I was watching some of the nfl scouting combine today and I was shocked at how some of the 300 lb lineman can't even crack 20 reps on bench press of 225 lbs. I know I test myself in this drill on occasion just to see where I size up. I can put 225 for 21 and I'm only 5 ft 7 190lbs granted I have done my fair share of cycles.

that isn't really true. you got small guys under 200 who can rip off 20 reps in the NFL, jump super high, and run a crazy 40 yard dash. the NFL athletes are the best hands down of any sport out there so not sure where you are getting your info on that

but yeah playing DT or guard and being 300 pounds doesn't mean you are going to be able to bench 500+. there is technique and skill involved, it isn't about who is the strongest dude in the weight room at all

It's a stupid test of strength that shows very little towards functional strength... walking lunges (with bar in front squat position) would be a much better test of strength that actually translates over to the sport.

I can get 315 for 21 full paused reps, though I'm certain some of the guys in the nfl would certainly best me on the field head to head, even if they may have been weaker in the bench test.

Some vs all and you've used gear.

Well you don’t see fat guys doing push-ups. That’s really where bench ability gets easier for skinnier guys I think. We can practice push ups and be able to push our own body weight many times where as a fat guy doing push-ups is like max out day every time. I dunno how they’re good linemen that way though.

Also has to do with arm length. Im 6'9" 255 pounds and have a 7' wingspan. When I lower a bar to my chest think of the difference in distance traveled.

Guys with shorter arms have an advantage.

Also leg strength and technique are key for linemen. You need to generate force period. Doesnt matter if its with your arms or legs you need to propel yourself forward and either try and get around the guy blocking you or if blocking you need to be able to meet that force and fend them off.

Look at DK Metcalf. Dude was off the charts but lasted through almost to the 3rd round. Why? Technique. Hes a gifted athlete but that doesnt mean hes going to be a star.

Tony Siragusa would lift in his local New Jersey gym in the offseason and meatheads would go up to him and ask "hey bro, how much you bench?" and he would fuck with them and say "600 bro".. in reality he didn't bench even close to that. again people think it is about who can bench more and who is strongest and it isn't. if that was true sumo wrestlers would be recruited to the NFL. you gotta have balance, skill, know the tricks, leverage, etc. to play DT. it isn't about who is strongest ever. i've seen 200 pound guys truck guys way bigger than them because they hit them square and use balance and leverage. you are taught from a young age to always tackle low for a reason and square up.

In the grand scope of things it doesnt mean anything. I'm 194 lbs and have done 225 25 times. I'm also 45 years old. But I would get owned on the football field. It's not my area. Lifting is

the misconceptions never end... just because you are bigger in size doesnt mean you can lift a lot of weight... thats not how it works... its far different when it comes to lifting weights than it is to just having different kinds of strength... go try to wrestle a guy that size and see how you do at your size and then see how much the weight you can lift actually matters... as my dad got older, he did not lift weights at all... i could outbench him by over a 100 lbs but if we got into it, i was flat on my back in three seconds...
