I had back surgery 5 months ago and it's taking longer than expected to get my strength back and I am struggling to get my lats back in shape I can't seem to be able to do more than 4 pull ups, what would you suggest? thank you.

Brother - you had surgery 5 months ago! Being able to do 4 proper pull ups is nothing to scoff at. You would not be surprised at how many people can't even do a single push up.

Be patient. Rome wasn't built in a day. What I would do is put a small stool under the pull up bar and do as many pull ups as you can without assistance. Then, after you reach failure, use your legs and do 'jump' pull ups where you use your legs to help you to get a couple more reps.

Keep doing that and eventually you will be able to do 5 pull ups without assistance, then eventually 6, then 7 and so on...

I like Muskate's suggestion with the Lat Pulldowns.

Some Gyms have the Assisted Pull-up Machine, where you can select the amount of Assistance needed........ JP
P.S.
Don't know how Invasive your Back Surgery was, but don't Rush it and get hurt, it will come.

Back Surgery has come a Million Miles since I had it done in 77', yes that's 1977.

He didn't mention the lat pulldown. I did.
