Introduction
Welcome to another episode of the Evolutionary.org podcast. In this podcast #610, Steve and Mobster discuss Mike Van Wyck and his life and career. They also go over his social media influence, diet, and training, and the guys speculate on his steroid cycle based on what we know he likes and has talked about.
Early life and career
Mike is a Canadian bodybuilder who was born in 1980, and the guys get into Mike's early life. He was a big fan of wrestling as a kid and always dreamed of being as big as some of his favorites such as Davey Boy Smith and the British Bulldog. Although he played several sports including baseball, football, and rugby, he fell in love with bodybuilding while in high school and started training in his school's weight room. A few of the bodybuilders he started to admire were Dorian Yates, Ronnie Coleman, and Flex Wheeler.
Steve says he went to college in Rhode Island after earning a scholarship and played defensive line on their football team. This was even more impressive considering he didn't even start playing organized football until his junior year of high school. While in college, he suffered numerous injuries and was happy to be done with the brutal sport of football and turned to bodybuilding only.
Mike competed in his first show in 2005, and won the Canadian National Championships in 2010. The next year won his pro card and competed as a pro for several years. His top titles were ’07 CBBF Mississauga Championships, superheavyweight, 1st, and overall; ’08 CBBF Ontario Championships, superheavyweight, 1st; ’09 CBBF Canadian Championships, superheavyweight, 1st, and overall.
His contest weight was 270 and his offseason weight was as high as 320.
Social media influence
Mike has a big following on the main social media platforms including Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. He likes to post training videos, and interviews, and also discuss his products. His website is called Wycked.com which sells different accessories and has a blog.
The guys talk about how Mike's social media grew even further when he had the pleasure of training with famous Canadian rapper Drake. He considers himself part of the family.
Mike is old school when it comes to his regard for social media and has called out the idiocy he has seen on platforms when it comes to workout videos.
His main issue is the ridiculous cinematography that guys will show and the way they over-dramatize it.
Steve says that Mike took to his Instagram and laid into these phony social media influencers. “There’s a specific couple of people who are like really f**king laying it on thick in the fitness industry right now with like their hyper motivational f**king hyper intense training footage”. Expressing his rebuke, he added, “But like one, you’re not elite athletes. You know what I mean, their livelihood doesn’t depend on how f**king well you work out or like what intensity you have. You’re just doing it for you”.
“Stop f**king acting like the most mundane exercise is the most f**king intense part of your day. It’s like we’re all here doing the same thing…but if I put music behind it and I do this cable row and I put some f**king cinematic sh*t on it, and they get like ‘Oh I’m following here to the machine. The grip, the light in the eyes, the sweat on the brow’”
Training
The guys say that Mike came from the background of football training, which was all about power and moving the weight. Mobster goes over a Mike quote from a podcast: “Over the past few years, I’ve had to become a master at body mechanics and how to make subtle shifts in your posture, grip width, foot stance, or what have you to hit the muscle more effectively or target a very specific part of a muscle that you may need to improve. I handle decent weights, but it’s never more than I can feel good contractions and stretches with.”
Mobster goes over some of his favorite workouts:
Training split: Monday: back; Tuesday: chest; Wednesday: off; Thursday: quads; Friday: shoulders; Saturday: arms; Sunday: hams, calves and abs
Top lifts: Bench press: 555 x 12; Flat-bench dumbbell press: 220 x 6; Barbell row: 495 x10; Lateral raise: 100 x 8; Squat: 675 x 8

Diet
Mike has talked about his diet and has written some diet examples that he has done. One of the cool things he did was go over his contest diet ahead of his pro competition in an interview. Steve goes over his diet in detail which was:
8 a.m.: 8 egg whites, 100 grams oatmeal, 1/4 cup blueberries; 2 scoops Whey
10:30 a.m.: 12 ounces chicken breast, 2 baked potatoes, 1 cup green beans
12:30 p.m.: 100 grams of oatmeal with 3 scoops of Whey
3 p.m.: 12 ounces ground bison, 1 cup green beans
6:30 p.m.: 12 ounces chicken breast, 1 cup green beans
8:15 p.m.: 50 grams of Whey protein
[8:30] to 10 p.m.: Train along with intra-workout supplements
10:15 p.m.: 50g Whey, 1 scoop waxy maize
11 p.m.: 12 ounces sirloin or eye of round steak
Steroid cycle
Mobster talks about several points Mike made about his steroid use:
*The first cycle was Test Suspension. Taken every 3rd day and gained 25lbs in a month
*They touched upon his using Dbol in a prep.
*Talked about how, with not knowing better, he just took more and more. All too often of more of the same thing (multiple DHT derivatives for example).
*Talks about NOT recommending Halo cos he hated how he felt about it
*References Charlie Francis's training and PED knowledge
*The biggy is Insulin. Used it a LOT by his admission and for a long time. Followed the Milos Sarcev protocol. Always around workouts and experimented with both longer and shorter versions of insulin. Very much into pre-, intra, and post-workout nutrition. Emphasized eating the RIGHT food to get the best results vs most users getting fat eating ANYTHING.
Here is a rough guess as to what he probably ran:
Insulin and HGH: 8-15IU's per day of each
Trenbolone Acetate: 800mgs per week
Deca Durabolin: 1000mgs per week
Testosterone E + Test Suspension: 1200mgs a week total
Dianabol: 80mgs per day
