Old School Bodybuilding

What does everyone think the main reason for why Old School bodybuilders like Arnold, Ferrigno, Columbo, Olivia, etc. had very aesthetic physiques along with loads of muscle, compared to modern era bodybuilders which have 2 or 3 times as much muscle but are bloated and pig bellied? Is it because they used less steroids? less potent steroids? didn't use peptides/growth hormone/insulin? even some of the new school "ripped" looks are much different then a ripped old school look. The drugs are the difference?

No insulin and tren. Apparently there was HGH from human cadavers but it was hard to get. Most drugs were pharma grade so they didn't need stupid high doses. I'd say steroids back then were more potent than today's equivalent.

Insulin and Growth Hormone are a huge change. I also feel guys were a lot more focused on their training techniques and diet plans that guys are today. Watching the old Pumping Iron you can see how these guys made love to the weights during the set, now FW to videos of the top pros today blasting out reps. A lot easier to kill your joints with bad technique day in and day out when GH is in the fridge. I think focused changed from training and dieting to now just drugs and genetics. Olympians today are born and the drugs just bring them out.

1. HGH, insulin abuse which is a biggie, synthol, and different approaches to drug dosages

2. the 'old school bodybuilders' you see in videos were not the norm. I guarantee you had just as many skinny and fat guys back then as you do today.. the AVERAGE gym rat today is much stronger, muscular, etc then the average gym rat of the 70's.. its just that when you see videos online its cherry picked people you see.

3. go to a high school and watch a weightlifting competition.. the dudes in fucking high school today are lifting way more than even professional athletes were in the 70's... the top high school football teams would clobber a professional football team from 40 years ago. its not just the drugs.. its that we have come a LONG WAY in terms of nutrition, recovery, supplements, and everything.

trust me I coach/judge high school weightlifting and the difference just in 5 years is incredible. just imagine over the course of 40 years what sort of progress has been made.

your exactly right about the diet and training... everyone is looking for a short cut more than anything now and its quite disturbing... all well said

yes, as time there's improvements and enhancements everywhere... the problem is MENTALITY... its just like an nba team... of course the guys are far more athletic now but you know what, the best TEAM always wins... fundamentals are what wins games, guys that play well together... this dates back to the beginning of time... mentality now is a shortcut on everything and not putting in the work that is necessary... i made the same mistakes when i was young and it cost me my basketball career... i won't ever make those types of mistakes again... complacency, outside influences and lack of self intrinsic motivation are prevalent and its sad... if one can't find it within to motivate themselves and truly WANT IT, then nothing will be fully achieved...

Better drugs today, higher doses, HGH, insulin, peptides, and genetic freaks are what creat the mass monsters of today. Ironically most people prefer the pleasing look of Arnold and the other classic bodybuilders of the 70s and 80s (myself included)

I prefer the classic era as well. Arnold, Zane over cutler,
Coleman, Kai, Phil Heath any day.

didnt screw around with slin and hgh as much.I think that is the reason why.

so Tren is a more modern look? I was thinking insulin and HGH - but that's the most obvious probably.

The mid section difference is GH and slin but tren is THE steroid of steroids. Arnold didn't have the God of steroids. Tren can almost do what GH and slin can do but without the belly Id say.

The old school was a much better look. They just looked better, and I feel like AAS wasn't abused as much as it is today
