preserving....

EVO V.I.P
I think this is a pretty interesting topic. I know I've read tons and tons of posts about "boring diets".... yes, I'm sure when you eat the same old stuff day after day it gets boring....but you don't have to.

I preserve so many things. ...I modify lots of recipes to eliminate sugar, salt etc. But "canning" or "preserving" is an awesome and fairly easy way to keep fresh healthy foods in your house all year long. For example in my area strawberries are coming into season....very very soon. I make strawberry jam. ... (again modified recipe). In the summer....my husband and i literally make 100 jars of marinara (used for chilli, pasta etc), 150 jars of fresh salsa (used for literally everything), ketchup, bbq sauce, pickles, beets, and so so much more. It's a lot of work. ...but so worth it.

When I tell you that between my fresh meats and fish, fresh eggs, preserved jars...I literally have the smallest grocery list ever.

I'm wondering how many of you guys preserve...???? Whether it be freezing, canning etc. ...

I'd love to hear about it. ..

i like preserves...my girl boils up them somehow and like seals...i dont know how but i did help one time like closing lids...burned my damn hand lol...she is a foreigner so like she even preserves fruits which i didnt know can be done....

I have been living in many counties, and have seen many nations to preserve food, especially those living closer to the north, where all the food is seasonal. It is a very convenient way of have a greater variety of food year-round.

You're Living the Old School way.
When People did this to Survive, they kept their Weight in check much easier.
And Instances of HBP and especially Type II Diabetes were not Common place as they are today.................................... JP
P.S.
This is the way I grew up.
My Mother would Can most everything when it came into season.
P.S.S.
We had a section of the Basement called "A Cantina" or Cold Cellar where everything was kept.
Nice to see someone still doing this.
Thought I was a Dying Breed.

I don't preserve anything myself but it would be a great way to save money. I buy what I plan on eating within 3 days and then go back.

I might freeze some fish or fruit but that is about it. using spices with fish is a great way to conserve it

It's nice for me to hear that I'm not alone. And your right. ..it's so old school, lol. I grew up with my mom and my dad canning all summer long. It's a vivid memory...my kids are involved as well and I hope they continue it. My parents, although divorced, still preserve and "live off the land" so to speak. My mom makes a living doing it, a damn good living, so with being so busy and handling the business aspect of it, she doesn't do as much. But my dad is hardcore....hunts, fishes and harvests everything. He smokes, dehydrated and so on. I love it!

I wanted to bring this thread back in the mix. It's prime preserving time. ....most fruits and vegetables are plentiful now and you can get them from your local farmers markets and stands for decent prices.

I've been canning since last week.....everything tomatoes. Sauce, salsa, stewed tomatos etc. It's an awesome way to avoid sugar, preservatives etc in store bought crap.
