Roelly Winklaar Athlete Profile

Roelly Winklaar has been a force in professional bodybuilding for the past decade since earning his pro card. Known for his monster physique and 24" arms, he stands at 5'6" and 295 pounds at his peak, making him one of the biggest bodybuilders of all time considering his height. He spends his offseasons in Curacao and Amsterdam with his family, but does a lot of training in Kuwait at the world-famous Oxygen Gym when he is in contest mode. Early life

Roelly was born in 1977 on a Dutch island called Curacao, which is north of Venezuela and east of Aruba. Known for its beaches, coral reefs, and coves, this island is 170 sq miles and has a population of around 150,000.

As a youth he was a gifted athlete, doing very well at gymnastics and bodyweight exercises. He always took an interest in bodybuilding and competed in numerous amateur shows and placing high. While he was a teenager his arms continued to grow and he didn't even need to isolate them, that is how good he admits his genetics are.

In 2004, he was involved in a car crash that almost killed him. While in the hospital he realized that he had to take advantage of his genetics and get more involved in bodybuilding. He also had a motorcycle accident.

Earning a pro card

Roelly spent the rest of the 2000s focusing on building his physique, training hard, and putting in a lot of hours in the gym. Unfortunately, his lack of understanding of nutrition hampered his improvements to where he wasn't ready to turn pro. To get through this hump he hired the best trainers in the Netherlands to help guide him.

He reached his goal in 2009 by winning the NPC Arnold Amateur Championships, which made him officially a professional bodybuilder. The next year he won the 2010 New York Pro, finished 7th at the Arnold, and 14th at Mr. Olympia.

In 2011, he finished 2nd at the British Grand Prix, 2nd at the Mr. Europe Grand Prix, and 3rd at the FIBO Power Pro Germany. Over the next 2 years, he competed in over a dozen major contests finishing top 10 in all of them. He was also 12th at the 2012 Mr. Olympia.

He won the 2013 IFBB Chicago Pro and the 2014 IFBB Nordic Pro.
His other Mr. Olympia placings were 12th in 2014, 7th in 2015, 6th in 2016, and 6th in 2017.

2018 would be a banner year for him. He not only won the IFBB Arnold Classic Australia and EVLs Prague Pro, but he also finished 3rd at Mr. Olympia just behind Shawn Rhoden and Phil Heath. Roelly had 27 points, Heath had 17 points, and Rhoden had 13 points, so it was a very close top 3 finish and some thought Roelly was the best bodybuilder on stage.

Roelly came back the next year and got 5th at the 2019 Mr. Olympia, but had to skip 2020 due to testing positive to COVID-19 while en route to the USA. Earlier that year, he also opted out of the Arnold Classic to spend more time with his family.

The next year in 2021 he came back and competed in 6 competitions, getting 2nd at the IFBB Europa Pro, 2nd at the IFBB Yamamoto Pro, and 11th at Mr. Olympia.

Training

Roelly's public training program is a 5-day split routine where he alternates muscle groups.

His rep range varies, on some splits he will go as low as 4 or 5 reps, but on others, he may go up to 15 reps or more to get a nice burn. Each days split is 20-30 sets where he will wipe out one part of the body, then move on to the next on another day, and so on. His splits include abs, back, legs, chest, and shoulders.

Diet

Roelly eats A LOT of food. He sticks to a 6 meal a day plan which will include a lot of protein. His favorite muscle-building foods are oatmeal, nuts, eggs, broccoli, fish, chicken, bananas, rice, and green vegetables.

Over eating has gotten him in trouble before as he has come in too big in competitions. Many industry insiders say if he can control his diet better, and focus less on size and more on being trim, he would do better.

I can see why Roelly is so popular. He is a scary looking person, but once you watch his videos and get to know him more, you realize he is just a big teddy bear. Perhaps that is from him being an island native bringing that goofy and laid-back personality? Whatever it is, he is a fan favorite and guys like Roelly who are big personalities are important in bodybuilding to make the sport more fun and less boring.

To be that huge at his height requires tremendous genetics, diet, training, and of course steroids.

The laws in Kuwait are very loose when it comes to steroids, so he can train there and use steroids legally with no problems. It is likely he is on some very heavy steroids during the season. Let's speculate on what he might be using:
