets not forget, if someone is running on a 200 calorie deficit/day, a single soft drink can completely fuck that shit up.

Good call! Some other things to consider....she needs support. Tell her she looks like she's lost a little weight, even if it doesn't. Lol. If she was using a lot of caffine prior to dieting, and she stops all together, she could be retaining a lot of water. But, in any case, it takes time. Make sure her diet is "comfortable" and she sticks to it. BE PATIENT!!! Keep her encouraged and motivated. Once she sees it for herself, she may never look back.

Yeah man, starvation mode DEFINITELY doesn't exist. Thats why everybody who goes on a 1000 calorie diet ends up looking shredded like Thor yeah?

Obviously if you are at a caloric deficit you will lose weight regardless - but if your starvation response is active your body will preferentially hold onto fat over muscle, and your metabolism is almost at a total fucking halt, which is why your thermogenic response doesn't allow for you to lose AS MUCH weight as you could if you had a more balanced diet, and a healthy metabolic rate.

How about keeping a diary for 2 weeks and anything that is placed in mouth write down so you can go back and evaluate . Plus as we age the metabolism slows and one needs to work out smarter to lose fat

Another thought - when I'm actively dieting and burning fat - I actually force myself to eat . You actually have to eat smart but frequent. Starvation makes you hold fat. Consider bulimia and anorexia patients - they starve but the body although thin as a stick measure high percent of body fat. Starvation does not burn fat . One way newbies I've found can begin with a diet of cycling calories where 2-3 days go low, 2 days moderate and one day normal . Ususlly it's something you can live with. Still takes time effort . Add weight training and cardio ya can't lose. However do the diary idea - I'll bet many times eating not realizing it

Since no one has mentioned it i will. i doubt its hormones. its all diet. you can do cardio till you die and won't lose weight if you don't eat right. yeah what you laid out is healthy, but it isn't enough food. what she needs to do is learn about macros. its carb/fat/protein split. get her to go to if it fits your macros webpage (iifym.com) use the calculator to figure out what she should be doing in terms of calories. as for fats/carbs/protein split i would suggest 40 carb/20 fat/ 30 protein. theres other ways to split it that work but i find this is the basic one.

then download an app that is called myfitnesspal. its the easiest way to track calories and nutrients in food. if she stays in her macros and gets her ratios up PLUS works out she will lose weight. it is tough to keep the fats down as shell soon learn. its also hard to eat enough "clean" foods as the healthier you eat the more volume of food you will consume. i would give this a try first. no pills, no crazy cardio sessions.

with workouts i would have her go heavy 2 days a week. focus on squats and deadlifts. those exercises build muscle like you wouldn't believe and seriously strengthen core. she better lift like a dude! keep going heavier until it hurts! (in a good way of course) followed by either a very intense HIIT session for 30min or tabata training for 20-30min. its hard as hell if you do it right. she should be chalk outlined on the floor after every session.

bottom line its all about the macros. if she wants a really good guide for a woman get her to follow sara solomon. she has lots of nutritional videos and does tabata training vids for free online. my wife follows her and the results have been amazing.

i completely agree with this... when you starve yourself and get into that state, your body will react accordingly and not in a good way... there's a fine line you don't want to cross... its one thing to eat at a deficit that's still healthy and not nutrient deficient but its an entirely different story when its pushing starvation and nutrient intake is not kept properly...
 
I would really keep it simple. Start by having her write down every last thing she eats for 3 days...measured and weighed.

Unless she has a significant hormone imbalance, a hormone panel isn't going to help much and depending on what time of the month you do it, it'll look differently.

If she was only doing that diet posted and didn't lose a thing, I would suspect there's more food being consumed.
 
I guess my questions would be the following:

Where is she storing most of her fat on her body?
Does she have significant anxiety?
Does she notice how her body reacts when she eats certain foods? (Like, does she get sleepy after having something with more carbs/sugars)?
Any other health problems that may not seem like they are connected to her weight? (Irregular cycles, acne, mood swings)

1. front of the belly
2.red meat for sure so she tends to stay away from it. Usually get constipated
3. as of now no health issues. Icne for sure and mood swings kinda like bi-polar or some one similar.
 
did you look for the snaickers stash yet? No to be an ass, but she may be cheating. My wife hides swedish fish (red candies) all over the place, in the car, cookie jar, fridge - she is a swedish fish junkie.

First thing i'd do as I said would get bloodwork done. Bloodwork tells us SO SO SO SO much. Addressing a possible hormonal imbalance could be the "fix." I think a lot of possible outlets and good advice were given, however, if there is an underlying cause, it needs to be fixed in order to get them to work.
 
Some possible causes are listed below. These are only my opinions, so take them as just that. I do think it is very important for her to get checked out by the doctor and am happy to hear she will have coverage in December. Until then one option could be to try a diet meant for a diabetic. Many women have success with this when it is their hormones that are causing the problems even though they are not diabetic at all.

2. Age & Hormones - As you get older your metabolism slows down. Fat distribution changes as women get older and weight gain begins to shift to the tummy area.

Even if you’re not overweight, you’re more at risk for abdominal fat when you’re stressed due to the high levels of cortisol. 4. High Insulin - High insulin may also be attributed to excess body fat, especially around the abdomen. Chronically high levels of insulin can also lead to a pre-diabetic condition called metabolic syndrome (or insulin resistance) and type 2 diabetes, which only furthers weight gain. It's a given, but I have to say it, keep up with exercising!!

Good post. I wanted to reiterate privatemd labs is an option to check metabolic/hormone/lipids for less than $100.

Ditch the pills and save your money. Your simply loves to eat and forcing her to stay on a strict diet isn't going to help. You will have to be her dietician and not her jailer. Consider the the amount of food she eats and the calorie contents. Then next time around restrict portions and calories. Have drink freshly squeezed juices, fresh fruit, and vegetables will help you to get you "BABE" back.
One more thing, have you ever thought about intermittent fasting? It works for those that really want it to work, for others they complain it was a waste of time and effort.
It all depends on how much you want that small waistline.

A lot of people don't seem to understand this could be THE issue (to be more clear, I think people can comprehend it as a potential issue, but don't understand the details of how huge of an issue this alone can be). As I've posted before, I've worked with some people that were getting really overweight and made them get their hormones checked. After getting the results and getting them setup with docs to get their hormones corrected, incredible things started happening. Some were just reaching that age, while there have been times where meds were interacting with their testosterone negatively. But once their hormones were correct, drastic changes occurred. Its really incredible to see.

Its hard to work against biology. If your body isn't functioning right, dieting and exercise won't go as they should.

That said, this is NOT an excuse for lazy people. If you get checked and it turns out you have a hormonal issue, getting it fixed CAN POTENTIALLY seriously help. BUT if you're overweight and your hormones and what not are solid, hormones are NOT the silver bullet! There were times where correcting the hormones didn't make that big of a change with a client's BF%. I'm just stating it COULD be a serious issue.

I felt it was extremely necessary to make that crystal clear. I didn't want to leave that out and then see people being like "OH I HEARD TAKING HORMONES WILL FIX EVERYTHING!!! ITS WORKED WITH OTHERS!!!!! LIKE OMG I DON'T NEED TO DIET!"

Physique alterations isn't just a 2 dimensional subject. But in most cases, that 3rd dimension is already naturally handled.

I'm interested in your opinion on this for women. It's such a different ballgame hormonally for women. You could run a hormone panel on me 3 different times in a month and get different results. It's just not the same thing as getting some test HRT.....I'm not challenging you...I'm interested in your opinion. This is something I have researched and lived extensively and I'm always looking for new ideas and opinions.

I know a woman who is in her mid 50's who got her hormones on track and it was such a huge transformation. The thing was she did it all naturally and spend big $$$$ getting help. Our options through the actual medical field are limited it seems.

I'm also just gonna say....we are always looking for "answers" but until the OP's wife can track, weigh and count her food, we won't really know. If she runs a consistent diet for 21 days and absolutely nothing happens....maybe there's more to it. It never hurts to have regular physicals and get your blood work done but I, personally, think she needs to start with her food.

I'm going to agree with this more than having to get hormones checked. it was already clear that her diet was crap. if she doesn't actually follow a routine with proper eating then everything else suggested is a waste. i think the best bet is for her to regiment her diet, follow it for a month without skipping a beat, and then if theres still no weight loss then go get blood. I help my wife run a diet clinic and the one thing I'm tired of hearing fat people use as an excuse is "it must be a thyroid issue". how about man the fuck up and diet right for a month first and then lets take it from there
 
Ok so she has downloaded the My fitness Pal and will starting keeping track of what she eats including the portion sizes with a scale.
i got good feedback from everyone on her diet so I will tell her not to take those pills for now. Focus on the diet and training. Will keep everyone posted.

I'm going to agree with this more than having to get hormones checked. it was already clear that her diet was crap. if she doesn't actually follow a routine with proper eating then everything else suggested is a waste. i think the best bet is for her to regiment her diet, follow it for a month without skipping a beat, and then if theres still no weight loss then go get blood. Excellent points. The thing that blows me away is that so many people literally worship food. I don't get it. There's a hell of a lot better things to do than sit around and eat.

i agree... some people eat to live while others live to eat and although i can completely understand wanting to enjoy yourself here and there or enjoy your meals, some people treat it like an alcoholic or addict... i guess it is like anything else when you have an addiction, it can take you over and get out of control... i guess everyone has their own addictions... ours is health and fitness...

people get way to obsessive about food. its like they HAVE to eat this, HAVE to eat that, or i HAVE to finish whats on my plate. so what if you tell people you can't eat this or that. people need to learn self control. and just because one is eating healthy it doesn't have to be boring. people just need to learn how to meal prep and make food fun again. the one thing i do like about myfitnesspal is that if you work backwards and meal plan properly it will allow you to have that "discretionary" calorie. and if it fits your macros then it should hinder gains or losses. we are all only human. you can't tell me theres on person who doesn't overeat a bit over calorie intake a day. or even binges out once in a blue moon. food should be fun! not a chore, and not something to become obsessed with. Balanced lifestyle will keep training in check well as eating. once people learn that looking fit isn't the end all be all when it should be more just feeling healthy.

Buffets are a sad place, they definitely attract a lot of people with similar mindsets. I don't even think its about the food, its more a psychological aspect "I have to get the most for my money" because any buffet I have been to the food was not even worth eating, yet people just kept filling up those plates. Skinny people acted the same way also, its not just the overweight population doing this.
