Blood Work My Eye Opening Experience With Canadian Healthcare

First and foremost, I want to give a shout out to @HarleyGuy for encouraging me to share this story, start a log (coming shortly), and welcoming me and all my questions. Thank you again bro for all the help you've given me thus far.

For context, I reside in SW Ontario, Canada, am 31, 6'0, and in April of this year (2026) I weighed in at 375lb. I hated, and was becoming increasingly fed up at, my current state of being.

I was speaking to a close friend and he suggested peptide therapy which I had never even heard of, specifically Retatrutide, and told me to do my own research, which I of course did as thoroughly as I could. A couple weeks later after lots of reading, watching, and listening, I decided to make the commitment to this journey and got myself some Reta, tested my vials etc. but did not start pinning because I wanted to do the responsible thing and see a doctor first.

At the start of May, I'm at my appointment with my primary care physician. I told him I want to get back on the horse and get my life back together again, and I'm hear to request a full physical with a "comprehensive blood work panel to establish a baseline". He agreed and after taking my weight, blood pressure, etc. we sat down to discuss the lab work. I restated what I was seeking, and specifically mentioned I'd like to have my hormones checked as well. That was immediately shot down with the explanation of "I can tell just by looking at you testosterone is not an issue" (because I have a full beard and good hairline??), "you seem to have no complaints about mood, energy, sleep or stress so checking hormones is not needed". Okay then I'll go f*ck myself I guess. I then asked to have at least the rest of my basic health markers to be checked to which he replied "That's no problem, but I will add and remove markers as I see fit". Okay then I'll go f*ck myself again I guess. Next, completely unprompted he says "Depending on your progress in a month, we can possibly add Ozempic or Wegovy to help you, but PLEASE do not take any "internet peptides" as they are [completely fake, do not work, and are social media scams]". This was legitimately a 5 minute emotional rant/tirade. As you can imagine, the though of even bringing up Reta to him didn't sound too appealing to me at this point, so I shut my mouth, thanked him, took my requisition and went off to get my blood work done.

I began my Reta protocol, 1.5mg per week (1.0mg on Sundays, 0.5mg on Wednesday). Over the course of 3 weeks I have dropped 25lbs, while maintaining a cleaner diet, and semi consistent workout regiment. (More context to this will be in my log).

Fast forward to this current week, the last week of May 2026, and I had not received my results even though I was told they would be emailed to me. So I went to the office and asked the receptionist for the results for my own records. She handed me one page, which I will share here. I'm not much of a doctor but I don't really think I need to be one to see these results were less than a "comprehensive baseline".

So I decided to go see my naturopathic doctor, who has always been much more of a willing listener, and has never skimped on blood work. She didn't even flinch or raise an eyebrow when I mentioned Reta as part of my life, and actually nodded in approval. I took the requisition and went to the lab the next day. The results were emailed to me a day later, with suggestions to improve certain markers, while also noting how my current Reta protocal should begin to correct these markers, along with the fat loss. These results will also be attached for everyone to view.

I decided it would still be best to take these results to my primary doctor to review, and compare with my inital lab work. Initially he praised the weight loss, slightly improved blood pressure, and blood work. He was geniunely impressed. He asked what I had been doing this month, and I explained everything from above, and lastly brought up Retatrutide. His mood and vibe did a 180. "What's Retatrutide, I've never heard of that". I explained its an upcoming triple agaonist GLP1 medication, that is currently in clinical trials with promising results, the benefits, and what I myself had taken was gray market, but I had personally had my vial tested. I explained to him that this past month, I've felt better overall than I have in a very long time, and that for the first time in my adult life I had a stable relaltionship with food and felt in control of my eating habits, with consistency that I've never had. What followed was somewhere between a 10 to 15 minute back and forth of him being visibly angry, dissuading me from using Reta because "you don't know it's real", a push to prescribe me Ozempic or Wegovy, and repeatedly questioning why I chose to take a "random internet drug". I calmly offered to show him the published clinical trials results from Eli Lilly that was published to investors, explained that I prefer the flexibilty of being able to choose and control my own dosing, and also offered to show him my Janosik results. Suprise, he also had no clue what Janosik was. At the end of this back and forth he concluded with "Well if you're not going to listen to me, I don't want to waste time. Mine or yours. I'll give you a list of doctors who are accepting new patients. I'm willing to follow up in 3 months if you choose to do 1 more round of blood work at that time, but after that I will no longer be your doctor". I thanked him for his time and care for the past 8 years and was handed the list of doctors... which was a list of doctors who were accepting new patients in June of 2024.

So, here I am today and for all intents and purposes do not have a primary physician. I do plan on committing to PED's, and do not plan on dropping Reta, but am unsure how to navigate this without a doctor I can sit down with to help me interpret what's going on in my blood work.

To everyone who's read through all this, I'm open to suggestions and help of any kind. What should I look for when trying to find a new doctor, what are some tells or indicators that a specific doctor would be able to aid me in my goals, or is somewhat open to a patient controlling their own life turn around in their own way, and is willing to focus on harm reduction, instead of my way or the highway?

Wow what a story bro! Amazing post about our "Free" Healthcare system. I love the title you ended up deciding on and your writing is excellent and you gave me a few chuckles reading this. LOL "random internet drug" :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:. Your story read like a sad novel with villain antagonist doctors in it. I'd take any MOD and learned EVO member to be dealing with my charts any day over the average GP here in this damn province. Quacks!

Your bloods look pretty good. CRP is high and insulin but that's probably to be expected if you were diagnosed with anything? I didn't catch that if you were, otherwise this is too high.

"I can tell just by looking at you testosterone is not an issue" ⬅️ infuriating! 🤬🤪

Thank you as always bro! Working on the log currently, will be posted sometime Sunday during the day.

Yeah tbh I couldn't believe some of the deductions or inferences he was making considering this is a medical professional , or even simply being oblivious to what Reta is and it's existence. Really mind bending to hear all this from a doctor, and really changed my perspective on them too. I've been naive for too long.

No I have not been diagnosed with anything (This will be added to log). I'm just a very, very large human. (for now).

Working on the log currently,
Yes bro! Based on our DM's and this story I have a good feeling about you. I'm really looking forward to your log, tag me in it so I get to it fast and we can get this journey started with the EVO Family.

No I have not been diagnosed with anything (This will be added to log).
Ok well I'm concerned about the CRP and Insulin but once you start your log I can guarantee with all the wisdom on here and you being willing to do bloodwork we will get this in check for you and position you for a journey with us that will get you where you want to be brother!

I'm just a very, very large human. (for now).
That's great! The more weight you have to lose if that's what you want then more poundage there is to cheer you on to keep losing! No judgement here only success and applause brother! Don't feel sheepish either about posting a base physique pic for your log avatar we have tons of inspirational "large human"'s on EVO that are doing exactly what you're doing now too and they are all rock stars!

I couldn't believe some of the deductions or inferences he was making considering this is a medical professional
Complete "I read it once and forgot it" GP's owned now by Big Pharma. Complete waste of time is what they are. I'm constantly informing my wife's doctor on what should be tested along with how to read bloodwork that goes beyond looking at simply what's "high" and "low". Ridiculous. My stepsons doc put him on a drug I knew sent prolactin through the roof and his doc had no idea what I was talking about. I had her send him for bloodwork and his prolactin was through the roof. "Well that's a first, you learn something new every day" was her response. So frustrating. He's 12 and I told her I don't want him starting puberty with his prolactin in the stratosphere. I go now to ALL the doctors appointments of my whole family including my 80 year old parents.

The best thing you can do is educate yourself and treat your dr like what they are (prescription writers) present your strategy and get their feedback.

...after my car accident, I had a dr who ordered bloodwork (no hormone panel) and wanted to sign me up for an experimental brain magnet treatment at the hospital!!!

You have to make them think that the solution you want is their idea 😅 (because they are the "expert" and you are just a pleb)

Somethings, like the harm reduction side you can understand...but they are at no risk of losing their license if you source reta (for example) and just want bloodwork to make sure everything's good.

medicine can get frustrating. at the end of the day you need to remember just like any profession you got the top 5%.

auto mechanics
accountants
denstists
etc.
and yes doctors

a great doctor you aren't going to be able to get in to see them for a long time. the best cancer doctors its months waiting list. that is the unfortunate truth as we face a huge shortage of doctors in north america and its getting worse with the recent restrictions

I might... maybe...have gone on one at this point. lol

Makes you wonder if that doctor ever actually helped anyone in his life. What a jerk. So common too.

Testosterone with your Reta will be great. Didn’t see e2 or total test. High prolactin raises an eyebrow as well as high crp. Those need to be figured out. Reta is known to decrease inflammation and you’re already on it. Hmmmmm

Yes sir, ready to work and keep it rollin!

It was really surprising as well how completely dismissive the professional was of all the evidence I was openly willing to provide on the spot to show the measure's I took to be as safe as possible.

Oh well, onto the next!

Yeah agreed. Thankfully I currently don't have any pre existing diagnosis that need's to be monitored under the supervision of a PCP or specialist in general. I'll gladly take my time and be put on a wait list to ensure I get the help I need. I personally don't feel the need to rush at this moment in time.

I went under this assumption too. I think maybe he had liability concerns, or in general it was just something he was extremely uncomfortable with overseeing. Regardless, the next script writer is hopefully a little more lenient, or convince-able that the solution is their idea :ROFLMAO:

Yeah you're correct, those markers were not tested, and I brought them up to the prescribing naturopathist and she apologized and said they would be added to my next round of blood work through her.
It would've been nice to know what my inflammation marker was at the start of the month, but... well you can see what happened here 🤣. I do wonder if since its only the first month of Reta at low dose (lower than clinical trial starter dose) that maybe after a slight titration up for the month of June we'll see some improvement with that inflammation.

My ortho is the doctor for the Houston astros when they are in town for spring training.

My realtor and accountant are also the best on the entire east coast.

Always gotta get the best in any profession

What should I look for when trying to find a new doctor, what are some tells or indicators that a specific doctor would be able to aid me in my goals, or is somewhat open to a patient controlling their own life turn around in their own way, and is willing to focus on harm reduction, instead of my way or the highway?
thats free healthcare of you thats not free but paid for by your taxes! but we have insurance here and its not amazing either, I'm not sure what the perfect system is tbh

I had a similar doc. Literally my family doctor from birth. Mind you he was still my doc til he retired but i when i asked about cbd oil for my epilepsy years ago he staryed yelling at me that its just a gate way drug with no proof and eventually ill do heroin.

Shit was crazy, he when off like a bomb.

Incase your without a doctor, theres online doctors and also online urgent care docs as well. They do video calls etc.

Urgent care docs even online i think have areas they cover. I video called one, she was in bradford or brampton and handle simcoe-muskoka region.

Did you go to lifelabs or dynacare?

Thank you, I'll look into online doctors as well! Never considered that as a temporary option.
The first set of bloods was done at Dynacare, the 2nd set at Lifelabs.

How do I feel regarding the situation? I feel pretty neutral about it, the doc is entitled to feel how he does about non prescribed treatments etc, I'm just still surprised over the lack of professionalism, in my opinion, that he showed.
How I feel in general? Over the past month a sense of contentment in the sense of progress is being made, I feel lighter in my soul, or happier is a way to say it. Energy levels have been good overall, no fatigue or anything of note. Getting into lifting consistently has felt like a bit of a drag because I haven't been feeling that sense of accomplishment or that post lift rush of good vibes that I remember feeling.

My friends dad is a surgeon and pain management doc and he did the saaaaame thing. It was shameful.
My father in law used to carry a tool bag for his pills, once he got on medical marijuana he was able to drop 90% of them.

But the Dr's here flat out refuse to prescribe it...you have to go to a special dr to get it.

I had a medical card for a few years. I don’t really need it though. It was always funny to go straight to the front of the line. More than once someone said to me “thank you for your service” assuming that I was a soldier with ptsd hahaha.

@LevButlerov thanks for tagging me here.

@iceram what you did is nothing short of respectful. If I was in your place, I would have gone ballistic.

See, all these "Canadian Doctors" they don't know shit. All they do is get there degree so they can milk the system, talk to people about what THEY want to talk about and force drugs on them THEY get paid to prescribe. They get paid for each appointment, at minimum $80 and maximum $300 (as far as I know) And they are the ones who decide how much they are gonna file it for, when you go to a doctor at your appointment time, even then you have to wait a while right? that's cause they are just sitting in their room along, doing nothing, just so they can pass the time and actually bill for more than 20 mins so they go over the $80 mark. They are always opposed to anyone using anything they didn't prescribe cause they don't get paid for it.

When I was in Ontario (I lived all over GTA for about 3 years), I went to one doctor and he was repulsive to the idea of me get a blood test done, specifically for my test n all, I told him that he needs to understand I am in sports, I have to take care of myself and while he has to hop on his lil doctor portal to search for terms, I have been researching them for maybe before he started studying for his degree, so if he is going to write me a test, well and good, if not, goodbye. He quietly wrote me the test and then said, "if you test is in normal range, (Which it was going to be since I wasn't using anything) I will not write a prescription for you to get it." I said, "Good, I brought over 30ml with me from Pakistan, don't need a prescription!" He was shocked and I rocked!

He never dropped me, and wrote me a test every time I asked him, even over the phone.
Now here in Calgary, my doctor that I got was super chill, I told him what I am going to do and he said, "oh I don't need to know any of it, you don't have to tell me." I said, "I am telling you cause if I feel like you will work with me, I might have a few things to ask one day." He said, "Well I cannot prescribe you with steroids n all." I said, "I know, just want to know you will provide me with advice if I ask for it." We both agreed and he was super chill about it. We joked around as well.

Now, the same clinic, put me with a different doctor, who is new there and taking on some of the work load from the doc I originally talked and have my two appoints with. This new doctor, I went to meet and he said, "I do not know why your testosterone is so high!" I said, "You haven't checked my history or spoke to doc xxx?" He said, "well there's nothing in your history and doc xxx said you are a great guy. - we should talk about this and bring your numbers down somehow." I said, "No, I will take care of the numbers, I just want you to write me another blood test with all what we did and xxxx as well." He said, I advice you don't use any testosterones, why are you using it?" Me: "Cause it helps me in recovery and I feel good!" Him: "I disagree, I don't think that's true!" Me: "Well, you can think what you want that's fine. I am guessing I can get the bloodwork document from the front desk?" Him (shocked): "Ammm yes, sure." And that was that. Once my blood test came in, they called me again and the receptionist said doc yyy wants to schedule an appointment for your blood work that we got. I told her no I don't need it, it will be a waste of time cause I don't want to discuss them. she tried pushing it I said that she should talk to someone else who actually needs the appointment as I don't need one. I will call when I need a blood test again. she was surprised and we said bye to each other.

A few days ago, I called my clinic, spoke with doc yyy asked him for a blood test paperwork and told him exactly what I need. Without question, he said okay. and I had the paperwork with me in less than an hour of the call.

I really fucking hate all the libtards who say Canadian health care is so good, we don't have to pay etc etc. I tell them that they haven't ever experienced healthcare anywhere else in the world and they pay a fuck ton for the shitty care they have here. On top of this bs we still pay our private insurance which is also bs.

I am happy you got your ducks in a row. My advice, find doctors and in your meetings with them, tell them about reta and all and say you are a laid back guy and just need a doctor to help you and work with you especially when you need blood test so you can live your life optimally. If they agree, go for them, if they don't, find someone else. - Maybe a good idea to find a pakistani or even an indian doctor, as you can be more casual with them and there's more of a chance they won't be that uptight.

LMFAO, awesome.

Thanks for sharing and the advice, I'll definitely be taking the search for a non uptight doctor into serious consideration. The doc from the post shared some of the dork-like traits you described.

I feel steroids should be a personal choice same with TRT, there should be bodily autonomy for us, please read this thread about it @iceram

bro you have no idea, these fucks here in Canada will offer MAID to those suffering from a migraine or joblessness while serving the meth heads so well that they get all the shit they need from our taxes.
We have the same issue in some states here too. Homeless meth heads housing (huh?!? right) while not supporting public housing for actually lower income people with jobs.

Pretty typical with our socialized medical system. If you don't take your healthcare into your own hands then you're fucked... especially in SW Ontario. We have such a major shortage in doctors just finding a new one is almost impossible. Been trying to get a new GP for almost 10 years now with no luck. Like you I had to look outside the public system and pay for some proper healthcare.

Good job in taking such big steps to improve your health. This experience with your GP should be a great learning lesson about how important prevention is in our country. People die waiting for treatment and god forbid that ever happened to you. Stay the course bro. You're on the path now
