Testing Powders

This is an informational post I thought I would share for those that like DIY.

I built and use my own melting point apparatus to get a fairly close determination of a powder. It won't test purity of course but it can tell you if powder x is supposed to melt somewhere at 246-250F and it melts at 238F....it definitely is not pure.
For those that may not know what a melting-point apparatus is... it is an instrument that will determine the precise temperature at which a substance begins to change from solid to liquid, a substances melting point. The tighter the degree range the more pure the substance being tested. For example Testosterone Propionate melts at 244-251 according to most chemical publications.

Incidentally if you had something like 80% test prop and 20% estradiol in your powder, the melting points don't average, even though the melting point of estrogen is 352F and prop is only about 248F, the combined substances will result in a melting point that is much lower than the lower melting point chemical, something like 225F.

I just thought that this inexpensive apparatus might come in handy for anyone needing to test a powder, obviously for research purposes.... Remember it won't test the purity but if your powder is supposed to melt at say 215F like cypionate and your substance melts at 240 or something outside of the true melting point range then you know it probably isn't what it is supposed to be. Further testing is warranted.

I hope this post may be useful for those that have an interest.
