Introducing what I've called the 'Muscle Mob Library' (named after the magazine I published) or 'The Collection'. It even has a group page over on Facebook.

I started collecting bodybuilding books and magazines around the same time I started lifting - so circa `1980. I 'lost' (left behind) some 400 in a move from Gloucester to here in South Wales. But apart from that it's mostly complete and then been added to over the years. I now have a HUGE space (the overall space here is around 4800sq ft for rate-able purposes (meaning it['s more lol) and the middle floor is 1000sq ft. I've set aside an area rough 32 x 12 so 640sq ft as the library space. I've used metal storage type shelves for strength (wood would be nicer but a LOT more work and cost).

At a guess, since it's been a while since I actually counted, I'd say I've 8000 or so bodybuilding magazines and well over 100+ books. The oldest item is from 1900 and there are still a handful of magazines etc being printed and published so I have a couple of subscriptions. I'll add more info as I go along. I almost certainly add to the collection most months. Early this December I scored thirty one 1949 to 1962 issues of British magazine (arguably one of if not THE oldest magazine (claims 1896). I often get lucky with being the only bidder in auctions so grab a LOT of bargains that way.

The collection isn't 100% pure bodybuilding. There's powerlifting, training, nutrition and even other sports biographies. I'm also lucky, by virtue of being known as a collector, that people just give me additions to it.

Pic is an old one (2021) from when I first set it up. That's an old (donated to me) Hifi stack system in the middle.

The Sandow (as in Eugene Sandow) part of the collection. The bound red book is 1900-1901 set of Sandow magazines. Plus assorted Sandow grippers and other books etc
Very oldschool 💪
I’ve only seen them discussed, never saw one in real life.

Apologies for low res images (mostly screen-grabs). This is one of ALL seven (I have them all) published magazines of Muscle Express (UK magazine). I even trained at one of the owners gym. Ben Ryan (Ryan's gym) was seen in a well-known UK singers pop video.

They occasionally come up on eBay. I want, but don't want to pay the prices I've seen for them, one which comes with a bell that rings when you close it.

Holy shit this is fucking awesome !!!
People that visit who are into lifting etc tend to go WTAF! :D

At some point I'd like it to be used in degree studies etc. Failing that my daughter can sell it. It's worth, at average prices, between £40,000 and £50,000 sold individually

Recently added (last week) shelving. You can also see a donated set of recliners chairs and a globe bar (again given to me). In front is a former water tank used a table with a steampunk style lamp and glass chest set. To the side is a hospital style bedside table to rest books etc on. When sitting in a chair you can't hear outside noises so it's a great spot to chill

A few years back I purchased some (nigh on a 100) magazines from the widow of the late Dave Gentle. He'd started the magazine (ran it for the 1st 12 months and I did the following 6 years) so those spiral bound Muscle Mobs are unique. The Dave Draper cover was when he and his wife allowed us to use some of his articles. I've almost a complete collection of the Bodypower magazine.

I've seen 300-400 bucks and that's more than I wanna pay

Not everything is a magazine. This is a Health & Strength League lapel point. At one point it had 250,000 members worldwide.View attachment 156357

Ball point pen image of Arnold Schwarzenneger by Richard Bradbeer of brads sketch pad added to the collection today. Seen over the weekend inc his practice video, contacted and purchased today (August 18th)

You are definitely the definition of old school for sure. I used to have a collection myself. I'm not sure what happened to it. I think my daughter stole it all.

Bros, this a hell of a library you put together. You sure that's in your house? That looks like you took a picture going somewhere like to a bookstore.

I own and live in what was what Americans would call a former Veterans club. Not a traditional house for sure.

Not even close. That said most collectors of similar tend to end up focusing on one thing - like Arnold S covers.

The Stark Collection at the University of Texas is probably the all time varied and by sheer numbers biggest. Heck, it even had it's OWN newsletter (I've a couple) called Iron Game History.

The late Leroy Colbert. Weider claimed he had a genuine 20 inch arm. Mr Universe was a Weider UK print of the US Mr America magazine
wow, those are certainly huge arms, my goodness. And back then, they didn't have the types of ways to make these photos as fake as they do today.

You should charge admission for people to come and check out these magazines and read through them, sort of like a bookstore. Or a museum.

Have you read every single one cover to cover? That in itself is impressive

Was this the infamous photo shoot that came out just before the Olympia and scared the shit outta everyone cuz no one knew what Yates was up to in his dungeon?

So much history there man

Yates might be my personal choice for GOAT. Coleman in 1998 too was a sight to be seen! I'm a mass monster fan which was why I was pissed that Nick blew it this year.

Yep. I've that magazine too
Cool!

That story was such a great one. Dorian was like some old school warrior who just disappeared from the world and would emerge only to compete and dominate. That photographer really let the cat outta the bag that year lol.

Peter McGough was the stirrer. Handing out the pics for athletes to see at the Weider office.

This is iconic
As am image for sure and I'm amazed it's ballpoint prn. He practices, when not working on commissions, on bodybuilding pics. Recently he's started selling at comic cons. I shared a Hulk image of his on my Facebook. I also purchased, a few years back, a piece he'd done to raise money for a local cancer charity. Paid what he'd wanted to raise when it didn't sell.

Of course you know the name of the actual photographer. True iron historian!
Kevin Horton was the photographer. He also did Dorian's Blood & Guts video. Peter was a writer but also a big fan of Doz

Oh no way. I didn't realize it was the same guy that filmed blood and guts but now that you mention it I can see the similarities.

14lbs in 14 days???? Can we read that article!!! LOL!!!
Seriously @Mobster I'd love to see that article and read the old school "advices" on how to gain 14lbs in 14 days. Probably zinc, LOL.

Bit more shelving to go and I'll decide if I wanna partition it off then
Great looking setup @Mobster

That globe thing sitting between the two chairs. I remember there were these old school globes like that but they claim shell open and people stored liquor in there. Is that what it is?

Yes. So-called 'Globe Bar'. Again a donation. I think I purchased some 1-inch hole weights or something from him (Dai Lew - he'd lost half his bodyweight (close to 150lbs dropped) and I'd held him up as an example to others) and he just gave it to me. There IS some booze inside but it's more of a what I'd want in a library lol. That and a cigar humidor (and I don't smoke).

What a lovely space, youve done well @Mobster
Silly thing I'm thinking of adding is a fake animal skin like a lion or bear.

IF I do go with the partitioning idea I'll go with the proper stained wood vibe too. It's that or just put backing panels onto the racks. Truth is proper wood shelves would look a LOT nicer but would be $10k easy

Yeah, we are currently building a house and its crazy how much quality fittings can add up very very quickly

The red shelves are cheap as f**k. Not even $50US. Freestanding strong (so not Ikea then) would be at least $200. Actually built in would be double that (if I got a bunch done) and that's without paneling.

Of course if my lotto numbers come up... ;)

You've got a big house for sure, mobster. Now I see why you like living there so much. That's a lot of space to keep books like that. You must pay a fortune for maid service for that big of a place. @Mobster

maybe you can put in some animal heads on the ceiling or something. @Mobster that place though definitely looks haunted as hell. No wonder the cats are scared to go in that room.

The cats aren't scared. This is less a room than an open floor. What's left of the stage behind, former bar to the right, two toilets either side of the stage etc. Biggest single space in the building

That might work. Carved bulls head can be purchased on eBay

I thought you guys were known for your maids in those black and white skirts that really clean the house good with those fancy accents.

I'm from blue collar stock. As likely, back in the day, to have been a servant than employ one. If I win the lotto I MIGHT get me some cleaning staff ha ha

bros what covent garden mean? @Mobster that like an indoor garden ?
The thing itself is just a furnishing piece (the GF got it for me I think) but there is, what was once a large central London commercial fruit and vegetable market. It's now more of a gathering spot (the actual market has moved). People go there for a drink before hitting clubs or gigs etc. One vibe is there's a world class opera house nearby and some singers will come practice outside the bars. I worked a few minutes away for some years

Bros, you got a backyard with grass and stuff or you just all concrete?

So you live in pretty much a mansion. I take it it's like a family inheritance type of thing.
No. I've said earlier it's what you'd call a former Veterans Club

Paid for by me. I took a HUGE gamble (no loan or mortgage etc too) as it was still listed as a commercial building and I had to apply for a change of use. It had been empty 5 years (the club went bankrupt). It was super cheap (less than $50,000)

Back in 2011, before buying, my head was up my ass (mentioned on podcasts on mental health). I'd essentially fucked my old place off and walked away (huge stresses). I went back, sorted it and sold it. I didn't give two fucks where I lived. Slowly got my head back and looked at a ton of places I had the money for all over the country. At some point I'm like why am I just looking at houses. I wanted a kick ass home gym and space for other shit, like the library, so started looking at commercial spacers with living spaces attached etc. One I eyeballed was a fish and chip shop and 3 bed apartment above.

Looked at one in person which had a kind of funky stone built barn attached on an island of off Wales. Right at the top of my budget. But local transport was bad. Anyway I also looked at a 5 more here, 4 houses and this place.

Two other buyers wanted to turn it into apartments but I know they'd get turned down (needs 6 spaces outside and only has 3). Similar properties nearby had also had permission refused. 6 weeks later the seller calls and says 'you still want it?'. I moved in before paying. Forgot the legal docs at the bank and used my debit card to make the payment lol

I also got lucky with the planning officer. They are asses. And esp so when they can be an ass via email or the phone. That officer came with his younger female boss and she was as cool as f**k. And because I was already treating it as my home it made it that much easier to say yes. I also spoke to someone who'd worked in the council. That and used the same architect who'd helped the club submit a previous application etc etc. A little bit of 'who you know' helped

Cool story but we all know you live in a castle on top of a hill with a draw bridge and a moat.

The alligators in the moat keep cutting off your Internet connection during the podcasts
