May of you may not even look at carbs however, i value them, only problem is lately i haven't been hitting my carb intake but easily hitting my protein intake. When looking to gain size i feel i should be easily hitting my carb intake but i am not, do you guys personally think it is a bad think to increase carbs at night if i haven't reached my goal or at least have more carbs, perhaps milk and a peanut butter sandwich.. btw I'm 165, 5'8 looking to bulk up but i hardly have any noticeable fat, jus the occasional bloat as of now.. Obi after looking at my diet intake i will up the carbs this week more, i was under the impression i was eating to much carbs not enough protein..

Not sure I see enough info to answer but I would look at whole daily diet, identify percentages across fats, carbs and proteins that make sense. You will have to experiment a little. But I can say this... not going to gain meaningful mass and bulk without carefully monitoring and guiding your stoking of the furnace. Eating right on the way up is as important as eating right on the way down. The right mix will differ for every person. When I was 30, I went from competitive BB to power lifting... went from extremely low bf at 170 to 210 in a year. Got crazy strong but wow... my caloric intake was insane.... 4000 + per day.

DR

My stats:
53 yoa
5'8" 210
16% bf

Cortisol is lowest at night (if you're on a normal day shift for work), so carbs at night aren't a bad idea. BUT, you should be trying to spread the intake throughout the day on a bulk, with the largest amount of CHO in the peri-workout period (pre, intra, post). Carb binging at night should never happen, but nothing wrong with having a sandwich if you're a classic ectomorph that needs to shovel in some food. Use as little processed food as possible (e.g., use regular chicken/fish/beef/pork not cold cuts, and some whole grain bread).

I'm coming from the same perspective as Kman by the way - eating for performance, not single digit bodyfat

The only concern i had with fat was by body type, when i gain fat it goes right to my stomach lol, due to my body type i get a bit nervous when i see myself gaining fat but the scale being the same so that right there tells me something is wrong. Bloat maybe the issue, perhaps a pre workout i jus discontinued due to the bloated crappy feeling will ease the bloat away for good. But i will def consider more carbs post workout and much more after workout sometimes the timing is off. I need to prepare better in all honesty. Tmrw however is a new day, i will post my diet..

Timing first, then consider digestive enzymes if your appetite (or bloating/fullness issues) are stopping you from meeting your calorie needs. Also consider trying rice and potatoes (as well as fruit) over bread and pasta - they are usually easier to digest.

Pasta isn't a problem, I honestly think in my head that I'm eating to much carbs with in reality i don't think I'm eating enough, and i burn right thru them, calories must be the only reason I'm not at a heavier weight because i lift heavier than your average 165 lb person..

if you trying to stay lean bro...keep carbs low, especially at night..if you not at your goal just hit up more protein if it's late...

a good carb to take in at night is something like organic oat bran bro... try bobs red mill organic oat bran with a scoop of protein added to it and maybe drizzle some peanut butter as well... you don't want to go carb crazy but you can utilize n2slin to fully utilize your carb intake... you want to use them wisely... you don't want them stored as fat bro... if you use them properly, shuttle them to where they need to be at the right times with n2slin, etc... you can get the most out of the them... read some of this n2slin information to fully understand nutrient partitioning and what n2slin can do for you bro... you will love it... http://www.evolutionary.org/n2slin-v2-and-bulking http://www.evolutionary.org/need2slin

this one is easy

make some fresh pancakes every morning.. eat them with honey or molasses

you will get your carbs right in the morning and will put on weight

I drink 100 grams of oats and a scoop of protein 3 times a day. It works out at 210 carbs before really eating anything.

Also oat cakes and peanut butter isn't bad tasting and is a decent snack just watch the salt content of the oat cake.

as was mentioned, the majority of your carbs should come in the pre-intra-post workout timeframe, after that id spread them out throughout the day, it could be the type of carbs your ingesting thats causing the bloat, i found i have a hard time with wheat, so i go with rice and potatoes, gotta see what works for you, the oat shake idea is a good one, simple, easy to do and allows you to easily take in a good amount of carbs...

dylan's suggestion of oat bran is great and i think more people should pay attention to what their eating, oat bran is an awesome source of carbs and is almost all fiber, try it out and see how it goes

Def want to keep carbs low to get lean especially late in the day

Doesn't really matter when you consume your carbs, the most important thing is to hit your macros by the end of each day.

If you are wanting to bulk up a little carbs are crucial. I suggest plenty of complex carbs like oats, brown rice, and sweet potatoes.

It's not bad to have carbs late at night. That whole "no carbs past 6" is a myth lol on a prep I'd eat ice cream or something like that at night before bed to keep me sane and still get in contest shape. But what I'd recommend at night or close to bed time is to eat a slow digesting carb like oats. I hate oats but when you mix pb and honey with it, you will love it.

And what happens if i workout out at night to those who say carbs post. i jus worked out now i plan on having a chicken breast with rice.. and its almost 9pm.. carbs are critical after a workout I've read..

I do most of my carbs around noon and about 1-2 hours before bed. Not saying to eat this, but i eat PB and honey sandwiches on whole grain bread and usually 8oz or more milk and then usually follow with some raisin bran or whatever cereal i have at the moment. Shredded wheat i do as well because i like to make sure my morning ritual goals well when i wake up the next day. I've always been what people call a hard gainer, otherwise known as someone who burns through energy quickly aka high metabolism. A lot of people don't do well with loading up on sugar and carbs at night, but for some of us it's exactly what we need. Keep in mind you're most anabolic period is during sleep so that's your last chance to get in extra calories. I think you need a good bit of protein but carbs and fat is really what helps those that are like you and i.

Agreed, carbs are essential for gaining size but too much and too much later in the day can def put on unwanted fat. Complex carbs are def the best.
