To raise or to lower weights

Flip Digler

Advanced Cyborg Brother
Most people pyramid up in weight , meaning they start with a lower weight and increase every set . I do it different , I chose my target rep , let's say 10-12 reps for the day , then I pick they heaviest weight to make sure I fail at the target rep . Let's say I fail at 10 reps , I might use the same weight or I can lower it , as long as I am failing at the target . You see it dosent matter if I have a 10lb DB or a 50lb when you are failing every single set ! This way a set is never waisted .

The way I think is , the muscle does not know the weight , that's your EGO , it only know the stress you put it thru ! I have used this method for many many years and I feel it helps keep injuries away .

Sure it might look funny on your 6th set struggling to curl a 10lb DB , but who gives a fuck what others think , as long as you go to failure !

Give me your thoughts . Thx for reading .

I like alternating between heavier days and lighter days. I found that with lighter weight and higher reps, you get a lot more blood flowing to the muscle resulting in a better pump and hypertrophy. It's good to have the heavy days in there for strength improvement but those high rep days aren't as hard on your joints which may save you a lot of pain and discomfort in the future

Go big or go home! I switch up up like JB! I have my heavy days and my hypertrophy days! Let's say week 1 I hit chest heavy for 4-6 reps. Well week 2 on chest id do 75% of that weight and go for the 12-15 rep range.

I always like to "confuse" the muscle groups

I pyramid up to my working sets and then use drop sets on my last two. So i feel ya with the struggling w/10# dumbell, by the time i drop down to 10# my arms/shoulders are thrashed.

Could discuss training for hours, so many programs, so many ways to induce GROWTH. Outside of my heavy-light days. The 1 constant for me is, once I have completed my compound set of progressively overloading and all, for a particular bodypart,---- i do not revisit warmup sets, I jump right into my working sets.

But if u want a change of pace. Ceo turned me on to DC. It will LIGHT U UP!!!

I still do this with 4-6 or 8-6 reps , it's just you don't have to drop the weight as much .

I love the go big or go home , but I do that shit on my bike when I hit that 40ft gap and whip it sideways and tip my visor ! What kind of dumb ass would I be to get hurt in the gym and not be able to provide for my family ? Oh wait ! Scratch that :)

Hey Bro, that only works when your Young.
You will find as the years creep along, that starting heavy will take a Toll on your Joints..........................................JP
P.S.
So Enjoy it while you can !!!.
P.S.S.
On my Heavy days, I always need to warm up, I just don't Burn Out, at the Lower Weight.
I'll just keep the Reps around 4 and the Rest at 20 to 30 seconds, till I get to my Working Weight for that Day.

I hope I'm not a Harbinger of things to come.
I just know that in my 40's, I didn't worry about the Weight, even in my Mid 50's, but when I hit 59, that's when things got Interesting.
So I guess what I'm really saying is, take care of your Joints, and Hopefully they'll take care of you.................................JP
P.S.
I was Diagnosed with Osteo-Arthritis at 59.

Ah, I'm in Pain, where's the Nubain.
I haven't heard of that in years, is it still in use.
I used to like the Old Percodan's for Pain (#122), when they made a New Formula (#127), they weren't worth a Fuck anymore............................JP
P.S.
They've got some Super-duper Pain Killers out today, I'm glad I no longer need any (fingers crossed).
I don't even like to take an Anacin (aspirin + caffeine), these days.

Good post. I can't hit the ground running like I did when I was younger. These days I take the time to get warmed up so that my workout for day is maximized.
