Performance Program for a Triathlete

Stylidude

Hello,

I am a a 51 year old Ironman triathlete who really is struggling to get my performance where I feel I want to be. I was a former elite triathlete, I like to train hard and I do everything else super right - I just don't feel competitively I am getting what I am due (or want) since I came back to it?!

I am 72kg and train Swim/bike/run around 16 to 20hrs per week.

The attached blood are taken at my worst shape at the end of a 4 week complete break - a bit of poor eating and excess drinking in that - hey I needed a break after 3 Ironman's last year. Normally my diet is great. If I had a fault it is normally not getting enough sleep and not eating enough to get weight and body fat down!

Obviously my hereditary Cholesterol is high and my GP is about to put me on Statins for this which I am ok and will take - I guess even more so if I take any PEDS.

This last year I was taking around 40mg of Testosterone Undecanoate in capsule form 2 x a week.

I felt much better in all aspects of my life with this but I did it stupidly with no pre bloods etc and didn't cycle it. Luckily my levels still seem ok!

I have posted previously, but I am kind of new to this so it was a bit of a 'feeler'. I got alot of great help had some very kind suggestions for me to get on 125mg per week of Sustagen this year to take it to another level. I have done a lot of research since then and have as suggested gotten my blood done. My blood results for baseline Testosterone levels are attached and seem to show this to be is a good range.

I would love to increase these levels if you all think it would boost my performance but I have some reservations about starting something I can't stop. Thus I am not sure about going on a TRT type protocol at this point, maybe 'cycling' this 125mg through my training cycles. I don't need too much Testosterone for Ironman racing as and only need to be at my best for 2 races a year so 2 x 12 week 'boosts' would work perhaps with a PCT after?? Not sure if this is how it is meant to be done?!

I had considered EPO but don't need or want to take quite the risk but when I was researching this, I found quite a bit of work about SARMS and how to cycle them properly for Endurance sport performance. This is the first I had ever heard of SARMS.

I have noted a a few other endurance athletes/triathletes recommended a 12 week cycle protocol of various SARMS with a 3 week PCT but the ones I found dated back a few years and I am sure things have progressed.

I saw the below recommended by Dylan Gamelli;

1-12 GW-501516 (CARDARINE) 20 mg day dosed once a day in the a.m.
1-12 ACP-105 (VASCULINE) 20 mg day… split doses… 10 mg in the a.m. and 10 mg 4-6 hours later
1-12 Sr9009 (STENABOLIC) 30 mg day... 10 mg doses 4-5 hours apart
1-12 n2guard

Mini pct 13-16

Clomid 50/25/25/25 OR Nolva 40/20/20/20
Gw-501516 20 mg day

This sounds awesome and further research suggests a mix of GW, SR and RAD 140 could be good for endurance sports and really not sure where Osterine fits in?

Off of my bloods is anyone able to suggest a SARMS protocol (or just second the above) you could forward me please that would give me the performance benefits and go someway to replicating boosted testosterone or EPO or alternatively, could you please give me a cycled SARM protocol and suggest how I could 'top' this up with Testosterone and cycle that as well (or just tell me to stay away from T because I am an endurance athlete and my current T is ok?!? and Sarms alone are better and will do the job!)

As you can see I am confused as to where to go now!

welcome back to the EVO family :D @Stylidude I did see your other post before.
You definitely need a full log because your past use is strange for an endurance athlete and we can’t guide you properly until we see your training load diet sleep patterns and weekly markers laid out clean. Your capsule testosterone use was basically random micro TRT with no baseline labs and no cycling logic at all so before touching sarms or test boosts we have to map out what you respond to and what your endurance profile actually needs. 15min of your time get it started please and add bloods in log.

HOW-TO LOG?

Why is a Log Journal important?

  • Doing a log will actually help you way more than just dropping random updates. When you lay it all out week by week you start to see patterns in your body that you won’t catch otherwise.
  • Other guys here run logs all the time and there’s no privacy issue, nobody is asking for your name or anything personal, it is just training, diet, and how the compound feels.
  • The feedback you get is also way better because people can follow along and spot things you might miss. It also helps the next guy who is thinking about running the same compound so you are giving back while you learn.
  • Even if you think you might not stick with it, just starting the log makes it easier to come back and add quick notes. That way you get more out of what you are running instead of keeping it all in your head.

To really guide you we need more info from you:
  • Please share your diet, training, cardio, sleep, supplements etc log with us in a NEW thread, full log journal so our guidance is based on facts you provide.
  • It will take 15-20 minutes max.
  • We have 100s of years of experience between us, so you need to post a LOG Journal with your stats (weight, height, age, years training, cycle history) diet, training, cardio, supplement, sleep details. If you don't log what you eat or train now, open NOTES on phone and start recording it there and paste here. Very easy.
  • Please post a Log Journal asap for us

forget EPO man and forget blood doping. those are very outdated

GW and SR are a must! you will notice amazing endurance improvements quite quickly

Bros. We don't got many guys on here who endurance athletes. You should definitely Log this. I want to check this one out.

My recommendation is also to put up a log. This way we can track your progress and you can help others learn.

is SR bioavailable orally? I thought it wasn't?

I spent the last 5 years racing xc mtb, had numerous coaches, and know the endurance landscape.

My first thoughts/questions are:
1) are you competing in tested events? Lots of masters have been popped by UCI, and unsure what testing happens in tri? That makes a big difference i protocol.
2) what did you weigh when you were your fastest

@stevesmi was.

I suspect this members stats are similar to many who do triathlons. It's crazy hard on the body.

Welcome @Stylidude
I used to race Ironman/Ultramarathon and MTB a few years back prior to getting more serious about bodybuilding. I always had great luck with just a simple stack of cardarine and ostarine. Both are great for endurance and help combat muscle fatigue during long training sessions.
Your bloodwork levels are pretty much where I would except them for a 51yo. Training 16-20 hours/week is going to drive your natural test down a bit. As you are getting older the long duration training is also gonna make recovery tougher and overtraining syndrome/chronic fatigue becomes much more of a possibility.
What are your plans going forward? That is what will help us determine the best solution for your goals.

I saw the below recommended by Dylan Gamelli;

Start up a log and let's see what is a day in the life of you for a few weeks. We will be able to go from there.

For now, don't consider EPO and don't take Test capsules again. Once we follow your log for a bit of stretch we'll get you nice and doped up for endurance and recovery.

Congrats on being 51 and still getting after it at this level of competition!

is SR bioavailable orally? I thought it wasn't?

I spent the last 5 years racing xc mtb, had numerous coaches, and know the endurance landscape.

My first thoughts/questions are:
1) are you competing in tested events? Lots of masters have been popped by UCI, and unsure what testing happens in tri? That makes a big difference i protocol.
2) what did you weigh when you were your fastest
Hello, thank you for your reply!!

No, not really in tested events. Most events not tested, only once a year at World Champs so need to know I can be 'clean' if tested there though, so need to know how long everything could 'glow' of be in my system but will have at least 4 months notice of a test?!

When I was at my fastest ion the last 10 years was 67kg. At the moment, I seem to be able to get to 72 but not lower but feel I am carrying some more fat I could lose to get lower but I seem to struggle to shift this naturally now for whatever reason?!

Hey, again, thank you for replying!!

All of this really! I want to do Ironman as long as I can now but as you say recovery is getting tougher and these levels in the bloods are on the off season. As you say when I am fully training I think I can feel my T is lower but that is obvious and stands to reason!!

My plans are to do 1 to 3 Ironman's each year, try to podium in the age group but I really just want to be a little more competitive in the overall?!

I love this sport and want to be back a little closer to the 'pointy end' and be up there with the younger fellas a little!

Equally I want longevity in the sport but will only get that if I am enjoying it and enjoying it to me is not scraping around at the back of the field to finish.

As well I need to be able to do and recover from the training enough to be a good dad and family guy as well. The sport needs to fit into my life balance and not tire me to the point I am tired and grumpy all the time when I get home!

I think at 50 this is not unreasonable as you already have the base. Personally I would target 1 IM(maybe 2) per year and aim to do a couple HIM as tune up races so you can race a little faster and not stress your body as much. You will obviously be training/racing with a little more output so that will translate to longer races.
What are your average times? Power on the bike? Races you've done?
I'll be following your log.

@Stylidude I'll be following along your log because Im super interested in this.

If you're doing worlds, dont touch deca or injectable winny. I've heard of people getting popped for both years after discontinuation. it doesn't make sense, but i wouldn't risk it

Carradine is temporary gains. My cycling Vo2 estimate from garmin went up 5 points over about 6 weeks of use, but upon discontinuation it dropped 3. So im going to say it didn't actually increase my Vo2/stroke volume - just made me more chemically efficient. I definitely recovered better especially on threshold and Vo2 days, and could handle more volume (riding about 12hrs/wk at that time).

Id use cardarine in base period and non tested events. For me it worked best dosed evenly through the day at 7.5mg am/pm and 1hr pre workout.

TRT and AAS id keep low dose. And stick to low dose/trt test base + primo, eq, var or tbol. Goal being to recomp but still shoot for closer to your better race weight, and better recovery for quality of life. Big days can sometimes mean I'd be useless on a day or two on the weekend, and it sounds like that may be a concern.

Low dose Reta in the base phase will help alot. I feel like I can literally see the effects of every zone 2 ride melting fat off. Im on 0.75mg/ week and not going higher. If you chose to use this don't look at your heart rate because its useless and misleading, i jumped on the bike this morning at almost 80bpm, zone 2 power is 10-15bpm higher than normal, but did a 5min VO2 effort and Hr tracks more like I'd expect.

TB-500 is on my radar for endurance because it promotes angiogenesis. That should be a great endurance adaptation gettin more oxygen to everywhere. I have no use, so thats just my thoughts from reading about it.

Thank you so much for this Flash, this is exactly the sort of advice I was looking ofr, especially since you obviously ride as well - great insights on the HR etc. I am going to digest this one and reply to you properly as I would love to pick your brains about this in more detail!!!

Thanks so much!!!

I am all for learning the new ways!! I was thinking GW, SR and maybe Osterine? Can you combine all 3 do you think?
yes that is good. the only thing i would say is be careful taking them before cardio cause you could throw them up. some of the fillers could upset the stomach so might have to take with some food

forget EPO man and forget blood doping. those are very outdated

GW and SR are a must! you will notice amazing endurance improvements quite quickly
Agreed 100%

Thank you so much. Looking for any advice I can on how to take, when to take and how to cycle these - the guys are helping me out a fair bit in the log but this is all of the sort of info I really need!! Thank you

I would say take sr right before cardio short half life. Gw you can take about 3-4 hours prior or daily consistent

Thanks Steve!! Am working on the log to finalise a cycle/plan. Might get back to you with some specifics and you obviously have great knowledge and experience on this!! Thanks again!!
yeah you will love them trust me

Yes I am sure.

Very interesting what Flash was saying earlier in the thread about GW being worth about 5 Vo2 max points on his Garmin - that is massive!!!

What is the best form to take SR in - I have heard differing report??
most important thing is QUALITY of the product

Thank you Steve - I assume getting something from the approved list here in Oz will see me right with a good quality SR?
yep talk to your aussie bros on here. check their logs who is using it

I'm a little late to this conversation. I'm not an elite triathlete but I did do an ironman in 2022 and half ironman last month (and several smaller races in between). I don't take anything when I'm doing an ironman camp but, if I did, it would probably just be HRT/TRT level testosterone and that's it. I had that Cardarine or GW stuff and the risk associated with it weren't worth the reward for me. I just threw it away (actually gave it to a friend of mine who is not even an endurance athlete, I think he was just going to sell it.)
